Re: Highland Heights 1950s
Hi Nicole:
I was at Highland Heights from 1943 to 1951. I have a copy of that booklet you are referring to, although not in my hands at the moment. I'm having a few pictures from it digitally remade. The company that is doing so won't have the booklet back to me for a couple of weeks. I'd gladly make a copy for you when I get it back.
I have to tell you, though, there are a few pictures of the children there at Highland Heights, but no names. The staff (nuns, Father Donnelly, and Mr. Davin, Ms. Coffey and Ms. Brennan) also have pictures but their names are included.
There is a group of us who are trying to recreate the names and dates of the children there at Highland Heights. The agencies that apparently have such information will not give it out. They say it is for confidentiality purposes.
If your grandmother can remember some names of girls in her groups (they were called divisions) it sure would be helpful. I don't know if these names would ring a bell with her; they were in my class or sisters of some of the boys I knew. Natalie Mancini, Joyce Laundria, Alice Cowan, Angela Gardino, Carole Vitale, Beatrice Texeira.
If you want, I can put together some memorable events and activities that went on at Highland Heights. Such things as 'Field Day' at the end of summer, hikes to East Rock, swimming at Silver Sands, visiting Sunday, Friday night movies, and Christmas celebrations come to mind. There are a few not so good memories also.
If you wish to communicate through e-mails, you can contact me at: silvercloud3@yahoo.com. My name is George
