I came across this thread today. My Dutch cigar makers came to New York and had the name Gabay. I am told that there were many Jewish cigar makers in the Netherlands who came to America, as you likely know. I also find that many with the surname Gabay hailed from Turkey, Iran and Morocco. I'm not sure if the Gabay name connects us to Judaism or Arab roots. Many in our family are amateur genealogists and have pretty much hit a roadblock, being stuck in the early 1800s, and can go no further. I did check all the links in the thread for more information, except for the books mentioned. If anyone has any information to share, I'd love to hear it.
