Looking for information on any orphanages in Memphis, Michigan. Family history strongly states that my great grandfather was placed in an orphanage in Memphis, MI around 1855 by his uncle and older sister after his mother died. Great gramps, Oliver Clifford Smith, always stated that his real last name was Baker, although he was supposedly adopted by a Smith, and so that is what my family has always gone by. Great grandpa gave his mother's maiden name as Louisa B. Cook on his marriage license.
