Laura is my great grandmother and Iam stuck since I found the 1900 census for her.Its says on that census that Laura thinks she was born around 1862 in New York and that she was in the New York Foundling Asylum. It also goes on to say she did not know her parents. What I do know is very little,Laura travels to Montana somewhere between 1870 and 1885 and meets my great grandfather and marries him and has 1 daughter..Jessie May Robeson in 1893.Laura did not travel alone from what her daughter says in an interview by Jim Annin and a childhood friend and an author.Jim Annin wrote a book about the Montana early pioneers and their families.Laura traveled with a woman named Mary J Clark who later marries Malcolm M McDonald (yes of the McDonald Basin in Montana).Mary's family members tell me Mary came to Montana before 1870.My problem is I do not have an exact date of birth on Laura and I may even be wrong on her death date.I do know that when my grandma Jessie needed to get a birth certificate for reasons Iam unsure,in the early 1960's,Jessie wrote to someone in Kankakee,Illinois for that info because Laura's people lived there.I do not know who they were.My family is not close and Iam constantly getting wrong info from them so I am unable to rely on their info being correct.I was told by a member here that Laura's middle name ELLSWORTH could be rememberence name because the 1st civil war soldier to die in battle was a man named Ellsworth.Does anyone know what I should try next??I have searched everywhere but have come up with nothing. It has been suggested that maybe Mary J Clark is the mother of could explain the huge age difference between the 2 ladies??And back then if you had a child out of wedlock it wasn't something you wanted everyone to know.Iam grasping at straws but I have yet to have 1 solid lead come.A person just doesn't appear out of no where like my great Gran did.The only records I can find are her 1900 census (under Dane Rolenson Fishtail,Stillwater,Montana) and that Laura is buried in Nye Cemetery in Nye Montana a very short way from where she and my great grandfather lived.I do not exact birth or death dates.
