Mother in Orphanage

Hello, I need some help to find out about my mother Florence Griffin. As a child, she told me that she was raised in an orphanage. I grew up knowing absolutely nothing about my mother's life or background. Since she died April 4,1980, I still wondered who my mother was. She never talked about her parents or if she had sisters or brothers. She had a son she named Donald Reginald Barfield who just died Jan.1,2000 not knowing anything about who his mother was or his father.Donald was born April 14,1930. According to his social security application, he was born in Montclair, NJ but they have no record of his birth there. The names of my mother's parents on her social security application were EmmaBelle Flucker, mother and Heywood Griffin, father. There seems to be no record for either of these people. My mother had a history of mental problems and I'm wondering if these people existed at all or if they were a part of her imagination. I would like to know my roots. This has haunted me my entire life not knowing anything about the people who influenced my life. My mother listed Dothan, Alabama as her place of birth. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

orphanage in Montgomery near Pill ST in 1950's

I am looking for the name of an orphanage that was in Montgomery in the early 50's, my father and my uncle were sent there by the state when their mother could'nt afford to care for them, I think they were there for less than a year, but my father has pictures of himself with the lady who ran the orphanage, I believe it was around 1953-54. If anyone could provide me with a list of orphanages that existed at this time, I would really appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know where I may be able to get copies of the records that should have been filed when the state took the children?

Thank you,
Mercy

My father was in an orphanage located in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950's. He was born in October of 1957 and I believe that he was only there a short while, maybe a few months before being adopted by my grandparents. My family never talks about it. The one time it was mentioned I managed to get his name that he went by when he was born. It was James Sizemore or Skidmore. I can't remember which last name. If anyone has any information on him or maybe the name of the orphanage, that would be great.

I am trying to find an orphanage or children's home in north central AL that was open in 1904 and still open in 1971. My grandfather was sent there as a child, and ran away. His brother stayed until he was 18. Unfortunately, both are deceased, and I have no idea where it is or what the name of it was. My grandfather's name was Walter William Suggs. His brother was David Eugene Suggs. Can anyone help?
I'm seeking information concerning my mother Florence Griffin or Barfield. My mother told me she was raised in an Orphange. She was born in Dothan Alabama. Her date of birth was January 7, 1915. I think her parents were Emma Belle Flucker and Heywood Griffin. In 1931, she was working in Essex county, in Montclair, NJ. she had a son Donald Barfield, born April 14, 1931. There is no record of her birth. I have been trying to see if she is listed on the census. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

From an article in the Mobile Press Register, Apr 19 1964:
"In 1839 a yellow fever epidemic struck Mobile leaving children orphaned by the yellow scourge.
Immediately church women from five denominations organized a Protestant Orphans Asylum Society.
On July 4 1845 the women, representatives of Methodist, Baptist, Christian, Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches saw the beginning of that aim being laid as a cornerstone at 911 Dauphin St. On April 26 1846 the building was dedicated and put into full operation."
During the late 1960's the home became the Baptist Children's Home.
In 1971 it was closed and sold to a technical college.
It burned about 1976 but was restored and stills stands. Lately it has been used as a senior citizen's home. I don't know what happened to the records.

I'm new to the list. Happy to have stumbled across this list. I would love to get any information on the Allen Memorial and Protestant Orphanages in Mobile. My father and siblings (all deceased) were raised in these two homes in the 1930s-1940s. Their parents were still alive and the mother visited them there, but they remained in the homes due to economics and personal reasons. I'm in search of my grandmother's (Essie May Taylor) family history. How does one go about obtaining records? I haven't had much luck with the Archdiocese in 10 years of trying. Thank you.
