Hi Jon,

Many thanks for posting the interesting account and photos of the Doukhobor Community in Trail from the early 1900's onward.

You continue to "educate/enligten" from afar via your website: www.doukhobor.org ...
as I dare say probably not many current generations....even those living locally....are aware that Trail had been such an "important center of Doukhobor activity in the 1920's and 1930's.

Corinne

Doukhobor Cemetery Transcription Project

Doukhobor Cemetery Transcription Project

The Doukhobor Cemetery Transcription Project is a heritage project conceived in 2001 to identify, transcribe and make available on-line all Doukhobor cemeteries in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. This information includes a list of all known internments, their birth and death dates; the location of the cemetery; its history and physical layout; as well as directions to the site.

Over the past seven years, dozens of volunteers from across Western Canada have participated in this important undertaking, contributing substantial time, effort and resources to interviewing local residents, reviewing historic records, conducting fieldwork at remote locations and organizing and compiling research results. A number of local and provincial genealogical societies have also lent their support. As a result of this groundbreaking project, a centralized inventory of 108 Doukhobor cemeteries has been created and made available online for research and general enquiry purposes.

In Saskatchewan, Doukhobor cemeteries have been identified in the following locations: Arran (Bogomdannoye, Khlebodarnoye, Lebedevo, Lyubimirnoye (2 cemeteries), Mikhailovka, Pokrovskoye, Semenovka, Tikhomirnoye and Vosneseniye); Blaine Lake (Haralowka, Old Haralowka, Old Spasovka, Old Terpeniye, Old Pozirayevka, Ospenia, Pazaraevka/Balmoral, Petrofka, Riverhill/Spasovka, Slavanka, Terpeniye/Brookhill and Trinity/Troitskoye); Borden (Tambovka); Buchanan (Blagosklonnoye, Kalmakovo, Kirilovka, Moiseyevo, Novo-Goreloye, Novo-Troitskoye, Old Goreloye and Ootishenia); Canora (Besednoye, Blagoveshcheniye, Meadowdale and Novoye); Hyas (Vozvysheniye); Kamsack (Alexeyevka, Efremovka, Lyubovnoye, Old Efremovka, Petrovka, Truzhdeniye and Voskreseniye); Kylemore (God’s Blessing); Langham (Bogdanovka/Cee Pee, Pakrowka/Henrietta and Kirilovka); Mikado (Chursinoff, Rodionovka and Sovetnoye); Pelly (Arkhangel’skoye, Gromovoye, Osvobozhdeniye, Peaceful Cove and Perekhodnoye); Runnymede (Tambovka, Trudolyubovoye and Vossianiye); Sheho (Blagodatnoye); Togo (Nikolayevka, Old Kamenka and Old Terpeniye); Veregin (Blagodarnoye, Kapustino, Khutor, Nadezhda, Novo-Pokrovka, Otradnoye, Prokuratovo, Slavnoye, Terpeniye, Tolstoy, Smireniye, Spasovka, Ubezhdeniye, Verigino, Vernoye); Watson (Daphne Doukhobor); and Whitebeech (Troitskoye and Uspeniye).

The following Doukhobor cemeteries have been identified in Alberta: Arrowwood (Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood); Lundbreck (United Doukhobors of Alberta); and Queenstown (Krasiviya Dolina).

In British Columbia, Doukhobor cemeteries have been identified in the following locations: Castlegar (Brilliant, Champion Creek/Blagodatnoye, Ootischenia, Verigin’s Memorial Park); Gilpin (2 cemeteries); Glade (Plodorodnoye); Grand Forks (Bozhiya Dolina, Outlook/London, Sleepy Hollow/Ubezhishche, USCC/Sion); Hilliers (Union of Christ); Hills; Krestova; Pass Creek (Lugovoye); Perry Siding (Persikovoye); Porto Rico; Salmo (Salmo Doukhobor/Boulder); Shoreacres (Prekrasnoye); Slocan Park (Valleyview); Thrums; and Winlaw.

With the exception of a small handful of burial sites where research work is still underway, all of these cemeteries have been transcribed and are available online on the Doukhobor Genealogy Website at www.doukhobor.org/Cemetery-Index.htm.

The Doukhobor Cemetery Transcription Project is a work-in-progress. Currently photographs of each headstone in these cemeteries are being taken to preserve the identity of the headstone as some are becoming badly eroded with time. As well, the list of internments in these cemeteries is periodically updated with new burials and, as information becomes available, with existing, unmarked burials. Finally, Doukhobor interments in municipal cemeteries will also be identified and transcribed.

Web visitors are encouraged to submit any names, dates, corrections or clarifications regarding Doukhobor interments, wherever they are located, as it is vitally important that this historic information be preserved for present and future generations.

For general inquiries about the Doukhobor Cemetery Transcription Project or specific inquiries about Saskatchewan or Alberta cemeteries, please contact Jonathan J. Kalmakoff at jon.kalmakoff@accesscomm.ca. For specific inquiries about British Columbia cemeteries, please contact Lawrna Myers at lsmyers@telus.net.

From the Castlegar News(Aug.21,2008) In Memory of Joh J. Polonikoff born Feb.12,1922 and died Aug.22,2007. On Passing, Unto this earth we come to seek the pleasures and the pain which is our lot. To laugh, to cry, to talk and think, To share the will of all mankind. So quickly does time pass... Our hopes and dreams sometimes unfilled and yet we live, with sense and purpose unknown to all but God, who in His wisdom Made us what we are. To leave behind, not fame or fortune but the thought, that just perhaps, we brought the goodness out in those we love. Sadly missed, but not forgotten. We little knew that morning, that God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. In broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide: And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, But neither time now reason, will change the way we feel. We think of you in silence, no eyes can see us weep. But still within our aching hearts, your meomory we keep. We love you and miss you very much MOM & DAD

1916 Census of Western Canadian Provinces Available on Microfilm

1916 Census of Western Canadian Provinces Available on Microfilm

September 28, 2008

The 1916 Census of the Western Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta) is now available on microfilm at Library and Archives Canada.

The special census of the Western Provinces was conducted in 1916 by the federal government, as it had previously done in 1906, to track the high rates of population growth in western Canada. This endeavor continued every 10 years to 1956.

The census recorded population statistics (Schedule No. 1) by name, age, sex, origin, religion, birthplace, occupation, year of immigration, citizenship, language spoken, literacy and military service and is considered the most valuable census information for genealogical purposes. The census also contains agricltural property statistics (Schedule No. 2).

This census is only available on microfilm. Copies of the microfilm reels (reels T-21925 to T-21956) are available in the Microfilm Consultation Room and at the reference desk in the Canadian Genealogy Centre of Library and Archives Canada. Copies of the microfilm reels are also available at many archives, libraries and genealogical societies across the provinces.

A finding aid is available at the Canadian Genealogy Centre webpage (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.008-e.h...). The finding aid lists microfilm reels numbers corresponding to specific geographical areas covered by the 1916 census. Once you have identified the number of the microfilm that you need, it can be ordered from Library and Archives Canada using their online inter-library loan form.

A more detailed finding aid of Doukhobors in the 1916 census is planned in conjunction with the Doukhobor Genealogy Website (http://www.doukhobor.org/) and will be available online within several months.

The 1916 is not yet available online at the Canadian Genealogy Centre website; however, digitization and indexing are being undertaken as part of an agreement Ancestry.com. It is anticipated that it will be digitized and available online by June of 2009.

For more information about census records held at Library and Archives Canada on the Canadian Genealogy Centre webpages (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911-e.html).
Obit - VARABIOFF Michael
Michael (Mike) Varabioff
March 24,1935 - August 30,2008
A Gentle Man
A caring man, so good and kind
Few folks on earth like him we find
For all of us, he did his best
May God grant him eternal rest.
His life was full of thoughtful deeds
And helping hands in times of need
A pleasant smile, a patient heart
A gentle man who did his part.

Michael (Mike) Varabioff was born March 24, 1935 in Verigin, Saskatchewan to Nick and Laura (Kazakoff) Varabioff. They returned to Grand Forks, B.C. shortly afterwards. Michael's mother passed away when he was four years old. He continued to live with his loving Kazakoff grandparents and extended family.
He attended public school in Grand Forks and, as a teenager, had many jobs to help him stay in school. He obtained employment at the Grand Forks Co-op, thus launching
his career in retail. He moved to Nelson to join the Sirnpson-Sears staff there; then, settled in Castlegar, where he managed the Castlegar Sears store. Eventually, after managing the Trail Sears store, he took an early retirement at age 56.
While still in Grand Forks, he met Kate Tomilin, whom
he married in 1959. Together they raised a family of three children; sons Michael and Jon and daughter Eva. Seven grandchildren blessed their lives. Kates parents Jack and Helen were a loving influence on the Varabioff family.
Michael enjoyed singing in choirs and fellowship with members. He loved to sing and play his guitar. His musical talents inspired his children to sing, play; and pursue musical studies. He especially loved woodworking and Deda could fix anything! He also spent rime outdoors. Helping and spending time with family and friends brought him great happiness.
Mike became ill in August 2007 and, with family close by, passed away August 30, 2008 at the age of 73. Services were held at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel, and burial was at Park Memorial Cemetery. Left with broken hearts are his wife Kate Varabioff; son Michael (and wife Maura) Varabioff; sonJon Varabioff; daughter Eva (and husband Tony) Cortens: grandchildren Sophie, Nicholas and Natasha Varabioff; grandchildren Olivia, Daniel, Timothy and Christopher Cor tens; brothers Norman, Edward and Peter, sister Vera and mother Mary Varabioff; nieces, cousins and friends. Dear Meesha, you will always be loved and missed. We are grateful for your devotion, love and care, and for making all our lives better. May God bless and keep you and grant you Eternal Peace in His Heavenly Kingdom.
THANK YOU family and friends for your presence, prayers, hymns and condolences during this sad and painful time. THANK YOU for the food, flowers, cards, e-rnails, phone calls, visits, child care, hospital visits, donations and shoulders on which to shed our tears. THANK YOU Fred Makortoff for officiating and guiding us through the service; speakers Peter Varabioff, Jon Varabioff, Elmer Verigin and Koozma Gorkoff pall bearers; Tri-Choir for their powerful tribute to Mike. THANK YOU to our children for the thoughtful slide presentation and moving renditions of'His Eye is on the Sparrow" and 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". We love you all.
Monetary donations to Iskra and Cancer Society gratefully accepted.

Trail Rossland News - Thursday September 18, 2008

HOLOBOFF of Sask & BC

My father was Frederick Bennett Holoboff. His parents were Alexe(ei) Holoboff and Masha “Mary” Petroff (second marriage for each). Both were born in Russia and emigrated with the Dukhobors ca. 1899, settling at or near Verigin, Saskatchewan.

Grandfather Alex Holoboff was married 1st to Vasuna (Lesunia?) Perepolkin (in Russia or Canada???) and had the following children: Alex Holoboff (m. Polly Kabatoff), Sam Holoboff (m. Miriam Streeter), Helen “Honey” Holoboff (m. Simeon Peabody Owens), Mike Holoboff (m. Mary Cherkasoff), Alice Holoboff (m. Charles Schram).

Grandmother Mary Petroff was married 1st to Unknown Shkuratoff and had the following children: Molly Shkuratoff (m. Paul Reibin) and Peggy Shkuratoff (m. Mike Gizowski).

Alex Holoboff and Mary Petroff then had the following children: Russell Alexander Holoboff (m. Bess Woods), Mary Holoboff (m. Maurice Yuzwa), Frederick Bennett Holoboff (m. Peggy-Rae Almond).

Alex Holoboff’s mother was possibly named Matrusha Bloodoff. Alex had a brother named Vasah or Vasilya/Vasiya (aka Bill) who married Fenia/Fenya Kazakoff and had children Lesunia Holoboff (m. Pete Faminoff), Peter Holoboff, John Holoboff, and Nick Holoboff (m. Mary ____).

Any connections? Also, there was an Anastasia Holoboff who was Peter Verigin's maid and partner. How is she related to my Holoboff line?

Would like to someday know: 1) where my Holoboffs came from in Russia, 2) my Petroff lineage, 3) who was my grandmother’s 1st husband, the unknown Mr. Shkuratoff, and 4) anything at all about my Russian/Dukhobor roots.

You may also respond directly to my email address: lc-lynn@pacbell.net

THANKS!

He was eighty-seven years old. He was born in Brandon, Manitoba, and lived in Alberta, but spent most of his life in British Columbia.

John was a man of all trades, working in the orchard, mining, lumber and construction industries. His projects included highways
throughout BC and the Mica and Revelstoke dams.

John enjoyed gardening, dancing, fishing, country music, cards, camping and traveling. Together with his parmer, Nora, they traveled by motorhome throughout Canada and were
snowbirds spending many winters in southern California. They always enjoyed the company of many mends wherever they went. Other travel destinations included Mexico, Cuba, Alaska and Hawaii. He loved all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visited them frequently and when he couldn't these last years, they came to see him.

Talarico Place in Castlegar has been home for the last few years. John is survived by his loving' partner of the last 36 years, Nora Makaroff, her daughter, Elaine Bothwick and husband Al; grandchildren Shawna Hegan, Chloe Steene and husband Brandon and Jamie Bothwick and grandchildren, Galina Hegan and Violet Steene. The families also wish to thank the singers, the cooks, the gravediggers and the pallbearers. A special thanks to Mike and Frances Kanigan for their kind support. Funeral arrangements were provided by Bill Clark of Personal Alternative Funeral Services.

The families would like to express their thanks to the many doctors in the region who looked after John over the years and the staff at Talarico Place. A special thanks to Penny Hurd and Bill Yofonoff, his nephew, for their kindness in being there for Dad. Lastly, the families would like to thank the many people who lent their comfort in this time of grief with their phone calls, visits, cards and flowers.

John will be forever remembered.

Castlegar News - September 11, 2008

Roll Call 2008

In 2002 I posted a Roll Call for people actively researching their Doukhobor family lines. Now six years later, at the start of 2008, it would be good to do this again!

With over 2,890 postings on the Doukhobor Message Board, many messages are slowly being "buried" in the list. A Roll Call would provide a fresh begining by letting all listers know which family lines we are each researching. Perhaps if we all do this, we can connect when we otherwise might not and help each other out in our research!

I am a direct descendant of the following lines and am researching them extensively: Barchukoff, Bonderoff, Chernoff, Cheveldayoff, Chursinoff, Demosky, Demoskoff, Ivin, Kalmakoff, Kolesnikoff, Konkin, Konusoff, Lazaroff, Nemakhoff, Novokshonoff, Parfenkoff, Planidin, Popoff, Remezoff, Sherstobitoff, Shukin, Vereshchagin.

Although not a direct descendant, I am also extensively researching the following collateral lines: Androsoff, Barabanoff, Dergousoff, Fedosoff, Hancheroff, Kaboroff, Kotelnikoff, Krukoff, Lapshinoff, Malikoff, Morozoff, Nemanikin, Ostoforoff, Pereverzeff, Plaxin, Rebalkin, Samorodin, Shiloff, Shishkin, Stupnikoff, Sukocheff, Trofimenkoff, Trubetskoff, Vanjoff, Verigin, Zbitnoff.

In addition to these main lines, I have a large number of other Doukhobor family lines in my personal research files.

I look forward to hearing from others who answer this 2008 Roll Call. Happy New Year!

How to change the USCC to attract membership?

Restructuring Committee Formed on the Future of the USCC
http://www.spirit-wrestlers.com/excerpts/Hodge_Podge.html#20...

1. With increasing urbanization, almost one-third of the membership resides outside the 'home base' regions of the Castlegar/Grand Forks areas. As a result, it is now difficult to carry out Community responsibilities.

2. Older members are passing on and not as many younger ones are coming on board.

3. Virtually every Doukhobor family is now affected by intermarriage with non-Doukhobors, with a perceived drift away from Doukhobor identity.

4. There are thousands of Doukhobors living in various regions of Western Canada. 'What ideas do you have for encouraging them to become active members of a restructured USCC organization?'
News Article: Family Digs Cucumbers Through the Generations

Family Digs Cucumbers Through the Generations

Bob Florence, The StarPhoenix
Published: Tuesday, September 02, 2008

In the garden in their backyard, Lloyd and Sharon Lahti grow beets and beans and peas and potatoes. They're already digging into their second planting of carrots this year, plus their third crop of spinach.

"I don't grow tomatoes," says Lloyd, 64. "I can't for some reason; they just won't grow for me. Same with the corn."

Along their back fence grows a row of sunflowers, now round in the face and long in the legs.

"No self-respecting Doukhobor would be without sunflowers," Lloyd says. "I remember as a kid everyone getting together at my grandfather's on Sunday nights. We'd sit around in the kitchen with friends, spitting sunflower seeds on the bare floor and singing songs. Vecherooshki, we called it."

Lloyd's roots are in the old country. His great-grandmother was a Russian Doukhobor. Persecuted because of her pacifist religious beliefs, she left Russia and came to Canada, settling with a colony in the Blaine Lake area in 1899.

She was big into gardening. It's a passion that has been passed down in the family for years, each generation not only inheriting her green thumb, but also serving as guardians of her prized cucumbers.

This cucumber is also a Russian refugee, or so the family legend goes. They say it grew in the rich Georgian soil near the Black Sea. They say when the Doukhobors packed up and cleared out, they took with them a pouch of seeds from this cucumber, a variety which grows short, but sweet.

First grown in Blaine Lake at the turn of the 20th century, the cucumber is still in the family, dutifully planted by one member of the family or another for more than 100 years.

"Best cucumber ever," says Lloyd, the fourth-generation keeper of the cukes. "Anyone who has one says the same thing. They can't believe the taste."

Lloyd is sitting in the shade in his back yard on a hot afternoon, wearing old jeans and rubber boots. He has his shirt off; his skin tanned a caramel brown.

When Sharon arrives with plate of sliced cucumber, you can smell it right away; a garden freshness that fills the air.

"I eat 20 to 25 of them a day," Lloyd says. "They're juicy, not bitter, have a nice smooth skin."

He talks of these cucumbers with relish.

"I used to hate gardening," he says. "The rest of the neighbour kids would be over at Johnny's Inn for soft drinks and there I was in mother's garden, pulling the portulaca."

Lloyd went on to attend Aden Bowman Collegiate and studied commerce at the University of Saskatchewan. He got a job with Sears down east, working as a buyer in the toy department, but after awhile grew weary of the daily 51-kilometre commute between Burlington and Toronto. Returning to Saskatchewan, he and Sharon got into the hotel business in Radisson, Asquith, Yorkton and Vanscoy.

Lloyd now lives in the house in Saskatoon where he was raised. His father built this house in 1958. His mother planted in this garden.

A cucumber patch occupies the biggest part of Lloyd and Sharon's garden. They planted 41/2 rows of cucumbers this year.

"We planted on May 16 and did the first picking July 29," Sharon says, reading from the log book where Lloyd has it all written down, accountant style.

From each season's crop they set aside 15 to 20 cucumbers to provide seeds for the next year. They start the plants indoors in early spring, then by mid-May they get digging. Lloyd hoes the rows, Sharon does the planting. To avoid damaging the sprouts, Sharon plants the young cucumbers with tweezers.

Later, when the cucumbers start to flower, Sharon pollinates each one by hand.

Lloyd gives them a good soaking every second day.

"They're my pride and joy," he says. "Hey, it's not only me. Mom, the grandkids, they're always asking 'How are the cukes doing?'

"Funny, nobody ever seems to ask about the spuds."

Summer is ending. Soon, Lloyd and Sharon will be on their way south to Las Vegas, their home in the off-season.

"For six months I have the biggest case of withdrawal," Lloyd says. "I can't wait until spring."

Deep in December, anticipation begins for the next growing season. Oh, for another taste of cucumber. So crisp. So cool.

"When we were down there a couple of winters ago I got to thinking: 'What if the house back home catches fire? What'll happen to the seeds? You can't get these in at a garden store. If I lose them, they're gone.' I was sick thinking about it.

"So you know what I did?"

Lloyd leans in close, sharing a secret.

"I keep the seeds in my safe deposit box now."
*Obit. - KANIGAN, Nick Harry

Biography of Nick Harry Kanigan

Nick Harry Kanigan was born on October 19, 1915 to Annie and Harry Kanigan in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Nick lived in Kylemore, Saskatchewan with his brothers Fred, Peter, and his sister Gertie. Nick was a great grandson to Romasha Kanigan.

As a child Nick went to school where he completed grade 4. He grew up on a farm with sheep, cows, horses and chickens and learned to care for the animals and helped on the farm at an early age. By the age of 8, he was plowing the land.

In 1932, at the age of 17, Nick first laid eyes on Dora Popoff. Two years later, Nick formally met Dora at a casual gathering. They courted for 3 years and got married on April 25, 1937. Soon afterwards, they moved to British Columbia where they settled on a farm in Appledale. Together Nick and Dora lovingly raised four children: Laura, Florence, Nicky, and Ellie.

Nick's early working career consisted of delivering railroad ties, transporting firewood, food and supplies to the interned Japanese people when they came into the Slocan area, and delivering dairy products for the Rossland Dairy farm. Nick also worked for his dad (Harry Kanigan's and Sons) for a short period of time. In 1945, Nick received his high pressure welding ticket. Nick was hard working and very passionate about his welding. In the early 1950's Nick went to work for Cady which later became Burns Lumber Company in Passmore (which then became Slocan Forest Products) as a heavy-duty mechanic. In 1953, Nick took a leave of absence from Burns Lumber at which time Nick and Dora lived for a short time in Penticton where Nick worked as a mechanic and Dora worked in the orchards. Upon returning to the Slocan Valley, Nick built his own mechanic shop and had a gas pump and service station just below their home in Appledale. Nick then returned to work at Burns Lumber/Slocan Forest. He would put in a full day at Slocan Forest and then come home and spend many hours working in his mechanic shop. Nick retired from Slocan Forest Products at the age of 68.

Over the years, Nick and Dora had the opportunity to do some traveling with their family. They went to California, Mexico, Portland and Saskatchewan. There were many wonderful family memories from these trips. Nick also had the opportunity to travel to Russia and South America in the 1950's.

Nick first became a member of the USCC in 1938. He was involved in the inception of the Union of Youth Council created by Peter P. "Chistiakov" Verigin. Nick was also an active member of the Human Rights and Social Justice Working Group. Nick's involvement in the community was always evident through his life. Nick was also instrumental in the construction of the Appledale Hall in the 1980's.

Nick had strong beliefs in the words and ideals of the Doukhobor leaders and he was always concerned on the fate of the Doukhobor people. He strived to live his life according to Doukhobor principles and worked towards teaching his children and grandchildren to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He tried to instill, through living by example, the value of prayer through song, the importance of pacifism and living a simple non-materialistic life. Nothng pleased Nick more than to have family and friends join together in song.

In 1998, Nick and Dora decided to move closer to South Slocan to be closer to the services and care they required. In January 2001, his wife Dora passed away suddenly. Nick continued to live on his own in their home until March 2008 when Nick experienced health problems and moved to Talarico Place in Castlegar. There he adjusted well to the change in his lifestyle. He made new friends, visited with old friends, and enjoyed his short walks and the singing sessions with his sister Gertie.

On Saturday July 19, 2008 Nick suffered a stroke and was transferred to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital where he passed away peacefully on July 25, 2008 at the age of 92. He is survived by his 4 children: daughter Laura Katelnikoff of South Slocan, daughter Florence and husband Bill Kinakin of Glade, son Nick Kanigan and wife Margaret of Winlaw, daughter Ellie and husband Michael Davidoff of Ootischenia; eleven grandchildren: Warren, Lloyd, Dan, Stesha and partner Garett, Jake and partner Jen, Marla and husband Cary, Karyn and husband Robert, Nikki and husband Dave, Colleen and husband Daniel, Mark and wife Tammy, Jonathan and friend Tasha, nine great-grandchildren: Nathan, Jared, Brandan, Megan, Rosa, Dharia, Peter, Simon, and Matthew; sister Gertie Konkin, brother Peter Kanigan, brother-in-law Alex and wife Mary Popoff of Kelowna, sister-in-law Mary Popoff from Robson and many nieces and nephews.

Nick was predeceased by his brother Fred in 1943, his Dad Harry in 1953, his mother Anne in 1972, sister-in-law Mabel in 1977, his wife Dora in 2001, his brother-in-law Fred in 2004, his son-in-law Walter in 2006, and his brother-in-law Andy in 2006.

Funeral services for Nick were held on July 28, 2008 at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel and on July 29, 2008 at the Appledale Hall with interment at the Perry Siding Community Cemetery.

On behalf of the family we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Kirstin and Dr. Malpass, Dr. Merritt, Dr. Trenholm, Dr. Laroche and Dr. Kozak, staff at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital and all the staff at Talarico Place for the care Nick received. We would also like to thank the Castlegar Funeral Chapel for their assistance, the psalm singers, the Appledale Ladies for cooking a wonderful meal, the gravediggers for preparing Nick's final resting place and those who called or expressed their condolences to the family after his passing.

Nick will be sadly missed by all of us and his memory
will remain strong with us forever.

May God embrace Nick in his light and grant him eternal peace.

*Obituary from Castlegar News, August 21, 2008

*Obit. - KABATOFF, Anna

Anna Kabatoff
July 24, 1931- July 19, 2008

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Anna Kabatoff, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the age of 76 years.

Anna was born to parents Peter Andreevich and Doris Lazeroff on July 24, 1931 in the village of Christovoye, in Grand Forks, BC. On October 14, 1949, she married Pete Kabatoff and they spent most of their years together living in Ootischenia, where they raised two sons and one daughter.

Anna always had plenty of food for her family and friends and a warm smile to greet them. She enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. Anna was actively involved in the community's cooking group and donated her time and craftsmanship whenever possible. Although without formal education as a seamstress, Anna was highly adept at reading patterns and making her own designs. Several "hope chests" contain Anna's treasures, crocheted doilies, tablecloths and her trademark doukhobour shawls. Anna selflessly devoted her whole life to caring for her family. She always tried to fill the needs and desires of others, rarely considering herself. She was always happy to entertain people and ensure that nobody ever left hungry! Anna loved life and loved to laugh. She always enjoyed a good joke and funny story and has left us the memory of her hearty laugh.

Anna and Pete travelled to many foreign countries, including Russia, Cuba, Mexico and the United States, as well she and her two sisters travelled to Hawaii to soak up the sun.

Anna was blessed to have lived long enough to see all eight of her beloved grandchildren successfully graduate from high school, with the last two graduating one month ago.

She was very much a big part of her grandchildren's lives, from overnight stays to help along the way, grandma was always there.

Anna leaves behind to mourn her passing her loving husband of 59 years, Pete, sons Walter (Chris) and their children Clayton, Aleea and Jesse of Ootischenia, and Jack and his children Jennilee, Amanda, Ashley and Cody of Ootischenia, daughter Verna (Dan) Shlakoff and their son Tony of Crescent Valley and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Brilliant Cultural Centre on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 followed by the interment at the Ootischenia Cemetery.

Arrangements were in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

The family of Anna Kabatoff would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for their love and support during this extremely difficult time. A special "thank you" to the attendants of the BC Ambulance Service, the doctors and emergency staff at Castlegar Health Centre. Bill Strilaeff and the staff at Castlegar Funeral Chapel for their care and concern and to Peter Zaytsoff for conducting the funeral service.

Anna, we'll remember you always for your guidance, hospitality and love that you have bestowed on us throughout the years. You will be dearly missed by us all.

MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND MAY THE LORD KEEP YOU SAFE IN HIS ARMS AND GRANT YOU ETERNAL PEACE IN HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM.

*Obituary from Castlegar News August 14, 2008

I am trying (mostly in vain) to locate my birth family. I was given up for adoption by my birth mother in April 1962 and would very much like to fill in my side of my family tree - I already have my adopted parents family tree. I am not looking for personal contact, just some blanks to be filled in. If this applies to someone you know within the Doukhobor community, please pass this on. Thank you

Library and Archives Canada and Doukhobor Genealogy Website Announce Strategic Partnership

For Immediate Release – July 5, 2008

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and Jonathan J. Kalmakoff, creator of the Doukhobor Genealogy Website, the largest Doukhobor family history website, announced today a strategic partnership to make more resources accessible to Canadians interested in online Doukhobor family research.

Initially, Kalmakoff and LAC will focus on identifying the significant amount of Doukhobor archival material held at LAC. The material, covering 1899 to the present, includes thousands of government records, private manuscript collections, books, reports, periodicals, newspapers, photographs, and sound and video recordings. The result will be a thematic guide to help locate the material and assist in general research. The thematic guide will be available free of charge at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy as well as at www.doukhobor.org.

In addition to the thematic guide to Doukhobor records, LAC and Kalmakoff will develop a specialized web page for Doukhobor genealogy at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy. The specialized web page will be designed for those who wish to undertake genealogical research on their Doukhobor ancestors. It will provide an overview of select sources and tips for doing effective Doukhobor genealogical research while avoiding numerous pitfalls.

The Doukhobors are a Christian group that originated in Russia in the 17th century. They were persecuted in Tsarist Russia for their religious beliefs, which included pacifism, egalitarianism and communal ownership. In 1899, over 7,500 Doukhobors immigrated to Western Canada. There, they formed large communal farming enterprises. Today an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Doukhobors live in Canada with a similar number living in Russia and the Former Soviet Republics.

“I am pleased to be partnering with LAC to provide guidance and direction to Doukhobor family researchers,” said Kalmakoff. “There is a wealth of records that can help those researching their Doukhobor roots understand their past. Being able to find, locate and use them is absolutely essential.”

About the Doukhobor Genealogy Website

The Doukhobor Genealogy Website is the leading online site for Doukhobor family history. It contains research guides and indices of Doukhobor archival materials in Canada and elsewhere and offers comprehensive glossaries of Doukhobor names and naming practices, geography, maps and place names, in addition to a wealth of historical texts and English translations of Russian sources. The creator, researcher and writer Jonathan J. Kalmakoff is a leading authority on Doukhobor genealogy and history. His publications are essential works for the study of Doukhobor family history. For more information, visit www.doukhobor.org.

About Library and Archives Canada

Library and Archives Canada collects and preserves Canada's documentary heritage, and makes it accessible to all Canadians. This heritage includes publications, archival records, sound and audio-visual materials, photographs, artworks, and electronic documents such as websites.
