Does anyone know any information about a snake handling article that ran in Life Magazine. Some of my elder relatives have stated that my great-great grandmother Nancy Kleinick was photographed and there was a story about her in an issue. I would appreciate any help.

my great grand mother who recently passes talked of goin to snake handlin services. i, bein raised in a church who believed in shoutin when ye felt the spirit and prasin the lord and speakin in tongues, have always been intrested in snake handlin. not really handlin the snake but attendin a service. id like to know if anyone knows of any churches in my area where i could attend a service. im only 16 years old, so will i even be allowed to attend a service wehre im not 18 yet? please email me if you have any information. im located in hazard ky and would like to know if there are any churchs in the south esatern past of the state. thank you so very much. -----Brittany

POLICE: No Charges Filed in London Snake Bite Case

Law enforcement officials said no charges will be filed in the case of a London woman (my note: I believe she actually resided in Harlan County KY) who died from a snake bite Sunday during a church service.

Linda Long, 43, a member of East London Holiness Church, died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center about four hours after being bitten by a yellow timber rattlesnake Sunday.

Laurel County Sheriff's Detective Brad Mitchell said snake handling is a violation of Kentucky Law but it is a class "B" misdemeanor.

Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) XL, Chapter 437 states, "Any person who displays, handles, or uses any kind of reptile in connection with any religious service or gathering shall be fined not less that fifty dollars ($50.00) nor more than one hundred dollars ($100.00)."

Mitchell said that Long was a consenting adult and the family and church were close.

"Under the circumstances, they have been through enough, " Mitchell said.

The funeral was scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Arthur's Chapel Church in Rosehill, Va., according to the Rosehill Funeral Home, the Associated Press reported.

Hello my name is Ryan. I am a photojournalism student from California. As part of a US documentary class I am here in the Appalachians trying to do a story on a snake handler. I have read the history and understand why people practice this form of worship. I'm not here to just concentrate on that. I'd like to tell the story of the person, where they're from, what they do, how'd they get into their religion, etc. I tried to contact Nick Sizemore, and Caleb Sizemore in Hyden and Bobfork but I'm afraid they will not talk to me. I'm not affiliated with any media, this is a school project. I really would just like to talk to someone who practices a signs following way. I am trying to find a snake handling parish and hopefully a person to whom I could speak with about photographing a service. It would be for my own personal use, I am a photojournalist and I've been working in Haiti with Vodou and Evangelists and would love to further the scope of my work and documentation. It is not my objective to exploit anyone or give bad press. I believe this bad press comes from ignorance and superstitions... much like Haitian Vodou. Does anyone know of any snake churches in Alabama or Southern Tennessee. I've heard of these churches in Scottsboro, Al ( a book was written about it) and there was an article in the newspaper about one on Sand Mountain years back. I'm not sure if they are still there though. If anyone could inform me on if there are any in Ala. or Southern, TN PLEASE tell me (by post or e-mail). I would be very thankful. I am researching my grandfarther, O.V. Shoupe. He had church services in Ky, Va, WVa, Tn. Had services in the 1970's & 1980's. Had went to jail for holding this type of church services many times back then. Had tent services in and around these states. Lived in TN during his last services and passed away there.
My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth (Farmer) Shoupe.
Would like to find anyone with more information about my grandfarther and grandmother.
Also researching: Evans, Farmer, Delk, Adams, Fraley, Brock, Riddle, ETC.

I'm a norwegian student writing my masters degree in religious studies. My subject is the religion in the Appalachian region, more specifically, snake handling movements. I'm looking for information on the historical origin and later developments in the region. Does anyone know of research on this subject done in the later years? I'm interested in any information on the subject.
During the course of my degree, I hope to travel to the US, and hopefully observe the service, and conduct interviews.
Also looking for contact information to people who participate in these movements, or have knowledge about them.

George Hensley-The Early History.

Good Morning,
I have found doing research that George Hensley first seen serpents being taken up during an outside Church service near Cleveland, Tennessee in 1910.
Also that around 1908 during the dedication of a Church of God in Owl Hollow, Tennessee that A. J. Tomlinson had been asked to attend the ceremony for the dedication of the Church. Rev. Tomlinson could not attend and sent his 16 year old son Homer Tomlinson.
It was during this dedication that George Went Hensley went to the alter and was saved.
In 1912 Rev. A. J. Tomlinson asked George Hensley to become a Minister in the Church of God and Mr. Hensley accepted.
In 1918 Rev. Hensley established the East Chattanooga Church of God.
I know that Rev. Hensley first wife's name was Amanda-but cannot find her maiden name.
I would appreciate any help with finding Amanda Hensley's maiden name and location of her birth.

The Carson Springs Church in White Pine, Tennessee.
The Minister of the Church was Liston Pack.
In 1973 Buford Pack-Liston's brother-and Jimmy Ray Williams died after drinking strychnine during a service held at Rev. Liston's Church.
I would appreciate any additional information on Liston Pack, Jimmy Williams or the history of the Carson Springs Church of White Pine, Tennessee.

I am seeking information on J. W. Brown and his wife Melinda Duvall Brown.
I list that Melinda died Aug. 6th, 1995 at Middlesboro, KY after being bitten by a rattlesnake.
That John Wayne Brown died October 3, 1998 at Macadonia, Alabama after being bitten.
Can anyone tell me anymore about this young couple?
Also does the "The Signs Followers Church" follow the same doctrine as the Snake-Handlers Church?
