Southern Christian Home, 1011 Cleburne Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia

I have learned so much, that I felt compelled to start a new thread with updated information:

I finally have accurate information regarding "The Home". I was a resident from 1951 - 1956 along with one brother. Mrs. Chapman was the matron of The Southern Christian Home at the time. We were adopted into a wonderful family and in 1967 I contacted Mrs. Chapman, who gave me a telephone number for a minister who had often visited me at "The Home" and he contacted my birth mother and asked her permission to give me her telephone number. She said it was okay and in 1968 I met my birth mother and extended family. I have two additional half brothers and two half sisters that I was unaware of.

The Southern Christian Home was once a beautiful plantation home belonging to Augustus Hurt. It was of historical importance during the Civil War because it was occupied by General Sherman during the Battle of Atlanta. It was torn down and today it is the site of the Carter Presidential Library. A historical marker is in the parking lot of the Carter Center which marks the plantation and house location.

I received the following information from the Atlanta History Center:

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Southern Christian Home.

You are correct that the home was located at 1011 Cleburne Avenue and it was formerly the residence of Augustus Hurt. According to an historical marker at the Carter Presidential Library, "200 yards northeast stood the plantation residence of Augustus F. Hurt (1830-1921), built 1858 and razed by Federal Forces, 1864."
http://georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu/gahistmarkers/hurthousehi...

According to John Adams' obituary (Adams was a former president of the home) in the April 16, 1999 Atlanta Journal Constitution, the home was moved to a location on Briarcliff Road in the 1960s before closing in the 1980s.

I hope this helps somewhat.

Regards,
Sue VerHoef
Reference Manager | Atlanta History Center
130 West Paces Ferry Road NW
Atlanta, Georgia 30305
p | 404.814.4042 f | 404.814.4175
e | sverhoef@AtlantaHistoryCenter.com"

According to Jim Struve, a former employee of The Southern Christian Home, "The Southern Christian Children's home was relocated to Briarcliff Road (I believe the address was 914 Briarcliff Rd, N.E. - it was next to Callanwolde). It changed names and became Laurel Heights Hospital sometime in the 1980's or 1990's."

I want to thank all those people who have helped me get updated information.

I would like to get a picture of The Southern Christian Home/Augustus Hurt House if anyone has such a thing.

I would like to make contact with anyone who was ever a resident.
St. Joseph Catholic Orphanage - Washington, GA

I'm looking for any orphanage records for the St. Joseph Orphanage in Washington, GA. I believe my great grandfather's (George Washington Wheeler) brothers Harry Wheeler and Aaron Wheeler may have been placed in that orphanage in the late 1800s. I understand the brothers may have been placed in the orphanage after the marriage separation of their parents, James Wheeler and Flora Jones. I'd be grateful for info on that orphanage as I know little about it. E-mail to me at dale30809@aol.com, dale30809ga@aol.com, or dale30809ga@yahoo.com, Dale Boyd, Evans, GA.
Any information as to how/when/where its records from 1902 through 1918 can be obtained will be appreciated.

It is my understanding the orphanage was affiliated with the St. Paul's or St. John's Episcopal Church in Macon.

Thank you.

Jounalist is seeking information about Covington, GA orphange that was run by Dinah Pace Watts from 1890 through the mid 1930s. The school was charted in 1890 as the Covington Colored Orphans Home, but was later renamed The Reed Home and Industrial School. My guess is, based on age, that some of the students who lived at the school in the 1930s might still be alive. Below is a list from 1930. I am trying to get in contact with any of them. I am trying to find my grandfather and his sister and I know that he was born in 1926 and he said his mother died when he was young and she put him and his sister in an orphanage because she didn't want her brother to raise them because she said he treated his children like work horses. My grandfather's name was Millard Buford Robinson B: 1926 in Banks Co. GA and his sister's name was Willie Mae Robinson birth year not known. Thank you for you time., Sandy

Catholic Orphanage - Atlanta Georgia

Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada!

Can anybody point me in the right direction to locate an orphanage in downtown Atlanta which was run by the Catholic church during the early 1960's? I believe by that early 1980's it had been closed down and the building boarded up.

Am also looking for a private Jesuit school during the same time and in the same area. Does anybody have any information as to how I can locate this school.

Does anybody recognize the name Father Thomas?

I've really hit a brick wall with this. Any help of any kind would be appreciated.

Looking for Orphanages in late 1800s in North Georgia

I'm looking for any orphanage records for North GA. I've just found out my great grandfather, James Lonzo "Lonnie" Boyd, may have been adopted either in Hall Co., GA, or Stephens Co., GA, sometime after he was born in 1877. Lonnie was raised by James B. and Mary A. Boyd of Hall Co., GA, and he died in 1934 in Toccoa, GA. While I knew for many years Lonnie was not directly descended from James & Mary Boyd, I've only recently been told by an older relative that Lonnie was adopted. I was told Lonnie's parents were both killed in a buggy - train collision, but I don't know how old Lonnie would have been at the time of adoption. I'd be grateful for info on orphanages in that area would be very much appreciated as I know absolutely nothing about those institutions. E-mail to me at dale30809@aol.com, dale30809ga@aol.com, or dale30809ga@yahoo.com, Thanks very much.

We(my family) have always been told that my greatgrandmother was an orphan. Her name was Lilla B. Clements. She was born in May 1878, according to the 1900 census. She married Asa T. Robinson,on 17 Jul. 1898 in Americus,Sumter, GA. The "B'' is belived to stand for Bertha. A cousin doing research says he had heard from his family who knew her that her family was from England. I am just trying to make sure one of the stories is true. She may have been in an orphanage in Macon,Bibb,GA. Does anyone know if there was an orphanage there or near by in the late 1870's?

My grandmother, b. Thelma Booth (1905) and her sister, b. Mae (or Mary Lea) Booth (1904) were both born in Waycross, Ware Cty, GA but give up to separate foster homes in about 1908 and later adopted. They were told that their mother had been widowed and could no longer care for them. A Mary Lea Booth, age 7, is listed as a ward of the Georgia Industrial Children's Home in Macon in the 1910 Census -- this may be my grandmother's sister. My grandmother went directly to the family that adopted her, Charles F. and Lillian Black. In any case, I'm trying to locate my Booth relations. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for the name of a orphan home in Allanta,Ga. that my father-in-law was in. The year was 1905 or 1906. He was adopted by an man in South Carolina around that time. he ran away from the man in 1908 because the man only adopted boys to use as field hands. I don't know the man's name but he lived in Aiken,South Carolina. The orphanage burned and all records were lost in the fire. It had to have burned sometime after 1908. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Georgia Orphanges Info Needed

Does anyone know the names of any orphanges located in the northern part of the state? Maybe near Dalton or in Murray County? We have located our mother, Lethia Smith, at @ age 12 living with the Taylor Smith family in Murray County in the 1930's census. We do not know if she is somehow related, but she is not w/them in the 1920 census. She was an orphan and the surname may just be a coincidence. We are having a heck of a time! Also any other useful info about orphans/orphanages to continue our search would be most appreciated. Thanks! --Jamie

LANKFORD/LANGFORD boy & girl in GA orphanage, 1900-1907, taken out/adopted by stepdad Wm LANDRUM

According to my great grandmother, Annie [who passed in 1984], she and her brother Guy were put in a GA orphanage by their mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD/LANGFORD. I believe they lived at the orphanage sometime between late 1900, because Annie was on the June 1900 census for Greene Co, GA, aged 8 mos old w/ her mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD. Guy was not born yet.

When Annie/Guy's father, ________ LANKFORD/LANGFORD [unknown first name] either died or disappeared, their mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD/LANGFORD remarried in Oct 1907 in Oconee Co, GA. Her new husband's name was William Judson "Jett" LANDRUM. He took Annie/Guy out of the orphanage and gave them his name, LANDRUM. They are all together on the 1910 Morgan Co, GA census under the name LANDRUM. So that puts Annie/Guy all being in the orphanage until about late 1900 to Oct 1907.

Names/places/dates are below:

Annie Marie LANKFORD/LANGFORD <======= my line
b 9-24-1899 Lincoln Co, GA

her brother:
Guy Charles LANKFORD/LANGFORD
b 3-23-1902 GA

child w/ Jett/Ellen/Annie/Guy on 1910 Morgan Co, GA census:
Sam LANDRUM
b ABT 1903/1904 GA

The mystery child, Sam LANDRUM is unknown to the family. We don't know if he was Annie/Guy's brother or another kid in the orphanage that Jett took in. Sam was never mentioned at all by my great grandmother.

I don't know of any orphanage names or rosters or anything to look all this info up in. I would so appreciate any help!!
