I just saw your posting as I am new to the board. Please do a search under Jews in Turkey as I've seen the name there (left Spain for protection in Turkey...) . Sorry I don't have that url right on board but I do have this following one. The name is Sephardic and means "trouble-maker."

Hello, my name is Veronica Asay and we have always believed that the Asays originated in Scotland or France. Recently I went on the website www.sephardim.com and saw a variation of my name on there: Asaya. Any idea if this is a coincedence or maybe I'm on to something, I don't know. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be appreciative. Thanks and God bless.

I knew in Tangier (Morocco) a man named Leon Assa, who was teacher a the Alliance Israelite Universelle, he later moved to Madrid Spain. I think he must be deceded now, but I think he still has family there.

H Veronica -- I have copies of tin-types with a note to my father that these were his ASAY great-grandparents from Scotland. It would be another tiny bit of evidence pointing toward a Scottish origin for at least some ASAY families.

These would have been the parents of Ellen ASAY b. 31 Mar 1850 in Cherokee, IA. I have no other information about that line of my family. If anyone reading this knows of an ASAY family in Iowa during the mid-1800s, I would love to hear from you. Penny
