Kerman Couple Seized in Probe of Counterfeiting
Paul Malakanoff, Wife Under Arrest After Son Reveals Coin-Making Device
Paul Malakanoff, 57, and his wife, Mary Malakanoff, 48, of Kerman, are held in the Fresno County Jail today on a charge of possessing counterfeiting apparatus brought by Andrew Malakanoff, who is Malakanoff's son.
The man and woman, who is the stepmother of the younger Malakanoff, were arrested by Deputy Sheriffs John Ford and J. E. Martin, and Constable S. B. Walters of Kerman. They say they found the apparatus and a few counterfeit coins at the Malakanoff ranch near Kerman.
The apparatus consisted in metal dies and plates for the manufacture of fake 25-cent, 50-cent and dollar coins.
The complaint was filed late yesterday in Justice Earle J. Church's court.
Martin says a number of the coins were passed in the Kerman district, but there is no evidence directly linking the Malakanoffs with putting the coins into circulation. The officers say young Malakanoff revealed the activity fearing he would be involved if it continued.
The investigation thus far has not shown the extent of the asserted counterfeiting operations, but apparently the apparatus had not been used recently as the officers found no metal for the making of the coins.

Counterfeiting Charge Against Couple Is Dropped
A charge of counterfeiting brought against Paul and Mary Malakanoff, husband and wife, by Malakanoff's son, Andrew recently, has been dismissed by Justice of the Peace Earle J. Church on the grounds of insufficient evidence to link them with responsibility for counterfeiting apparatus found at their home.
The motion for dismissal was made by the district attorney's office after evidence was introduced that the Malakanoffs had recently moved into the house where the apparatus was found. They formerly lived near Kerman.
