Surnames: Lewis, Corkill, Corkhill
Hello. I just checked the archives of this Board and it looks like I haven't mentioned my great-grandparents in a while. I want to go to a genealogy meeting tonight, so I'll just mention them briefly.
"Stanley" LEWIS was born in Liverpool, England, in 1859, and, after losing both parents, went to live in the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" in 1873. * In 1874 he was "shipped to Canada" and went to a home near Truro, N.S.
(3 LEWIS girls were on the ship with him, and they were not siblings of Stanley; he was an only-child. I have not been able to find out what happened to the 2 younger girls. The teen-age girl married a few years later.)
Mary CORKILL / CORKHILL was born in Liverpool, England, in 1860. She had an older brother and 4 younger siblings. After the death of their mother, Mary and her 4 younger siblings went to the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" in 1873. The older brother went to the "Akbar Training Ship." They had a living father but he was a Master Mariner, sailing around the world, and could not care for his children. In 1874 Mary and her siblings were "shipped to Canada" and all went to different families in Nova Scotia. The 2 youngest were boys, ages 5 and 3 at the time.
(The older brother went directly to British Columbia in 1873.) (The "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" had opened in 1873.)
In Nova Scotia, Stanley and Mary found each other and married there in 1879. They migrated to Massachusetts in 1881. They lived in Stoneham, MA, where they raised .13. children.
Note: I'm told that LEWIS is a very popular name in Liverpool, England, but I very rarely find anyone else researching that name there. The CORKILL name is very popular on the Isle of Man and that is where Evan CORKILL, the father, was born. He lived for some 20 years after his children went to live in Canada. I have no way of knowing whether they remained in contact.
