Have you tried each of the county courthouses in the state of Ohio? In Calif anyway, the court sends 2 certified copies of the court's "abstract" listing what each count, special allegation, or enhancement attached to each count is. The sheriff gets one copy for transporting the inmate to the state prison, the 2nd one is sent to the prison. The court keeps the original in the court file. Each law enforcement also gets notified, I don't believe criminal felonies or misdeanor records in california are destroyed. I would try the courthouses in each county first. In California there are 3 indexes, one by case title, one by chronological order, and one by alpa list. My guess is other states do similiar things. Sometimes they are on microfilm, or computer, but don't believe they get destroyed, unless minor infractions. The circumstances are usually in a probation report, in Calif. they're public record about 30 or 60 days from the time of filing or sentencing, whichever is earlier, then they become confidential. Try and talk to a clerk at the courthouses. Any of all counties can send someone to the state prison. Law enforcement involved such as city police would also have a record at one time, unknown on their destruction of records procedures. State Criminal agencies also have criminal records, but unknown if available to public or just other agencies for the justice department.

William Lloyd Benham Florida orphan.

My mother left my father before I was born and we never talked about him.

After mom died I got buzy looking for him. This is what I have found out abt him in my research.
He(William Lloyd Benham) grew up in Florida as an orphan. He obtained a social security number at the age of 16 (around 1940) and it lists his place of residence as Jacksonville, Florida. He witnessed the murder of his mother(Emma Brazzell) around 1929 at age 3-4. The man listed on his birth certificate (Charles Fred Benham) is an inmate in the Ohio Penitentiary in the 1930 and 1940 census. Young William living at the Ohio House of Refuge next to the prison in the 1930 census.

I have attempted to locate prison records revealing what Charles was in prison for. The prison is no longer there and I have been unable to locate records.

There is no death record for Emmie Brazzell (Native American) and no marriage record for Charles and Emma. Maybe they never married.

The only thing I think I can do now is possibly find a newspaper article about her death. Or records of his life as an orphan. The last record I have of her is her as a mother to a baby girl who died at 2 days old in July 1928 in Miami-Dade Florida. Any advice in locating information would be appreciated.

itsmekacy@yahoo.com.

Hello and thank you very much for your reply and information.

I have found out Junior House, which was not designated an orphanage per se, was located at 75 Sanford Street. It was used as child welfare work, dating from 1947. Junior House was later taken over by the County Welfare Foundation and continued as a children's home into the 1960s. It had been known as "Church View Cottage" at one time because it overlooks the St. Benedict the Moor Church. I will try to put a link to the story.

http://staugustine.com/stories/031804/new_2198938.shtml

I have found a picture of the Church, but have not been able to find a picture of the house located on 75 Sanford St. as yet.
The map shows Largo as a city near Pinellas Park. The Pinellas County Home is an entry in the special census of 1933. As far as I know, that census collected statistics, not names of inmates. "Child care, under public auspices, for white children age 4+; affiliated with the Juvenile Court."--page 59 of "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes: An Historical Directory" (published in 1982). There is no address or additional citations for that home, nor is there any entry for the town of Pinellas Park.

Reg Niles

There are over a dozen entries on p. 62-63 for institutions in Tampa in "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes: An Historical Directory" (published in 1982). 147 libraries claim to possess a copy of this book. This is according to WorldCat, an online resource accessible to librarians.

There are no entries for Ybor City or Ebo City.

The federal census of 1940 is expected to be made public after 72 years. It would contain entries for individuals residing in institutions of all types.

Reg Niles

The 1964 edition of the Official Catholic Directory (published annually by P.J. Kenedy) treats the Diocese of St. Augustine on pages 708-12.

In the city of St. Augustine, it lists the parish of St. Benedict the Moor, at 86 Central Ave., but no mention of Junior House---nor is it mentioned among the schools, convents and institutions in that city.

If you wish to do research in a library, here is a bibliographic citation :

FLORIDA.
Junior House in St. Augustine, FL was not officially an orphanage ("was a children's home") , but children were adopted from there. Does anyone have any information on this organization? The last contact I had with it was in 1958 but am interested in how records could be found. Did find a small article on it in an online newspaper archive and found out it was in a building across the street from the St. Benedict the Moor chrurch. Barb

No, I didn't live there, but I visited many times. I am looking for a girl, Caroline Straud, who lived there. She was a big part of my family in the early fifties. When I visited there I did meet many other kids. My folks would bring both girls and boys to our house. One time my mom taught a group of boys how to bake a cake. I wonder if your dad and uncle were in that group or if they knew Caroline.
Janie

I am assuming that James does not know his birth name. If he did, he could look up his entry through Ellis Island. It is unlikely that someone coming from Spain would enter the U.S. from any other port, although quite a large number came through the Port of New Orleans. Louisiana is a predominantly Catholic state. Perhaps you should be looking for a Catholic Charities Orphanage in Louisiana.

If you were to look up the local Catholic Charities office nearest you, the director there could tell you the name of the archives for Catholic Charities which I have forgotten, but it's in Illinois, I believe. Something like Palatine, Ill. I forget exactly.

The director can tell you the names and locations of Catholic Orphanages in existence for the time frame you are seeking.
He may even have more information.

I am 60 years old. I was in a Catholic Orphanage. They had me there, and I had already found the Orphanage and its records. I was seeking information on the Orphanage, which I received, along with some pictures which recalled memories even though I was quite young. Like the Sisters of Charitiy's coronets. I remembered them exactly.

Hi Dorothy,

I am aware of an orphanage that was in or around Sarasota FL. It burned down years ago, I'm not sure what year. Apparently, "all" records were burned with it. I find that hard to believe since the courts have to approve the adoption and make it legal. I too am searching for someone from an orphanage in FL. My aunt. Her birth name was Elwanda Johnson, and her adoptive name is Wanda Jane Lytle. She was born around 1953. Good luck in your search. If I find out the name of the orphanage that burned down, I will let you know as well.

My Birthmother was abandoned at 1½, and raised until 17 in an orphanage in Jacksonville. The year would have been 1916-1918. Do you have any information you might have found, about an orphanage in Jacksonville? Thank You.
