It would go down through the eldest son, to his eldest son, to his eldest son, ad infinitum. Only if that line fails would it go back up to the younger son and then down through his eldest son and so on.
If the main line failed in (let us say) the 3rd generation and the cadet line is also in the 3rd generation (and has had a Paul in the 2nd and 1st generations, but are now dead), the intermediates are not counted.
