My name is James Kuresh and if you're not my cousin Linda Kuresh Windfield, then I can tell you some things with a certain degree of certainty. Other things I'm not completely certain of so bear with me.My paternal grandfather was named Jacob Kuresh (although there is another spelling ending in cz??). He came to Halifax by ship from Horodenka in 1901 I'm sure I have records to support this but after several moves may have a bit of difficulty locating them. He was married to Pearl Stasiuk(??)1n the early 1900's here in Canada.I'm sure I have records to support this but would have to locate them. They lived in Winnipeg where Jacob worked for the Winnipeg Electric Railroad, and had six children, four of whom took education in English during the day and Ukrainian during the evening. They were Bill,Helen,Ann and John (Ivan my father). this means they were all completely bi-lingual English and Ukrainian, betraying no accent in either language.Pity none of them taught their children! This was the Winnipeg family. Now I believe that the twins Jack and Dorothy were born in Prudhomme Saskatchewan where they had the twins Harry(Jack)and Dorothy who isthe sole survivor of that family and is in her late 70's or early 80's. We do not keep in touch. Pearl moved on with her children to Rosedale Alberta near Drumheller and ran a small coffee shop. She apparently remarried a man called "The Chief" Bodnuruk(??) She is buried near my sister Carol(who died at three in Rosedale)in the Newcastle (Drumheller graveyard and her tombstone reads Pearl Kuresh Bodneriuk.I have a picture of the gravesites. Hope this is a help to you. My e-mail address is accurate so contact me any time. All the best James W. Kuresh Victoria BC Cananda

Hello Alan,

I was pleased to see your post, and I look forward to sharing information. Would you mind e-mailing me directly at tabelski@gmail.com?

On another message board, I just made contact with another person who is part of the same family tree... I believe her ancestor was a sibling to Gabriel and, according to her, their father's name was Vasil.

It appears that at some point, probably in Canada, Tabenski was changed to Tabelski. Why remains a mystery.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I will hopefully be able to share more information in the near future. Adam

Re: Pidpylypia, Podfilipie, family records

Have recently done some research of Podfilipie and West Ukraine for my friend. Her grandfather Stephan Tabenski, lived in Podfilipie and left for Nova Scotia at about the same time (1911-1916) as Gabriel Tabelski. The village is split in two by the Zbruch river which in effect was the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Imperial Russia until the end WW1 in 1918. Stephan Tabenski lived in the larger part of the village situated in the Khemlnytska Oblast (region)of Imperial Russia, (other side of village in the Ternopil Oblast of Austro-Hungarian Empire). This village is very small even today (pop. approx.400) and so it is likely that Stephen and Gabriel knew each other, or at least their families did. Stephen's mother (born Fewrona Stasuk)stayed in the village (father Ivan was deceased). Stephan was Greek Catholic as were many in this area (Galicia, Podolia, western Ukraine) and the history of this region is quite interesting. My friend and her husband spent a week (last week of this past September) in the Ukraine landing in Kiev, by train to their hotel in Kamyanets-Podilskij (largest city in the area) and by bus 40km to the village now known as Pidpylypia. She has many photos of village and spoke to some of the villagers with the help of a young boy who spoke some english. I have a lot of info about this area and it's history (Gabriel was most likely of Polish ethnicity) and would be glad to share what I've found if you contact me. I originally considered that the "L" in Tabelski may have been a misprint of "N" in Tabenski, as the Tabelski name is not popular, but I did find other Tabelski's in Poland, and possibly Germany (can't remember at this moment but I'll research it again). I'm curious if you've found any other info about Gabriel or the Tabelski family name. Please let me know if you have.
Alan
Looking for information on the surname Parmut-Пармут

Привіт всім!

I am looking for information on the origins of the Surname Parmut or for that matter the rare Ukrainian surnames that end in the ut/mut suffix, Bahmut,Marmut,Paramut,Yarmut,Dolgut,Khonut etc. My family Parmut is originally from Pryluky. They are of Jewish Religion but the surname itself is very rare and it's origins are hard to trace. It is so rare that I was able to find my living relatives who still live in Russia. If anyone could shed any light into the ut/mut surnames as well as possibly my own It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Grisha

A ton of my family members(on my Mom’s side of the family) are buried in Mount Hebron in the Horodosher Bros Society. I was wondering if there are any relatives of people buried there? I want to see if anymore family members are recognizable. Unfortunately it’s really hard to connect family members, because the elders are mostly all dead and a lot of people changed their last names.

My family names buried in the Horodosher Bros. Society:

Slotnick, Markowitz, Grodinsky, Smith, Epstein, Rubatzky, Michael, Feldman, Sawits

Thank you,
Erica
iaminadaze@yahoo.com

My great-grandfather, Gabriel Tabelski, was born on March 18, 1894 in Pidpylpia or Podfilipie. As a young man, he left what is now the Ukraine, arriving at the port of Halifax, Canada, in March 1911. He spent more than five years in Canada before crossing the border into the USA in December 1916. He lived the rest of his life with his family in Buffalo, New York, dying in 1977.

Does anyone know if there may be any records about the Tabelski family in Pidpylpia? On later documents, Gabriel identified his father as “Vasil,” “Vasilly,” or once as “John.” He was Roman Catholic.

Thank you!
I am looking for any information about relatives, descendants and ancestors of my great grandfather, Павел Иванович Шутенко, Pavel Ivanovich Shutenko. HE had all his property confiscated 1929 and died 1946. I am not sure of his birth date or birth place but he is, as I am lead to believe, a Zaporozhian Cossack, he had at least two sons, Павел Иванович, Pavel Ivanovich and Михоил Павлович, Mikhail Pavlovich. The family moved from the Ukraine to the Kuban territory, Timashevsk, in 1960. My mother was born in 1923, село Погорильци, Чигиринский район, Кировоградская область.

Hi Birta!
Thanks for the response.
Daniel/Danylo's place of birth on his passenger manifest to Canada is "Nowosiolka" which as I understand is a popular name for a town in Ukraine. The other hint I have is family recollection of Ternopil being his birthplace, but there was more than one Nowosiolka near the city of Ternopil in Ternopil Oblast.

A search of the Manitoba vital statistics turned up a marriage of Danylo Koschlak to Anna Bruchanska in 1914(this date fits)in the county of Brokenhead, which is where my ancestors Dan and Anny are from. I have no yet heard of a "Bruchanska" and was told her name was "Benzik" or "Bendzak"... At the very least, this will explain why i haven't found any other record of her!

In order to track down the correct village for your ancestors it is important to find all the information you can in Canada.

Find your ancestors death, birth and marriage information, many times you will find the village of a great grandparent on a relatives marriage resigtration. Koszlak (born 22 Nov 1890) and Anny Benzik (born 1891?).
Daniel immigrated to Canada aboard the SS Cassandra in 1910 and settled in Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada. He and Anny and 2 of their sons appear on the 1916 Canadian census of the prairies as Greek Catholic Ruthenians.
Daniel might have had siblings: Harry or Hawrylo Koszlak (lots of records on ancestry.com) who's wife was Katarzyna, then Hrynko, Jakob, George, and a sister Mary. I think many of these people lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Hi Alissa,
Thanks for your reply. I already have the shipping manifest thanks. You must be related to Julie (cottontail) then. She has a lot of information about Hnat as he was her great grandfather(?) also. We have finally found the Ukranian side of the family -read other messages. I have been trying to find them for years as we had no info from my grandfathers side - Jakiw - he died when my dad was only 2 and already had lost contact with his cousin Hnat -they had a big fight over money and never spoke again. Julie will be able to help you more than me, I think. Where do you live? - I live in Australia but was born and raised in Canada.Look forward to hearing from you. regards, your cousin, Mary-Rose
Hi my name is Alissa Kurys Johnson great granddaughter of Hnat Kursyz. I came across your name on a google search for my great grandfather. my family has just started researching the family.

Hnat had 3 children Helen, Dorothy And Peter. Peter was my grandfather. He passed 8 years ago. Hnat died in 1971 he is buried in Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn NY. In our search we saw that Hnat and your grandfather sailed together on the same ship from Germany. We have just started getting documents on Hnat we have copies of the ships manifest which shows both hnat and Jakiw's names on it. I can send them to you if you would like.

wow at last the story fits. My grandfather was Jakiw !!!He died in 1934 when my father was just 2 ( my faher is still alive and well ) following an accindent in the forest, from which he developed blood poisining because he didnt get help on time - too isolated. Nothing much is known about Jakew's life before Canada and because he died so young my faher never gor any family history. I do know that Jakew and Hnat had a big fight and never spoke again. Therre was also a very valuable violin which was stolen and has never been found.Jakew's wife was Maria Ziombra of Morden, Manitoba, also of Polish/Ukrainain/Austrian - I have her full history as her whole family came out together.
Does the story about Jakew's gandfather being a well known civil engineer, building mainly bridges mean anything to "our" history. I am so excited. I live in Austalia by the way.Your english is excellent.Cant wait to hear more.
Any information you can give me will be great for my dad as he knows nothing of his father. Dad is a retired school teacher and a musician. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi,
Thank you for posting the information you have. I was excited to read it. Hnat is my great grandfather. He and Jakiw immigrated to Canada April 1911. Hnat actually left and went to the United States in 1913. He entered the US on foot on April 13, 1913. By 1918 he made it to New York City, New York and married. I have been able to obtain his Naturalization Records.

Do you have a copy of the picture of Jakiw and Hnat? I would love to see it. I have pictures and documents of Hnat I can send to you. Do you know Hnat's parents names?
Help with finding family in Ukraine.

I am currently researching my family tree. My Grandfather was from Ukraine (believed to be born in Kiev although we have no birth certificate). My Auntie has found some old letters from my Grandfathers first daughter who none of us have met. The envelopes say that she had lived in Sniatyn Raion in 1961 and a later envelope has Horodenka (Gorodenka) in 1964. I know these are neighbouring disticts in Ivano Frankivsk Region. There is no other clue as to which village/ towns she lived in and no postal/zip code. My Ukrainian is not very good. So i have had trouble finding more information. The surname on the letters is spelled кобеько which i think is Kobeko but our surname in England is spelled Kobewka. My half Auntie in Ukraine will now be in her 70s and may well have been married since the letters were written. Can anyone offer me any help on where and how to find out more information. It would be greatly appreciated.

I think I can help you and tell you where Hnat later lived and where he is buried. I know this story from the other side who has already told me my grandma and my mother. My great grandmother Maria had a brother, Jakiw, who was born about 1895-1896. Her mother, Hannah died very early and her father Vasil remarried. And the same time at the beginning of the 20th century, when Jakiw was young about 16-17, he went with his cousin from Germakiwka Borschiw area to Canada or America. My great-grandma did not know exactly, because he has sent a letter in the 20-ies home with the photo of him and his cousin together, she could not determine where this letter kam from. Sie could not read or write. She has kept this photo. Later, the great-grandmother was deported to Siberia with their young children. It could be that's why she got not any letter from him. The Great-grandma told my grandma that Hnat has accidentally lost a lot of money of Jakiw, so Jakiw could not forgive him. Hnat returned to Ukraine.
My grandmother has often told me this story and we with my mother have given up with to seek and recently I found this page and this story. The great grandmother was also hoped that she will see her brother again. Why is the Jakiw died? He was so young? Has he lived in Canada his whole Life? Has he told something about his sister?
Exscuse me for my Englisch. I hope, you can understand? I speak German and Ukraine too? I am granddaughter von Maria Kurysh Galina Götz
You can narrow the search before you start, or you can check out the longitude/latitude of any of the results you want.

Between these two, you ought to be able to find the current location, so you can go there.

Hilary
Southern California

I saw you a few times when you were a baby, and then I saw a few pix of you when you were about 5. Beautiful child.

I was at your mom's wedding and I stayed over at their house many, many times when I was a little girl. Val and Elizabeth were so good to me. My own parents were abusive.

George and Katherine were good to me too. Spent many Christmases with them at an apartment on Cortez, I think, in Chicago.
Do you know anything about your grandparents background? How they came to the US? Their story? It would help me to piece together my background, as my mother said very little about it and I know there were concentration or labor camps involved.

I have no family except daughters.....my husband of 26 years had an illness and committed suicide recently. It's very hard. Especially when finances are tough. My daughters lost a father so we really can't help each other.

I am so sorry to hear of your mom and Val and your grandparents. I was so hoping to get together with them one day and thank them for all they did for me.

Also, fill me in on how you are! Elizabeth was so proud when you came along!

Szportun family from Zarudzie

My grandmothers family was from Zarudzie, near Ternopol. Her father came to Canada in 1913 but returned to Zarudzie in 1920. My grandmother and most of her siblings stayed in Ontario, Canada. One sister stayed in Zarudzie. The family I am researching is Hrehory Szportun and his wife Kataryna Klym. They had a daugher Teklya who remained. She married Philip Procyk. Could anyone advise me how I can get information about my family?

Kuzminsky Michael and Rak Helen

Hello - First off I wish to apologize that I only speak and read English. I am in Canada. I am humbly asking for your assistance. I live in a very remote area and our local library has limited resources.

I have visited every website suggested and as I said I have written every place I can see to write to. I am wondering if you have any additional advice for me or can help or can forward my request to the right folks. I just keep getting rreplys back that say no help.

I am looking for find any information I can on my grandparents. There are no Canadian family documents due to family home house fire.

I would like to know if they had brothers and sisters and who their parents were and the date of their marriage. I know a lot to ask for but if it is possible PLEASE.

I have tried every which way to find out information on my grandparents who came from (Rymanow) Sieniawa, Galicia, Austria around the time of 1903/07. I don't know where else to go to find out about them. I have written and e-mail every place I could find and so far with no success.

Here is what I know about them.

Michael (Michal) Kuzminsky (Comisky)
1904 (September) Michaelimmigrated through Baltimore, Maryland, USA - Manifest Information
Age: 25 Est. DOB: 1879/80 DOD: April 21, 1947 - DO NOT KNOW WHAT HE DIED FROM???
Race: Ruthenian (Russniak) NOTE: old name for Ukranian
Port of Departure: Bremen, Germany Ship: Frankfurt
Port of Arrival: Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Destination: Buffalo, New York
Friend's Name: Iwan Rak and Dymtro Rak
Last Residence: (Rymanow) Sieniawa, Galicia, Austria (NOW POLAND) shown as his place of birth
On one of the immigration information things I was able to find > Michael was visiting his brother-in-law Mike Kostecky (1979 Jan 1) I think (someone sent this information). His wife's name was Mary and that they were both from Austria. They immigrated to the USA and lived in Indiana, USA.
1910 US Census shows Mike, aged 30, married 6 years, painter, car works, born Austria, both parents born Austria.

Wife: Helen (Helena) Rak (Comisky)
1907 (July 4) immigrated to USA arriving at Ellis Island, New York City. Age 25
She used the last name: Kasiminska. (ska is the female spelling)
Married: In 1904 in Austria (?) Bx 6 Hammond,Ind, USA
Last Residence: Sieniawa, Galicia, Austria - shown as place of birth (Rymanow)
Medium complexion, brown hair, brown eyes
Helen left her brother Wasko Rak in Rymanow to join her husband in the USA.
I believe that her sister Mary married Michael Kostecky who may also have been from the same location in Austria
At some point an Iwan Rak and a Dymtro Rak were mentioned as visiting them. Could be brothers or cousins - would be nice to know!
Also, traveling with them to the USA was a Michael Capko.

Additional Information -
Also we think (a cousin of mine and I) that our Uncle Stephen Comisky(Brantford) visited relatives in Quebec, Canada by the last name of Rak. Could have been Iwan or Dymtro

I hope with all my heart that you are able to help me find out more about my grandparents.

Thank you and god bless.

Janet

Hello its good to see someone else interested in Lezhanivka genealogy. There is some records available through LDS, the village is grouped with the Bucyki records. The records are very fragmented and go from 1789-1865 with massive gaps, the death records are the most complete with 1789-1850 with no gaps.

With your family being from around early 1900's you will have same problem I am running into. The records from at least the 1880's through recent times are protected by privacy laws in Ukraine and to get copies of your families records, I just learned today, you need to provide legal documents proving your related. I have no idea how to prepare these documents are who and how to present them too once I do, this is very frustration since all i need are maybe one of the baptisms for my Elko Gudz or his brothers and sisters to determine who his grandparents are!

I hope you have a tad easier time about it then I have its like beating your head on a brick wall

Some of the spellings are malyk, Maly, Malyj, and Malyn. I have no idea about how to go ablut finding information about their family in the Ukraine. If you can make any suggestions it would be appreciated.
