My name is Rose Howard, my brothers and sisters grow up there also. I would like to connect with people who lived at Buckners during the years from 1950's to 1970's.My sisters and I stayed in the Crouch Dorm and our brothers stayed in the McRoy Dorm. I fell like something is missing and hopefully by reconnecting with my past i can find myself and peace again.

I have the old news paper where the children where found on around X-mas because it states that the six children almost missed Sanata due to the family being separated they where found hungry at their home. The home they where taken to first was the Tarrant County Children's Home. and later to the Lena Pope Home. The children where taken prior to her death an before she married Nathan Kennard. I have much of your family history if you want it. I am married to Johnny Dean Richardson, my husband father was Dalphine's brother.

Barbara, I know it has been a long time since you responded to the original post I made about my grandma being raised in an orphanage, but I just found your reply tonight. I had stopped looking for a long time. It was just so frustrating after so many brick walls. I thought it was very interesting when I read about the orphan's home in Monroe, LA. My grandma's first husband was from Ruston, LA., which is just west of Monroe. If you see this please get back in contact with me please. Thanks so much

My father was also in Hope Cottage around 1925 along with his brothers. They were moved to Corsicana State Home and never adopted. I would love to find his father (my grandfather) who I know would not be alive now. My father's name was Walter Jay Morris. His mother died just before he was left at the orphanage. Hope Cottage was run by the KKK previously. My father often talked about the men in their robes. Since my father was born in 1922, he was very young when he stayed there. He died in 1997 but I am still pursuing the hunt. I would love to hear your father's story also. Thank you, Susan

Robbie Lee Pittman

I am trying to find the circumstances surrounding Robbie but have scant information. Believe she was orphaned sometime in the 1920s, later married Leonard Earl Jones of Mills Co., TX and bore one known child named Lovona Fay either in Runnels County, TX or in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto Co., TX. on Oct 27, 1949. Cannot find any further documentation of marriage/divorce/death/birth.

Update; Robbie Lee may have been a Nelson, age 41/2 in a 1930 Texas Census, daughter of Lou Ella Nelson, aged 16 in 1930, daughter (possibly from an earlier marriage) of Marion Burke Lawson and Ida Isabelle Strange from the Alabama area. Anyone out there with possible ties to them?

I have information on your Grandmother. My aunt remembers her well as a child "aunt Doci" would come visit. I have information on her Father and mother. Wilford Gassiott Married twice, his first wife was the mother of my ancestor Myrtie Gassiott. His second marriage produced 3 more children. I believe Myrtie and his brothers raised the children but didn't know that she was an orphan. Wilfords will provided for his younger children. Please contact me for more information. Wilford and his 3 brothers fought in the civil war and his father was Francis (Joseph Joshua) Gassiot.

I am interested in any information I can find. I am researching a family member and it shows him and his parents address as Waco Ward 1, McLennan Tx. Shows the father in the construction trade. I have no idea if he was adopted or an orphan, but am curious as to why the parents would be listed there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My dad and his siblings were placed in an orphanage in Texas. I believe it was around 1954. Roscoe (went by Rocky) was born in Dec 1941. I am mostly curious about which orphanage he was in and whether he was placed before or after his mother Hazel's death in 1954. I was told the orphanage was in Dallas? But all the family lived in Tarrant County and Coleman County. So how would I go about finding which orphanage and what time frame? Any help would be hugely appreciated as the curiosity is killing me!

I’m trying to locate information about an uncle, Ray White, whom I’ve been told died in Buckner’s Orphanage in 1931 or 1932. He would have been just a few months old as I have been informed.
At the time of Ray’s death, my Mother and four of her siblings where being cared for at home.

Any information provided will be greatly appreciated.

COR

My mother was born in Ft Worth, TX at the Volunteers of America Maternity Home. There was also another home, Edna Gladney Home for Unwed Mothers, which was in the same area.

It is difficult getting records from that time though we were able to send the info to Austin and recieve back some info. From there, my mother went to the court where the papers were filed and she was able to get them opened up.

Good luck.

I've been tasked with locating a possible orphanage or children's home in Houston. It is supposed to be located at W Dallas and Shepherd Drive and working as of the 1950s. However, I'm not sure of the name.
The building was moved to Albany St and it became a hotel.
The building is noted for its arches and a stone kitchen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

However, even though the records I am looking for are 107 yrs old, they have a death grip on any documentation concerning their residents. Thank you for the response...much appreciated.

The mother's name was Eloise Brooks but we don't know her married name (or even if she was married), but we believe her two children were placed in Buckner's in either the 1930's or 1940's after her death.
I hope by now you have found the info you need. In case you haven't, I would suggest you check Census records. I found my grandmother listed as an "inmate" at Buckner's in the 1910 Census. When I called Buckner's, they provided me with a copy of the application for admitance for her and two or her siblings, which provided a wealth of information. One caveat, she was listed under a nickname, rather than her correct given name.

Good luck. Pat

Just in case you havent, I wanted to let you know that there are books about it--one that might be of special interest to you is "The Orphan Chronicles." I got my copy on Amazon. I visited Buckner's recently and found a room with photos and memorabilia that might also be of interest to you. You can get the address and phone number on line.

Pat

Another that I was in is called corsicana State Home in Corsicana Texas. Buckner might even have a Mesquite address but I'm not sure. You should find it by the name tho. Also, when you contact them I would ask if they are aware of other names of orphanages because I think I was in another and don't know the name of it.
During the time period you are talking about the Buckner's Orphanage would have been the major place in the Dallas area. It is located on the East edge of Dallas, almost in Mesquite. Now called Buckner Children and Family Services its address is 5200 South Buckner Blvd - Dallas 75227. They have lots of records and an active alumni association. The Mesquite Historical and Genealogical Association has published a lot of the Buckner records in various issues of their bulletin. The Mesquite Public Library might be able to help you with that information. Take care - Emma

I was told that it was a Buckner's Orphanage but in my research it was The Baptist Childrens Home in Monroe, Louisiana. If you think this might help you let me know and I'll dig through my notes and get the address to that orphanage for you.

Can someone please tell me where I might find the names of orphanages in the Dallas County area , operating around 1890-1920? My Grandmother, Viola Mae KIRBY, was born in Dallas May 1897. Was said to have been raised in an orphanage. One source lead me to believe that the orphanage could have been in Loisianna, but my searches there have been in vain. I think now, that I need to look into the possiblity that the orphanage may have been in Dallas, where she was born. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Robbie

Both my grandparents on my father (Frank Junius Morris, Sr.)were supposed to have been residents at Buckner's Orphanage probably in the late 1800's or early 1990's since my father was born in 1907. Nannie Mae Mitchell and Thomas Jefferson Morris supposedly met there and eventually married. I can find no record in census reports of them being there. I'm working on the geneology of the Morris's and would appreciate any information or suggestions. Nannie also had a brother named George who was also a resident. I have no information on the name of Nannie & George's family. Thomas Jefferson Morris's father was named James Morris
