St. Joseph's Home of the Friendless-Illinois

My mom's parents died by 1928 and left 10 children ranging from 1-17 years old. 7 of the children were placed at St. Joseph's Home for the Friendless. Could anyone shed light on this orphanage. I think it may have been located in Arlington Heights, Illinois but am not sure why I think this. Her siblings and her have no childhood pictures, never talked about their childhood, their parents, the orphanage etc. Would like to find out all I can about the place.

I am looking for anyone who know anything about this orphanage. I have an address of 409 - 411 South May,Chicago, Il. I am looking for anyone who might have been there or know anyone who was there roughly between 1956 - 1965. I know it was run by the Catholic charities,
Any information would be wonderful. How can I obtain records and if someone was placed there by a parent, how could one find out. The sisters let my husband read a letter that his mother had wrote to him when they closed out his case when he was 18 but they had marked out most of the important information, They would not let him keep the letter nor make a copy of it. It has been 34 years since the date. I am sure it would not be of interest to anyone but my husband and our family. Please help us solve this mystery in his life. God Bless.

Does anyone know anything about this place? I don't believe children were necessarily placed there because they were "feeble minded". I think it was a place to put boys whose parents couldn't or wouldn't care for them. I know of an inmate on the 1930 census who went on to hold a job, marry, and father several children. He was in his teens at the time and his younger siblings were in St Hedwigs and the Illinois Industrial School. Anyone have any information? I believe the parents were not good parents and may have lost the children or placed them there to get rid of them.

Illinois orphanage destroyed in fire?

I am searching for Helena Labott (1874-1966). She was born in Berlin, Wisconsin but I can't find any records of her until she is married. I have been told that she was raised in an orphanage in the Chicago area that has since burnt down along with the records. This is just a family story and may be false, but I was wondering if anyone might now of orphanages in this area that have been destroyed?

My grandfather's elder half-sister was Alma Ingles. She Married Cyrus Grobl 14-May-1904. In the 1920 U.S. Census They lived with their 2 children, Harold & Ethel in Streator, Lasalle County, IL. In 1920 Harold and Ehtel are in the Angel Guardian Orphanage. I haven't found their mother yet in 1920 and it looks as though the father is possibly remarried. Can anyone help me with details or how to find them? Thanks

Lonnie Nunes was placed in Andover Lutheran Home in Andover, IL with siblings Richard & Bonnie by their birth mother, Irene Bernice (Jackson) Nunes in 1948 (approx). Lonnie was approx 4 yrs old in 1948 & had blue eyes, strawberry blond hair, fair skin. There is/was a family resemeblance to his sister & nephew; see pics attached. Many of the Jackson family members look alike. Lonnie's adopted parents gave him a puppy the day he was adopted. Lonnie may still have same first name and may have been raised in the Northern Illinois area. His older brother, Richard, & his baby sister, Bonnie, are looking for him to complete the family!

Would anyone know who would hold the records for Guardian Angel Orphanage? My Grandma was adopted from Guardian Angel Orphanage, Peoria, IL. We think her last name prior to adoption was Huseman because her church records have "Huseman" in quotation marks. Please let me know if you any ideas of the direction I should look in.

Holy Cross Church in Champaign records indicate: LOUISE MARIE "HUSEMAN" WAGNER born 8 March 1924, baptized 30 March 1924 at Guardian Angel Chapel, Peoria IL; confirmed on 22 May 1934 at Holy Cross, married PAUL T. CONNORS on 8 May 1945 at Holy Cross. Her name was changed to MARY LOUISE WAGNER at adoption.

Thanks :)

I am just beginning to search for the records of my mother-in-law Frances Helen Graham who was born in Chicago in 1925 and placed in an orphanage, she is now deceased. She was born to Catholic parents - her mother died soon after her birth and her father worked as a railroad engineer but could not care for her. I do not know how many orphanages there were in Cook County in 1925 and I am wondering what records are available and how I can access the information? Thanks for any help!

I am looking for my great grand mother. No one inthe family knows anything about background, except that she was adopted from that orphanage. We have been wondering for years about her ethnicity. The rumor is that she was Jewish, an everyone in our family who takes after her has very specific characteristic traits that are unlike the rest of our English and Irish ancestors. Any help whould be appreciated.

Thanks, Lisa

Charles Zoodda Mitchell

Charles Zoodda was orphaned in Illinois, possibly southern area (DuQuoin). His name shows up as Charles Zoodda and living with Robert and Francis Mitchell in Six Mile Township, Franklin County. It says Charles is 9 years old and an orphan. All of this is in the 1910 census. In 1930 he is married and still living in the same area with two of his 5 children born. Wife is Tony Moore Mitchell. It is believed that Charles was an orphan in a home called "Childrens Home and Aid Society" maybe "DuQuoin Childrens Home" in 1901. The building may also have been a Seminary School for training teachers. Family would love to know where to get records of Charles Zoodda Mitchell. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Theresa Aberkimm

Name of orphanage in or near Bloomington, IL 1910-1920???

Can someone please help me and tell me the name of any and all orphanages in or near Bloomington, IL during the timeframe of 1910-1920.

My grandfathers 1/2 sister was put into a babyfold during this timeframe.

We are unsure of the childs name because my grt grandmother had remarried down in southern, KY and when she became pregnant the husband deserted her and she died in childbirth. All persons who would of known my grt grandmothers new last name have long since passed and I cannot find any records of her last marriage thus far.

Anyway the child was brought to IL by her 1/2 sister and put in the babyfold. The two 1/2 sisters later were put into contact with each other but the older one died of cancer before they were able to meet. The daughter of the older sibling does not know the name of the child put up for adoption. The only thing she knows is she was adopted by a childless couple and became an old maid school teacher.
It is quite possible since the husband deserted her mother she listed the child under her surname of CUNDIFF.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've never searched for someone put up for adoption so I have no idea how to go about this.....let alone search for someone back in the timeframe we are talking.

Thanks
T
Illinois Orphanage in or near Livingston County, Illinois - Catholic?

It is our understanding that our grandmother and some of her siblings were placed in a catholic orphange some time between the years 1917 through the late 1920's. We don't know the name of it. It was supposed to be a catholic one near Forrest, Illinois in Livingston County, but that could just be a family story. Her name was Elsie Eldridge. Her siblings were Pearl, James, John, Alfred, Otis, and possibly Ann Florence, Ester -- all with the last name Eldridge -- only a few of the children were placed in an orphanage after their father passed away in a train accident in 1917 near Campus, Illinois near where they lived in Forrest, Illinois in Livingston, County

Thanks for your help.

Just found a piece of information. St. Vincent DePaul Infant Home (and Orphanage?) in Chicago, Illinois, was located at 721 North LaSalle Street in Chicago. It was closed in 1972 due to a lack of funding and referrals. The records from St. Vincent now reside with Catholic Charities at that same address, 721 North LaSalle Street in Chicago, Illinois. I found this out while doing some genealogical research for a friend of mine.

children in the Alton orphanage in the 1950's

Hello. I am passing your message along to my husband's cousins in Edgar County, IL. He had two different sets of cousins who were temporary residents there in the 1950's.
I don't have the exact years, but the last names were

Smith, and one of the names would have been Oliver and another would have been Francis. There might have been a sister also. They would have gone to Alton from Edgar County (Hume, IL) when their mother was stricken with tuberculosis. I believe they were there for a few years. They returned home to both parents when mother, Eileen Smith got out of the TB sanitorium. The childrens' father's name was Francis Smith, I believe.

Also in the 1950's would have been 5 or 6 of Larry Mattingly's children, from Paris, IL. also Edgar County. His wife died suddenly of a stroke, and the two youngest children stayed with close relatives in Paris, but the oldest lived in Alton at the orphanage for several years, until Larry could find another wife/mother for his children.

Any information/found photos would be most appreciated!!!! Do you have a mailing address?

Thanks,
Kathy Waller

I am looking for any information on how to find out more information on an orphan asylum my grandfather grew up in. I believe it may have changed names.
According to the 1920 Census, the Chicago Orphan Asylum was in Ward 5 of Chicago proper. My grandfather is listed in that census. However, I need more info on his parents and am hoping records may be found with additional information.

A listing found in reference to asylums of Cook County dated 1905 listed its address as: Chicago Orphan Asylum, 5120 South Park Ave., Chicago, Illinois.

Does anyone happen to know if indeed this Orphanage changed names and what it's new name is OR where information on former business or not for profit institutions may be found? Where are these records usually kept. Any info is greatly appreciated.

The Odd Fellows Orphanage Home closed its doors as a Orphanage in 1987, I remember I went to school with the last young man who lived their. Know one knows where he went to all we know is he ran away and nothing was heard from him since. It continued to opperate as Odd Fellows Day Care Facility until late 1990's early 2000's, It then was bought out and is now being used by the Lincoln Christian Church as a Day Care.

He was taken in by a Renfroe (sp?) family after the fire. So far I have not been able to locate an index of the residents. Does anyone have any info on this Home?

Angel Guardian Orphanage 1920 Chicago Census

I have found some interesting info about three children in the AGO in 1920 Census. From my research and visits, I am almost certain that their father is buried in a cemetary in Chicago, Illinois, in a plot next to my husbands G Grandfathers brother. Maik/Michael Sukitsch/Lukitsch lived in Chicago, and I have yet to figure out the connection/relation of the numerous family members that immigrated together and lived together here in Chicago. The childrens names are Joseph, Hermina, and Lilly Lukitsch. Here in Chicago at that time there were language barriers. Alot of German and Irish speaking. This may explain the difference of the first letter of the last name.
If any one has any info, I'd apperciate it! I may then be able to make more connections with my research.
Thank you,
Christine & Gary

Does anyone know of orphanages which may have existed sometime around the 1850s? I am on a wild goose chase. My gg-grandfather, Byron Moore, immigrated to the US from Ireland sometime around 1850. According to family legend, he was separated from his family during processing and never found them again. He grew up in an orphanage. On his original enlistment papers for the Civil War, he stated he was born in JoDaviess County, IL. I was wondering if maybe that was where he grew up, but once again, I am guessing. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Carla
Hi, I'm trying to find my g,g grandmother and her sibling/s? She was in the home for the friendless in chicago in 1888. Haven't been able to find any records for any of the old orphanages there. I'm hoping someone may have run across this info and know something about it. Thanks
