This is a negative response, in that I am unaware of any orphanage in the 1940s in Cedar Rapids. There was a special census of dependent children in 1933---as far as I know they did not take the names of children, just statistics---and the census lists a Home for the Friendless, no address, under private auspices, for 52 dependent children.
I am aware of a few homes for children which are listed in directories of the 1970s---Boys' Acres (in Bertram, using Cedar Rapids post office), Cedarwood Boys' Group Home, Children's Home of Cedar Rapids, and Maplewood.
The front pages of some city directories contain classified listings of various institutions, etc., and you may be able to find one for the 1940s. I know of one title, but I don't know what years it was published : "The Evening Gazette's Cedar Rapids City and Business Directory."
