Newbury Girls School protegees

Newbury Girls School sponsored several girls from Barnardos to go to Canada and Australia over the years 1914 - 1952. In the school archives is a scrapbook containing information about their "protegees", including letters and photos in some cases. The school (which was amalgamated with the Boys' Grammar in 1975) took their responsibilities very seriously, and sent presents for the journey, telegrams, and occasionally the staff even went to see them off at Southampton. In return the girls wrote back, telling of their life in the new country.
Sent to Canada were:
In 1914 Edith G Purkiss, (she later married Cecil Bain)
In 1920 Mabel E B French
In 1929 Lucy Cox Musgrave (sadly, she died in 1930)
In 1930 Mary Evelyn Lamb
Sent to Australia were:
In 1923 Jessie Grice
In 1926 Rosina Gertrude Roberts
In 1928 Daisy May Kempson
In 1934 Edith E M Curtin
In 1949 sisters Gwen G Foster and Irene E Foster
In 1952 Glenis Cope
The girls were not local to Newbury. If anyone is researching these names and would like to have any of the material in the scrapbook copied, please let me know.

Children who arrived on the Vancouver, April 1899

I'm looking for information on the group of children who arrived in Saint John, NB in April 1899 on the ship Vancouver that sailed from Liverpool. The 6 children were James Thomas (16 yrs old), Fred Connor (17), Laura (11) and Rose (7) Salvage, Florance (9) and Alice (7) Smith. They travelled as "Mrs. Foskis party". "Foskis" is a guess looking at the passenger list, although I would doubt that it is right. I am thinking that they are home children, and would like to find out more information about the group that they travelled with. It is believed that Alice Smith is my GG Grandmother.

Thank you
Heather

Trying to confirm Grandfather was a British Home Child or a "Waif and Stray"

My grandfather, George BOWDEN was born in Battersea, Wandsworth, LONDON in Aug 1895 - he was a twin (brother was Alfred). They were the children of John and Eliza, with 3 older siblings, (William, Thomas and Nellie aka Helen). Another brother, Robert, was born in 1902. Mother, Eliza died in 1913.

At some point, George was sent to Canada (a civil service application he filed in 1940 indicates that he attended school in Toronto in 1910 at age of 15) and my best guess is that he was sent under the Home Child scheme since most of the family remained in England. He listed his years of elementary school from 1902 to 1910 but I don't know if that was in UK or Canada. "Family lore" says that the parents were alcoholics, making it a distinct possibility that Grandfather could have been sent into a "Waifs and Strays" home or to Canada.

I've recently found "sample" case records online of children who went into the COE's Society for Waifs and Strays homes between the 1880's and early 1900's.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how you can go about having a search done of their complete records and if a record is found, obtain a copy??

Thanks!
Hi Listners
Have searched a few lists for Barnardo homes in Kent and was surprised not to see Farningham's Homes for Little Boys, South Darenth, Kent, not among these. I had been told otherwise, but cannot find the source. Would like to track down the records pertaining to my ggrandfather, George Henry PARKER (b 1877/8 Kent), but need to know if Barnardos holds these records

Thank you
Regards
ron

I am trying to gain information on Frank [also called Francis] Darinis [also spelling of Darinus] He is listed among children sent to Canada in association with Mrs. Birt's letters as Frank Darinis from Vicars 28 Dec 1895. He claimed to have been born in Liverpool 11 July 1888. According to his attestation papers he joined up in 1916. He name does not appear in the WW1 records as having been killed. We have no information about him for dates and places of death or burial. We do know also that he had married Mabel Agnes Sadler 13 April 1910 in Holiness Movement Church in Montreal. His attestation papers say he was with 14 Company Canadian Army Service Corps.
I've checked web site for Bernardo's but I haven't found WHY the children were sent to Canada and Austrialia...

Sent to Canada - but not an orphan or pauper, so why?

An ancestor of mine, Stanley Howard R Kohler, arrived in Canada in 1880. He is found on the Manitoba census 1901, and was approximately just 11 when he arrived in Canada, alone.
He was not an orphan - his parents, Thomas and Emma Kohler, were still very much alive and he was the third of ten children.

He was born 18 May 1869 in Clapham, London, lived until at least 1874 in Margate, Kent, and then at some stage the family moved again as they are on the 1881 census in Lambeth, London - without Stanley of course. His elder siblings, Maud Emilie J Kohler (born 1864), and Estell Helena Kohler (born 1863) would have been adults by the time of his departure (assuming Maud survived into adulthood - I know Estell did). However, by the year Stanley left there were four younger Kohler children in the family and a further two would be born within four years of his leaving.

So, we can assume that the family were not paupers as they would surely have had to lose their other children too and I can account for over half of Stanley's younger siblings, all growing up and remaining in England. Stanley's father, Thomas, went into Liquidation in August 1874 but that hardly explains why Stanley should be removed to another country and the rest remain at home.

The 1901 census describes Stanley as a farmer, a trade totally alien to our family, so I assume, given the date of his departure, that occupation and the fact that he was on Manitoba records, that he was a British Home Child. The question is, why?

Having discounted the possibility of him being an orphan or from a pauper family, I wondered if children were sent away on this scheme if they were convicted of crime? And if they were, where would I look for information? I have read that children were often taken from their parents for what was perceived at the time as "for their own good" but surely if this was the theory the other children would have been taken away from Thomas and Emma Kohler too?

Can anyone please help me work out what might have happened and why?

Thank you.

Films made ar the Barnardo office in 1939

I recently received a package from the Barnardo Homes in regard to my grandfather (Harry Jones) who was taken into the Barnardo Homes in 1910 and then sent to Canada in 1912.

In this package was an assortment of letters, and one of the letters talks about when my grandfather visited the Barnardo Homes office in December 1939.

To make a long story short, the letter states how the officers at Barnardos were quite pleased to see my grandfather. He was "the first Canadian in uniform to stop into the office". It goes on to say that they took a short "cinema strip" of the head of Barnardos greeting my grandfather in the office. Then, it continues to say that some of "these cinema strips were put together to show to our boys in the service".

My contact at the Barnardo Homes has heard of these cinema strips, but unfortunately does not know where they are (or even if they still exist.)

So, my question is----

Does ANYBODY know who I can contact? I would give anything to see a film of my grandfather, in uniform, in 1939. I'm stuck. I don't where to go from here. The BBC perhaps?

Any assistance or any scrap of info would be appreciated.

Thank you!

It is out of print.

My Grandmother was orphaned in New York City sometime between 1870 and 1880. Her name was Teresa M.O'Flannagan.

She was born in 1867, her parents were James and Margaret O'Flannagan.
Spelling variations may be O'Flanagan, Flannagan, Flanagan.

It has been awhile since I first wrote to the list.for help. I know a little bit more now then I did then. George F Quelch was born in Windsor, Berkshire, England . He was a twin, his sister was Jessie Matilda Quelch. Their parents were Caroline Maria (Fitch) and William Quelch.I have found them both in the 1901 census in England Jessie with here Mother and older sister in Brentfield. George is an inmate at the National Waifs' Assn. otherwise known as DR. Barnardo's Homes. Home and School for Little Boys-Leopold House, 199 Burdett Road, London East. His father is a servent in the Old Windsor Union Infirmary and Lunatic Ward. George came to Canada with Barnardo's from Liverpool 19 Sept. 1901 on the SS Tunisian arvd 27 Sept, 1901. I cannot find him on a census in Canada. I found him on a boarder crossing in 1916 to USA from Canada and he lists his arrival to Canada in 1909 on the SS Sicilian, Can anyone help me find him in Canada on a census? His older brother William Walter Quelch ( my gggrandfather) came to Canada with his family in 1910. I cannot find either of them. Any help would be appreciated.

Help!!
I am looking for a Thomas Breen, he was born Sept.9,1881 in Everton England,to John Breen and Maria Jane Ramsden. He went into Fazakerly Cottage Home from 1889 to 1893, at which time he came to Canada as a Home Child. Thomas was 12 years old when he arrived in Montreal aboard the Sardinian. Thomas was with a group of 78 children from the Salford Protection Society. The children were taken care of by a Miss Lacy.I have not been able to find any information on Thomas until the 1901 census were I find him in Athabaskaville working for a Mr.Gingras.That would have made him 20 years old. I sure hope someone out there can help me find out were he was between 1893 and 1901.
Thanks,
Debbie

My Great grandmother, Nellie Wright (born ~1893) was aboard the ship Victorian that departed Liverpool and landed in Quebec 14 July 1907. However, her name is not on the passenger manifest. I am wondering if she may have been one of the British Home Children that were on board. I understand that their names were sometimes changed... These children were taken to the British home at Niagara-on-the-lake. Would anyone have information about archives at this home or how such information could be obtained? She is my "brick wall" and my grandfather (her son, who was given up for adoption and is now 97) would love to know more about her. Thank you.

Henry Bowen sent to Canada 1892

My query is whether or not any of these children were sent to Canada then back to England to be sent to Canada again. I have received info from Barnardo's that Henry was sent to Canada in 1892 and they have notes on him about where he was living that makes us believe this is our Henry Bowen. The problem is that Henry states in the 1901 Census of Canada that he immigrated here in 1887, five years earlier than the records say. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Regards, Kathleen from Canada

Henry Bowen-British Home Child

I'm trying to piece together information about my great grandfathers family. I've received info from Barnardos, which I must say came very quickly. He had two sisters who stayed in Britain but they had very little information about them or Henry's parent who were both deceased. The only reference that I did get was that his one sisters name was Alice and she was in service at Steel or Street House in Leytonstone. The other sister (no name given) was in service in Victoria Park. Can anyone advise me where to look in the 1891 census of England to find them? Thanks in advance, Ken Bowen (great grandson of Henry Bowen)

Documentary on British Home Children

Hello. My name is Leslea Mair, and I am a documentary filmmaker in Canada. My grandfather was a BHC – a “Barnardo’s boy”.

I am making a documentary about descendents of British Home Children attempting to find and make contact with relatives of their ancestor in England. I have support from a national broadcaster.

I am looking for people who would be willing to allow me and a small camera crew follow their journey through their search for information and accompany them to England to meet their relatives.

This will be a vehicle to tell the story of the British Home Children in Canada and their descendents. It has potential for not only national broadcast in Canada, but possibly in the UK and beyond.

If you or anyone you know are interested in this project and are planning or would like to plan to travel to England next spring or summer, please contact me.

Leslea Mair

Zoot Capri Entertainment
Phone: (306) 565-3311
Website: www.zootcapri.com

Frederick came to Canada in 1903 on the ship Bavarian, accompanied with an older brother, Albert. They were with the Crusade of Rescue, operated, I believe by the Catholic Emigrating Association. I am trying to locate the OWENS family that Frederick was sent to work for, we think in the State of Iowa. Are there records indicating when he might have crossed the border from Canada to US? Father Ban's Home is mentioned. Will appreciate any suggestions or help in locating this information.
Thanks,
Karol Gale

My husband's grandfather, Frederick Cornelius Jobson was born in England, approximately 1878 +/-. At age 5 or 6, in 1884, he was sent to Canada as a British Home Child. We have been unable to find any information on him, regarding who his family (parents and siblings)were, where or when he was born. Harriet/Hattie Jobson came with him, and he believed her to be his sister. Would anyone have any information on these two children before they left England?

Are All Dr. Bernardo's Children Orphans?

I have found two sisters listed on the ship Friesland arriving at Philadelphia on 30 April 1906. The older sister (age 12) is listed as a domestic while the younger sister (age 10) is listed as a child. The note for the entire page states "Children going to Dr. Bernardo's Home, Peterboro, Ontario, Canada".

After finding them on the passenger list I went to the Bernardo's site to learn more about Home Children. My impression from reading the information there is that Home Children were orphans. Or am I mistaken? I find the children, along with their mother, in the 1910 census in Detroit, Michigan, USA, not too far from Peterboro, Ontario, Canada.

Is this unusual? What information could I possibly learn from sending for their information from Dr. Bernardo's?

Thanks in advanced for all your help.

Suz
Dearborn, MI, USA

Was my Great-Grandfather a Home Child?

I am starting to think maybe he was, and I'd appreciate if anyone would give me their opinion whether or not they think he might have been.

The only written documentation I've ever found on him was his marriage certificate, in June 1920, Toronto, Ontario. This is what he claimed:

Name: Clarence Walker

Year of Birth: 1894

Place of Birth: London, England

Father's Name: George Walker

Father's Place of Birth: England

Mother's Name: Margaret Thomas

I can find no record of him in either the 1901 England or Canada Census, and he is not found in the 1911 Canadian Census. He did not have an accent, so we can only assume he came to Canada when he was a young child, or else was very good at a Canadian accent.

Whenever he was asked about his past, we would simply wave his hand and say nothing. Apparently, some members of his wife's family didn't think he was good enough for her. He never told anyone about any of his family members, but did mention he'd worked on a farm for some time.

I've searched the collectionscanada.ca lists of Home Children, but no matches so far.

Would he, or someone else, have changed his name?

Thank you to anyone who can help me shed some light on this possibilty!

Amy

I've found the families of Florence Susan and Ethel Georgina Herbert , Bernardo Home Children sent to Toronto Canada in 1904. Florence was 4 years old and Ethel was 10 years old when they were sent from London, England. For some reason they are listed as Florence Susan and Ethel Georgina Gladwell, their mother's maiden name. I have their birth certificates and their last names are listed as Herbert. Neither girl remembered their birth date or year of birth. Both forgot their middle names.
Two sisters were left in an orphanage in London.

Hi,

A few days ago I discovered the name of the ship that my grandmother and her sister were sent to Canada on. They were shipped in 1907 from Liverpool and sent to Mr. Merry's home in Stratford, Ontario. They spelled the names wrong (written down as Palfry). If anyone finds anything on Mr. Merry's home or on Evelyn or Hilda Palfry (not the correct spellings, it is Eveline and Hilda Palfery). Their names are in the Canadian records site, but there must be more information somewhere on the home they were sent to.

Thanks in advance,
Jan

hello list
Can someone help me locate a Robert marshall, He was born on 17 aug 1869 in scotland. He came to Canada 10 jul 1874 aboard the Phoenician with his sister Mary Jane Marshall. (my Grt Grandmother). Between 1930 and 1940 she
said she would like to visit her brother Robert in Canada. I do not think she ever went to see him. I would like to know what happened to him. where he lived, what census he was in, when he died, who he married did he have children. As you can tell I know nothing of him and do not have a clue as to where to start
thankyou
Florence Susan and Ethel Georgina Gladwell London to Toronto 1904

Florence Susan Gladwell age 4(not 10 as ArchiviaNet shows) and her sister Ethel Georgina Gladwell age 10 arrived in 1904 on the SS Southwark, from Liverpool. They departed on 9 Oct 1904. Party was Br Bernardo's Party, destination Toronto. They both were born in St Saviour Southwark London.
Florence Susan must have depended on her sister Ethel Georgina for family information as on their Marriage certificates it has their names slightly altered, to Florence Elizabeth Gladwell and Ethel Gladwell. Florence E. married James William Ball in 1917. She said she was born in London, her father was George Gladwell and her mother Florence Elizabeth Herbert and that she was 17 years old. This is partly correct. Florence was born Florence Susan Herbert in December 10th, 1899 to George Edgar Herbert and Florence Eliza Gladwell. Ethel Georgina was born Ethel Georgina Herbert in 1893, same parents.
Ethel Georgina married George (Louis) Paquette in Oshawa in 1911. Ethel knew her father was a legal clerk. The rest of the information was similar to Florence's.
In London Florence and Ethel had two other sisters, Winifred Gertrude(b 1897) and Maud Ethel Herbert(b. May 5th1903) who stayed in London with the Herbert last name.
I think their mother didn't actually legally marry their father, but why would 2 children be placed in the Bernardo Home with their mother's maiden name rather than their name given at birth?
I was doing research for Maud Herbert who lived in London, England and by luck found out 2 of her sisters had their name changed and they were sent to Canada.
Florence E. Gladwell Ball was buried in the New Hope Cemetery in Hespeler(Cambridge), Ontario in 1972. One son was born in 1921 Ronald J. Ball.
I can't track Ethel Paquette passed Toronto about 1920.
I have the information about the families of these two women before they were sent to Canada when their last name was Herbert and would be happy to share what I have with the descendants of the two families.

LIDDLEs in Westoe, South Shields

Looking for my 2x Great Grandparents they are Robert LIDDLE and Mary LOGG. I am having trouble finding ANY information on them. I am assuming that they were both born in South Shields but I don't know.

They had the following children (that i know of) Robert (1880), William (1885), James (1886) and John George (1889). All I know is that when John George was very young (abt 2 yo) they were orphaned. I have found the children on the 1891 England Census living with their Grandmother Catherine Logg in Salerna St, Westoe.

Marriages for the children:
Robert m Anne Farqharson;
William m Olive (nee unknown) and
James m Margaret Ann Oliphant (my Great Grandparents).

I also know (folklore) that George was taken to the US. And the other boys were brought up by a PLUMB family. Again cannot find any record of these people.

Thanks in advance for any help offered
Jacqui
Melbourne, Australia
Liverpool Catholic Children's Protection Society?

Hi,

I have been seeking information on the above referenced organization which sent my great-grandmother from their care to Canada. Has anyone had any luck locating records for the Liverpool Catholic Children's Protection Society in the 1880-1890's? Nugent does not have records that far back, and there is no longer an extant organization that I can find who does.

I am specifically seeking information on the child below:

From the National Archives of Canada.

SS Circassian (part of the Allan Line), which departed 7 September 1882 from Liverpool, calling at Londonderry on 8 September 1882 and arriving Quebec 18 Sep 1882. All children supervised by Miss Yates. Destination, not listed. (Microfilm Reel: C-4532)

CARROL, CATHERINE, 8 YEARS, FEMALE

Miss Yates appears to be either the wife or daughter of Richard Yates who was the Secretary of the organization.

My great grandmother suffered more than her share of hardships, dying in childbirth in her mid-30's as she gave birth to my grandmother. I very much want to honor her memory through her familial history and her life story...so if you can help, please feel free to email me at:

everso @ hotmail . com

Thanks so much in advance!
Norah E.

Until last week I did not know anything about British Home Children and now my family research has me trying to find out as much as I can. My wifes grandmother in Kent, England had three other siblings, two of which were sent to Canada as orphans. I have found Dorothy Brown age 13 arriving in Quebec aboard the SS Victorian 31 July 1914 bound for McPhersons in Stratford, Ontario. Her brother Sidney Charles Brown age 14 arrived in St John 29 March 1914 aboard the SS Sicilian bound for Dr Barnardo's in Toronto, Ontario. I have been able to find a little about Dr Barnardo's, but not McPherson's and would appreciate any information about it. Also, where can I go to posibly obtain records of these children? Any help to further along this search would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Whilst researching my great great uncle, Daniel Brown, I have discovered the enclosed boys were British Home Children sent from Clifton Industrial School for Boys in Bristol to Canada in 1885. I had no idea Daniel was a British Home Child and I add the information here in case it is of use to someone else.

Boys’ names and age at arrival in Canada:-
George Thomas aged 16
Fred Chadwick aged 16
Joseph Jordon (or Jordan) aged 14
Samuel Monk aged 16
Robert Monk aged 14
The following boys travelled with the above and are also mentioned on the 1881 Bristol census for Clifton Industrial School for Boys	.
Daniel Brown age 15 - birthplace Bristol
Edwin Pick aged 16 - birthplace Derby
Thomas Holbrook aged 16 – birthplace Bristol
Henry Woodward aged 16 – birthplace Derby
Henry Mason aged 16 – birthplace Derby.

Travel details:-
Year of arrival: 1885
Ship:	SS Scandinavian (another website says SS Sardinian so perhaps it was difficult to transcribe)
Port of departure: Liverpool
Departure date: 9TH April 1885
Port of arrival; Halifax
Arrival date: 19th April 1885 (other website says 18th April)
Party:	Industrial school of Bristol
Destination: New Brunswick & Nova Scotia
Comments: a few scattered entries plus ten young men from Bristol
microfilm reel: C-4512
Reference: RG76 C 1b

Another web site mentions the following and I wondered if they were the same 10 boys:
Ship arrivals port of Quebec, sponsored emigrants:-
Year – 1885
Date – April 10th
Ship - ?
Organisation - Industrial School of Bristol - placed around Annapolis - 5 left and "are wandering about the country"
Male - 10

James Alexander Alfred Wilkins is my father who came to Canada as a Home Child in 1927. This information from a ship passenger list. The ship was the Andania and it docked in Quebec on Sept 10. I believe that he then was sent to Hamilton by train but ended up working on a farm in Huron County. I have been able to trace his fathers birth and his grandfathers birth but I've been unable to find my father's birth registered. He was born May 20, 1913. Nor can I find my grandmother, Gwendoline Louise Goodenough who later married a Mr Lovell after Mr Wilkins died. If anyone has come across these names I would appreciate hearing from you.

I was looking for my grandmother, Ellen Watson, who was to have been returned to the Home sometime around 1911.

I have found a listing for what I believe to be my maternal grandmother on the SS Pretoria from Glasgow to Canada in 1916. She was listed as one of the home children--her name was Eva Clarke. However, she was 19 years of age at the time. I am curious as to why she would be listed as a home child at that age. The Alan Line registry does list a lot of home children during that year on their ships.
If anyone has any suggestions on where I might search from here, I would appreciate it. If it is her, she gave birth to my mother in the early 1930's in Montreal, and then died shortly thereafter along with her husband, William Whitmore--so my mother has never had any information about her at all.

Looking for any help in my search for history of Mildred Ina Hanson. Born 07/23/21. Mildred was brought to Massachusetts by an aunt, from New Brunswick in 1930 at the age of 9 because, as the story goes, the family had too many children to feed. I have found her immigration papers which list her farther as Charles Harry Hanson and mother, Annie (Orr) Hanson but that's where her history stops. I cannot locate a list of their children and The Canadian Vital Statistics can't locate Mildred's birth certificate. I strongly suspect she was one of the Home Children. Does anyone know how i can find her adoption papers, if they even had them? I'm not sure Hanson would be the name she arrived with.

I've had little success in finding records regarding my grandfather's coming to Canada with the Home Children program with Barnado Boy's program. His name was Frederick William Gravener, born 1876 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, was orphaned in 1891. Came to Canada in 1893 at seventeen yrs of age, settling in Langbank, Sask. Canada.

If anyone can help point me in the right direction to find out more info, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks CDB

Bernardo children

To Lorine
I. To answer some of your questions. I sent and email to the Bernardo email addres asking for information. Still waiting for a response

I did send and email to the Marj Kholi's site at waterloo university stating that I indeed knew on of the children, but no response as yet. I was told that if Frank was killed in WW1 his name would have been on the war memorial records..and its not. I just received a note from a researcher in Ottawa that said he only was in the military for 10 days and then was released for medical reasons.

We don't know where or when he passed away...We don't have any burial records.... Some where between 1916 when he signed up and 1928 when his exwife remarried...a total blank. We don't even have any record of a divorce, but knowing Mabel... his wife in 1916, there had to have been a divorce, but the grandkids were left with the understanding that she returned to Saskatchewan as a widow.

I have ordered his military records... but these other items about him we would like to find out. We wanted to know why he was sent to Canada and who his ancestors were. thanks for your help so far..I have checked out all the links you sent... thanks Gordon
