Just wondering if there are any relatives of a Pelagia Kurysz or Michal Kurysz that traveled to the US from Grockowce, Austria between 1906 and 1913. My great-grandfather is Dmytro Kurysz from Ukraine and I am looking for some of his relatives. My great-grandfather later went by James Kuyrsh and his wife's name was Marya.

I am also wondering if there are any Ukrainians living in the Chicago area (or that have connections to Chicago) that can help me with research on my Ukrainian roots in the city.

Thank you.

Mulyk

Hello,

I am just starting to search for the ancestors and relatives of Peter (Roy?) Mulyk. I would also like to know how to spell MULYK in the Ukrainian (Cyrillic) alphabet. Also, does Mulyk mean anything in Ukrainian?

This is what I know about Peter Mulyk:

- born in the Ukraine in about 1924 (year could be wrong).
- fought for the Germans during World War 2
- deserted the German Army and escaped from the Ukraine to England
- In England, he married Peggy Perfect, from Derby, England
- They moved to Ottawa and then later Victoria, BC
- In Ottawa Peter did work for the Ukrainian Embassy (or equivalent at the time) at some point.

This is all I know. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should best go about my research? Does anyone know of any Ukrainian websites where I could search for email addresses or phone numbers of potential Mulyk cousins (and other relatives) still in the Ukraine? Does anyone know how common of a last name Mulyk is in the Ukraine? I found some Mulyk's from Borynychi, Lviv, Ukraine listed on familysearch.org

Thank You,

Sal

John/Janos Metro/Demeter

I am seeking information of my grandfather's family in his old country, Transylvania/Romania/Austria-Hungary. We do know that there was a change of his surname after his arrival in the US.

According to the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses, he came to the US from Austria/Hungary around 1911. When he came over, supposedly he traveled with at least one brother. The Ellis Island passenger manifest of a Janos Demeter who traveled to the US with a brother Ivan and arrived in June, 1906, from Terebes, has been suggested as a possibility. (Thank you MightHelp!) An excellent one, I think. According to the manifest, these brothers were to hook up with another brother, George, of Watertown, NY, upon arrival. My father remembers his father saying he was from 'Sparta'????

Grandpa was said to have had at least two brothers, but no one is really sure of their names. The names in the Ellis Island manifest fit with the naming of John's children but the arrival date differs from the Censuses by five years. I would like to believe that the name on the manifest was my grandfather. Could the dates differ by this much? Was it common that as time passed, dates weren't remembered as accurately and were changed?

One family story is that Grandpa's brothers moved to Canada, possibly to work as tailors. My grandfather stayed (or was possibly denied entry to Canada for lack of a 'trade'(?)) in the States, finding work as a coal miner for a time. The stories all lack much detail.
Then, sometime between 1920 and 1930, the family moved to Michigan.

Any information about this family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for Ancestors

I am trying to track down my family tree, but not getting very far. I will hopefully make a trip to Ottawa soon and see if the archives turn up anything. The problem is, from my understanding, is that shortly after my ancestors arrival in Canada (1902-1905 or so) a grade school teacher or similar, could not pronounce my familie's name and changed to KOWCH. This story, or similar story has been verified by others. My great grandfather (Wasyl Kowch) and grandmother (Frasyna Matiece) both came from Paniowce Borschiw Ukraine they then settled in Saskatchewan. From what I remember Wasyl (William) passed away in 1976 in Swan Plains and Frasyna passed away in 1933. They had a few children Peter, Metro, John, Orest others which I do not know.

My Grandfather's name was Peter Kowch who passed away January 1979 I believe, who was married to Minnie (Polowich) Kowch who is still alive in Sudbury. They had four children Percy (deceased), Sylvia (Zinn), Peter (deceased) and Gloria.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to UGS Advisory Board member, Michelle Chubenko for the following information:
Ukrainian Archives Now Has English-language Web Site
====================================================
At the encouragement of Miriam Weiner, the State Archives of Ukraine has
posted the English version of major portions of their website that includes
contact information for archives throughout Ukraine, a very useful "Q&A"
section and a special section for "Genealogy." The Home Page is at
http://www.scarch.kiev.ua/. Subsections include:
About Us
News / Announcements
Contacts
List of Archives
Genealogy
Programs & Projects
On-line Resources
Archival Guides
Ukrainica Abroad
Q&A
Useful Links

The Contacts list includes the e-mail addresses of members of the State
Committee on Archives of Ukraine, Ukrainian Research Institute for Archival
and Records Studies, and Society of Ukrainian Archivists.

The List of Archives is a complete list of all archives in Ukraine. Many of
those located in the larger cities, such as Kyiv, have e-mail addresses.
Even some of the oblast archives now have e-mail.

An excellent Question & Answer section covers such questions as:
* What is your policy regarding access to archival material by foreigners?
* What is the relationship between the State Committee on Archives of
Ukraine and the oblast archives?
* Is there a specific time period after which records are transferred from
a ZAHS (ZAG) office to the state archive?
* Are there any restrictions or requirements for genealogists who want to
research records in Ukrainian archives to discover their ancestral past?
* What procedures should be followed by someone who wants to obtain
information from Ukrainian archives by correspondence?
* What is the fee structure for research conducted by archives?
* What is the present situation regarding methods of payment?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--
Michelle Tucker Chubenko
I don't know if either of the two people listed are related to my husband's family. It is certainly possible.
In the late 1980s, Alexander Chepurny Sr.'s brother, Mykola and their niece, Maria visited us here in Ontario, Canada. We have unfortunately since lost touch with the family since Alexander died of lung cancer in 1991.
We have a journal written by Alexander Sr. before he died and are attempting to have it translated so his children and grandchildren may have his family history. He tells many compelling stories about his family and his village of Stetiewka.
We would appreciate any help in tracing Alexander's roots in Ukraine.
I just wanted to inform everyone that the Ukrainian Genealogical Society has procured their own domain (ukrgs.org) and is in the process of moving the majority of their content off of Rootsweb and onto the main web site at http://www.ukrgs.org. We hope to have this completed within the next month or so. Currently, we are working on the main content page at http://www.ukrgs.org/wiki/index.php. Volunteers would be appreciated to help with the building of this site.
I am just beginning to research the family background of my grandfather, Leon MAJOROWSKI (or MOJOROWSKI). He was born in Odessa, Ukraine in ca 1890, became a doctor and travelled to Palestine in 1917 or 1918, where he stayed. I believe his father was a newspaper publisher. I also know that he had a sister called Nadezhda/Nadia.
I would like any information on this family name and also contacts with a reliable researcher within the Ukraine who could do some research for me before a projected visit to Odessa sometime during the next year.
Dmetriuc and Ohotnicqy Surnames
I am grasping at straws...unable to find any info on my paternal grandparents who came to the US separately as young adults in the early 1900's. My cousins and I have been trying to research both families with extremely little luck. From a passport prepared by the Romanian consolate, we believe my grandfather's name may have been Ion Dmetriuc. His name was changed to John Metro after his arrival in the US. He traveled to the US from the Forbes (?) area of Transylvania with two brothers who did not enter the US but went on to Canada. My grandmother, Wiktoria (Victoria) Ohotnicqy, came to the US from the Bukovina area of Romania as a teen, indentured as a nanny/housekeeper/cook in NYC. I have tried to search on these names without any luck. Are there any possible variances I should try? Thank you for any help provided.
 The UGS is pleased to announce the creation of 2 new mail lists; 1 was just
completed a few days ago and the other the UGS has adopted for moderation:
1) UKRAINE; new mail list pertaining to Ukrainian surnames. Need
information on a surname, have any information on one, or just to exhange
information about Ukrainian surnames, go to
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/u/ukraine.html
to get instructions on how to subscribe.
2) UKR-DONETSK-OBLAST; adopted mail list for the exchange of genealogical
information pertaining to Donesk Oblast. To subscribe, send a message to
UKR-DONETSK-OBLAST-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word
subscribe
and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command
instead to UKR-DONETSK-OBLAST-D-request@rootsweb.com.
Terry
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukrgs/
ADMIN: New feature linking message boards and lists
Some of the people on the UKRGENSOCIETY mail list are seeing a new type of message showing up in their inbox. This message references a Message Board URL. What this denotes is that a message has been posted on the UGS message board and has been automatically forwarded to the mail list. This is called the gateway feature. If anyone on the mail list wants to respond to this type of message all they have to do is click on the link. Please read the following for a better understanding of this invaluable resource:
Q. What is the gateway which links message boards and mailing lists?
A. This exciting feature was designed to integrate a message board with the mailing list for the same subject (surname, locality, etc.). Many mailing list administrators opt to have a mailing list receive "gatewayed" messages--messages which are originally posted on a corresponding message board. When the list and board administrators agree to use the gateway all messages posted to the corresponding board are instantly copied in full to the allied list.
When you see gatewayed messages on a mailing list to which you subscribe, and you wish to reply to the message, you should be aware that the poster of the message is most likely not subscribed to the list. Replies should be made on the board by going to the URL (address) in the gatewayed message. Your reply on the board will then be "gatewayed" back to the list as well.
If you can click on the URL to access the message you should do so, and others (mainly AOL users) who cannot should copy and paste the URL into the browser window. By replying on the board you ensure that the poster will see the reply to the message he posted and also that the thread of the message is preserved on the board for the benefit of future researchers who may find the messages in a search.
For additional information, see http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=Help&r=rw&p=to...
UGS Member Services
UPDATE: RSL Surname Index List
One great tool at Rootsweb is the surname list search. However, it is
limited to just surnames and locations. The UGS has implemented an index
extract list based on the notices published by Rootsweb for new surnames
that they've added during each month. April's has just been completed. If
you find a surname, location, or any other data in the index lists, then you
can go to the RSL search and get the researcher details.
To view the newest resource on UGS go to http://www.rootsweb
com/~ukrgs/surname/
This page can also be access from the Resource Page.
UGS Member Services
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukrgs/
