I have never heard of this before and have been around the bend more than once. I have heard of many early settler societies but I suspect this one allows for some one that can trace their roots back to the mid 1800s. I am just curious.

Thanks

Conquistadore ancestor?

Jeronimo Bacarel could have been my distant relative. I found his name by searching through
Peter Boy-Bowman's two volumes of the Indice Geobiografico de Cuarenta mil Pobladores Espanoles de America en el Siglio XVI.
17,000 names of soldiers and colonists are listed, not only Spanish conquistadors, but Italians, French, Dutch, German, Scot, Portuguese, Greek and some Irish, who served in Spanish forces. It is written entirely in Spanish.

From this source I learned that Jeronimo Bacarel was from Palermo, Sicily and arrived in Peru in 1535. I have searched the internet for more information as to his life in the New World, but have uncovered nothing. So I don't know if he was a conquistador, or colonist, scoundrel or settler.

Where should my next search begin?
It has been one week since our conference and I am still feeling great about the overall program. I would like to hear from any of you who has a pioneer program and how do you present the certificates. Do you do anything special? Do you give only certificates or do you present anything else? Do you have a quest speaker and do you present the certificates before or after the speaker? Is the occasion formal (banquet) or informal (lunch or annual meeting?)Do you present awards more than once a year? Do you just mail the awards? Any comments or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
Pam

Illinois Prairie Pioneer Certificates

The Illinois State Genealogical Society has offered Priaire Pioneer Certificates for a number of years. There are three levels: Prestatehood, statehood to 1850, and 1850 to 1880. You can contact the ISGS for details. There are a number of books available with the summaries of the certificates. I just found this message board after reading the "daily news". I haven't had a chance to look at Illinois, KY, and other states. If you haven't posted a message in each of those sites about the pioneer certificates, I hope you will. Thanks for adding this message board. I've already added it to my favorites.
