I am trying to find where and how to obtain information from the Lutheran Church in Apolda. My Paternal G.Grandfather and G.Grandmother Anton Karl Otto Heinichen lived and died there. I do not know if they were born there. I am assuming(I know, I know) that they were Lutheran as that is what their two sons that came to USA were. G.Grandmother Rosella (Schumann) Heinichen died in 1932 and G.Grandfather Anton Heinichen died in 1945.
Any help with addresses, location, email addresses, or any other information would be greatly appreciated.

I am descended from Henry Sanders ((1768-1850)on my mother's side. I have an ancestry chart which shows an Eva Frantz (1768-1847) as Henry's wife. Eva's parents were George Adam Frantz (no dates) and Merdice Renner. There is nothing on my chart showing where they lived. A cousin sent me this. My mother's parents were William Leinbach and Clara Sanders. They were born, lived and died in Union and Snyder Counties, Pa. This is all the info I have at this time.

I am researching a family member who is an 1851 Canadian census listed his family as being Lutheran. They were from Kingdom of Hanover but where specifically I can't tell. All records from this census forward only state two origins: Germany and Kingdom of Hanover. One census though has Bra? with the ? being either an m or n or something that can't be told.

How would one locate a record of birth for this person in 1820? I would guess their family was Lutheran as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Let me get back to you with a name and eMail address.

If you are going to begin Wisconsin research, go back as far as you can in Sheboygan County as the starting point. The surname may also spread North into Manitowoc Co., WI.

There is a pretty good county site (Sheboygan) at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sheboygan/

Sheboygan area high school year books at:
http://sheboyganhistory.com/

The two sites above coupled with Ancestry information and LDS Beta Search at:
http://fsbeta.FamilySearch.org

If you are not familiar with beta, there is a sign in/password which alows you to search for free. It is not yet up to speed with information like the regular LDS site but much easier to use.

In Clark County, the county web site is at:
http://wvls.lib.wi.us/ClarkCounty/

Manitowoc County web site is at:
http://www.2manitowoc.com/

I do transcriptions for Clark and Sheboygan Counties so you may see my name spread on both sites.

Regards, Bob (Ft. Lauderdale)~~

Gloria, thanks for the tips. I asked my bit of a distant cousin who grew-up in Chicago and whose fam. kept-up on teaching the younger generation the German language and he didn't know either.
Maybe after I find out I can teach him something for a change!
BOB--excellent question about our written skills a few generations from now LOL! Even today they don't do much cursive writing at all! My 15 yr. old grandson cannot even read cursive and rarely uses it due to homework, beginning in 4th grade, needing to be turned in as computer generated. True fact! He is not a dummy by any means. He's an "A" student and plays bagpipes (really hard instrument). I was shocked to learn he didn't know cursive. But, hey, maybe that could be a little side-job for some of us very soon--translating cursive into text. Kind of sad, though.
I think I'm going to scan some of those records and see if anyone can figure it out.
Ronnee

There is another style that preceded sutterlin but do not recall what it is referred to or when it ended and sutterlin took over.

I think the wikipedia site sutterlin is most likely a 'perfect' version of how to do it but throw in the human factor and all kinds of little 'do-dads' occur.

Wonder what our language skills are going to be like in a couple of generations with all the 'texting' and such going on!

Bob~~

After I googled a bit, I found that, traditionally, onc a female has reached eighteen she would be referred to as Fraulein, Generally, Frau would not be abbreviated but doing my own German research, spme pastors or record keepers were notorious with bad handwriting and I'm sure they abbreviated.

Google a bit for German script, especially "secretary" (cursive). See if anything matches.

Gloria

Looking at German script it could be a capital "F" that might to one's "unGerman" eye look like an "r" and mean "Frau". If "Fraulein" (Miss) there might be more than just the one letter to differentiate the abbreviated "Frau".

Gloria Bauer Ishida

hmmm

I'm sure there are more but I was told that 'hirated' was the term for married woman.

I don't know the in's and out's of German grammar but I assume there is probably another term that maybe official church record keepers used. Don't know the in's and out's of Latin grammar either...

Sorry to not be much help!

Bob~~

Thanks, Bob, if I find the answer I certainly will post.
It's only some of the women's names that are preceded by the "R" so I thought it might indicate that they were married women or single women, knowing that would be a BIG help in my research. This was an old German speaking church dating back to 1843 that continued to hold one service per week in German up until 1981.

R.....?

I Googled various genealogical symbol site and could not find the answer.

One site is http://www.wisevahistoricalsoc.org/genealogy_symbols.htm
There are other sites, some containing Latin symbols and symbols that I never would have dreamed of. May take some digging!

On some of my ancestor German cousins, via birth or baptism, the last or the last two letters of the surname were missing and 'in added and that was suppose to represent a female.

Very strange... not sure what the rules and regulations were in the older German Lutheran Churches, maybe it stood for Reformiet (Reformed, E & R) to indicate that this sposonor/witness was not Lutheran?? Just speculating on my part.

If you do find the answser, please do post!

Regards, Bob~~

I obtained Baptism records from St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago IL. which are handwritten dating back to the late 1890's. On these records the letter "R" appears before some of the female sponsors. Does anyone know what that means? Here are examples:

Amalie Julia Unbehaun
b. Jan. 7,1896
Baptized April 10, 1896
Parents are Oswald and Louise 538 Wieland St.
Godparents are R. Amalie Rohrbach and Julia Habe

Walter Franz Unbehaun
b. March 1893,
baptized Oct 29, 1893
Parents are Oswald and Louise 538 Wieland St
Godparent R. Bertha Eckebricht

Catharine Louise Unbehaun
b. Feb. 7,1888
Parents are Oswald and Louise
Baptized July 17,1888
Godparent R. Katharine Wetzel

Thanks for any insight as to what the "R" means.

Ronnee

Some time ago I wrote looking for some help in trying to locate a baptismal record for my father. So far, I have not been successful. I just seem to keep chasing my own tail. I think one of my blocks is the name of a German Lutheran church in Oneida or for that matter in Albany where they might have been members. They were members of Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford by 1900, and both his father and mother died within two years of each other and were buried from that church. His sister was also married there in 1916. I don't know what to do next if I can do anything at all. There is no 1890 census record, I can't get answers from any Sangerbund entities (He was a member of their chorus.) I don't find them in an Albany directory in 1886 or 7, Union records for that period are long ago lost, I just hate to give up!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Dorothea

I did learn though it was part of the Missouri Synod.

The family was also a member of the Church of Christ under Rev. Kravish when they died in 1915 znc 1917. My father's sister was also married there in 1916 by Rev. Kravish.

Can anyone give me any information on the Oneida Church. The church record of my father's birth might be the only one in existence.

Thank you for any help.

SMITLEY/SCHMITLEY in Westmoreland Co., PA

Trying to find Tami SMITLEY-DION of Post Falls, Idaho. But, this message may benefit someone else looking for SMITLEY in Westmoreland Co., PA.

Tami,

I was looking on line for postings and queries regarding the Smith family of Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, and came across your posting on a Lutheran (Trivent) site. I thought I would drop you a note. Hopefully this is a lead for you.

A number of my ancestors are buried in Seanor St. Paul's Cemetery near New Stanton, Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. While searching this cemetery for my Smiths, Longs, Erretts, Baughmans, etc., I came across two graves with the surname Smitley or Schmitle. If I recall correctly, they were husband and wife buried next to each other.

You will probably find their death/burial records in one of Paul M. Ruff's books: [1] St. Paul (Seanor) Reformed, 1821 - 1862, Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, Church Records [2] St. Paul (Seanor) Lutheran - Part 1 1822 - 1870, Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, Church Records [3] St. Paul (Seanor) Lutheran - Part 2, Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, Church Records. You can find a link to a book seller by Googling "Baltzer Meyer Historical Society". However, before you go ahead and purchase any of the books, you can request a cemetery reading search. It costs $2.25 per surname per cemetery -- much cheaper that buying a book. There is a pdf order form to download at the BMHS site.

I hope this proves helpful to you and that you find your PA ancestors.

Mary Ellen (Smith)

The two girls were likely teenagers. If they had to be confirmed, prior to communion, then what was the typical minimum age for communion in the Lutheran church at that time?

Thanks.

The word communicant could be any one after confirmation age and a member of the church so unless the year in question was when the two daughters were confirmed they could have been any age.

"John "Henry" attended Dartmouth and practiced medicine in Michigan (do not have town) and married Laura Schoch of the Lithopolis area. They had five children, Laura who married a ? Cosberg, Florence who married a ? Perrin, Mary who married Horace Manning, John Reed who changed his name to John Pflueger Reed and married Dorothy Clemens Griswold, Faith who married Roger Weller, and Helen who I have no further information available."

I, too, had heard Henry practiced in MI, but I never once found him on any census there. (Of course that doesn't mean he wasn't there BETWEEN census years).

Here's how I found it: ""On the same cross street, to the south, lived Herr Pflueger with his wife, two sons, and a daughter. The boys, Adam and Henry, were my constant companions. Adam was two years older, and Henry my own age. We passed through school together, but when such learning as was possible in the Lithopolis schools was acquired, then our lives separated. Adam graduated at the Lutheran Capital University and became later a professor there. Henry studied medicine and took up a practice, I believe, in Michigan." "THE VILLAGE.
I don't believe I'm related at all to the Pflueger's. The reason I have them on the website and in the database is that some at one time either resided, died, buried, married, baptized, etc., within Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio. Adam's wives are both buried in Bloom township as is Adam Pfluger (1851-1921), and portions of the Pfluger family resided in Lithopolis (which is in Bloom Twp.). The website is at www.foorgenealogy.com/gene.html

Shelly
John "Henry" attended Dartmouth and practiced medicine in Michigan (do not have town) and married Laura Schoch of the Lithopolis area. They had five children, Laura who married a ? Cosberg, Florence who married a ? Perrin, Mary who married Horace Manning, John Reed who changed his name to John Pflueger Reed and married Dorothy Clemens Griswold, Faith who married Roger Weller, and Helen who I have no further information available.

Maria Margaret "Mary" married George Marvin and moved to Findley. (Findley was a destination for Pflueger, Wagenhals and Schneiders, would be interested why so many moved there.) They had two children, Claire Elizabeth who married Adolph "Ad" Martin Clement Stellhorn (son of Frederick Stellhorn, a noted professor at Capital) Both, I believe are buried at Reber Hill, Ashville. Clair & Ad had four children, Mary Christine who married E.J. Hammer, Frederick Marvin whose wife's name I do not have, Ann Elizabeth who married Bruce Gebhart and Barbara Claire who married Thomas Wuichet.
The seven children of "Adam" William Henry Pflueger and Anna Margaret Oehlschlaeger were John Henry "Luther" who married Anna Caroline Pauschert, became a Lutheran minister and eventually a professor at Luther Seminary, Regina, Sashatchwan, Canada and is buried at Oakridge, Tennesee. Charles William married Emma Elizabeth Volkmar of Westerville, Ohio. Charles was the first full time minister of the church my wife and I attend, Saint Paul Lutheran, Westerville, Ohio. Charles also founded Grace Lutheran, Westerville, where I was baptized and my wife and I were married. In 1916 Charles was called to lead the Lutheran outreach which was to become Lutheran Social Services in Columbus, Ohio. He served until his death in 1946. He and Emma are buried at the Saint Paul Cemetery on Walnut Street, Westerville, Ohio.
The third son Edwin Bernard married Helen Ada Schuh the daughter of another noted Capital professor. He became a Civil Engineer and helped to build the Panama Canal. They had three children, Theodore Loy, Mary Margaret and Ruth Elisabeth. Theodore Loy "Ted" participated in the Battan Death March and was a much decorated World War II hero. Ted was a genealogist and his work forms the basis for much of my work. Upon the death of his first wife, Edwin married Helen Irene Brazada.
The fourth son of Adam, George Alfred married Elsie Ann Berg of Richmond, Indiana. He was a Lutheran minister in the Sandusky County, Ohio area. The couple had four daughters: Margaret Anna, Alice Louise, Martha Elizabeth and Ruth Frieda.
The fifth son of Adam, Jesse Philip was the overacheiver in the family. He married Myrtle Alma Mauderer a Cajun descendent from New Orleans, Louisana. Upon graduation from Capital Seminary, he decided to become a missionary. To make himself a valuable missionary he attended medical school and received a Medical Doctorate specializing in tropical diseases. He took ship to India, but World War I broke out and the ship returnded to Seattle, Washington. There he physically built and founded a Lutheran Church. Some years later, he was called to become a professor of Theology at nearby Pacific Lutheran Seminary. At Pacific Lutheran he served as Team Physician for all of the schools sports. In his spare time he headed the counties Civil Defense, which being near volcanic Mount Rainier, must have been a time consuming effort. Jesse and Myrtle had six children: Jesse Philip Martin, Jr., Wilhelm Adam "Bill", Henry Gerhard "Gary", "Merle" Robert, Raymond Edwin, and Marilyn Myrtle. I am told that he was an outstanding, memorable professor. The school saw fit to name a large dormitory in his name. The couple are buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Parkland, Washington.
The sixth son was Martin Theodore "Mart" who made a career in the United States Army. Unfortunately Uncle Mart never married.
The seventh child was my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth "Mabel" who was actually born in the families apartment in Lehmann Hall, Capital University, Bexley, Ohio. Mabel grew up in the dormitory but when it became time to attend college she could not attend Capital as it was an all male school. She attended nearby Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio to become a teacher. As her brother, Charles, was a minister in Westerville she resided with him.
Mabel attended Charles and Emma's church, Saint Paul Lutheran and there she met a tall farm boy neighbor, Charles Grover "Charlie" Wurm. The couple married at Saint Paul and had eight children, the oldest being my father, Charles Donald "Don". The seven younger children are: Arthur Eugene "Art", Dr. Melvin Adam "Mel or Doc", Ray Richard "Ray", Eloise Virginia "Eloise", Mary Jane, Theodore Irvin "Ted" and Betty Anne.
This is part of the Pflueger family history which I have been blest with. Shelly, I would be interested in your connection?
