Is your grandmother still alive? I'm trying to locate information on my grandmother who may have been a resident at this orphanage with her three brothers. Her last name was pronounced "Cottish" but I suspect it was spelled something very different. Grandma died in 1970 and none of us remaining know how her name was spelled. I have a letter describing similar conditions as what your grandmother described. It also tells that her baby brother, who was about 2 years old at the time, was adopted from the orphanage by a young couple but she and her older brothers lived there for quite awhile.

If you have any information on anyone who lived at that home with the name Kauts, Cottis, or any Bohemian derivative of the word Kottisch, I'd love to have it. Her name was Rosa Ann, she was born April 14, 1883 in Creston, Iowa.
