Richard R Moon (~1834-?), Anna Bidell/Biddle Moon (~1846-1890), Wayne Co, Michigan

Hello,

I'm seeking information on my second-great grandparents, Richard Moon and Anna (or Ann) Biddell/Biddle/Bedale. I apologize for the LONG post, but I want to provide everything I can, to see if I can make a connection.

Census Information [calculated birth years are bracketed]:

1850: Grass Lake, Jackson Co, Michigan; Surname MOON
Edward, age 60 [1790]
Sally (Sarah), age 52 [1798]
Harriett, age 20 [1830]
Jane, age 18 [1832]
Richard, age 16 [1834]
(All were born in Canada. Additional records show Richard was born in Simcoe, Ontario, and Sarah Taylor Moon was born in Nova Scotia.)

1860: Grass Lake, Jackson Co, Michigan; Surname MOON
Sarah, age 61 [1799]
Richard, age 26 [1834]

1870: Sumpter Twp, Wayne Co, MI; Surname MOON
Richard R, age 35 [1835]
Ann, age 22 [1848]
Sarah I, age 4 [1866]
John, age 2 [1868]
George C, age 11/12 [1869]
(There is a 13-year gap in age between Richard and Ann.)

1880: Sumpter Twp, Wayne Co, MI; Surname MOON
Richard, age 48 [1832]
Ann, age 35 [1845]
(Sarah) Isabelle, age 15 [1865]
John, age 13 [1867]
Sidney, age 5 [1875, but his WWI draft card indicates 1873]
(There is still a 13-year gap in age between Richard and Ann, but the [calculated year of birth] is skewed.)
I believe George died, as he is missing from the census and I haven't been able to find any later records for him, but I'm not positive.

In June of 1882, they had another daughter, Charlotte.

5 Mar 1890: Richard Moon [age 57] married Ester A Spence [age 42]. Spence could be the name of a previous spouse.

I found a marriage record dated 4 Jan 1864, for Richard Moon to a woman named Isabel Case. While Isabel could be Ann's name (she did name her daughter Sarah Isabelle), the surname isn't even close! They were married at Ypsilanti, as shown:

"...Richard R Moon of Grass Lake, aged 26 [1838] years and Isabel Case of Superior, age 17 [1847]..."
This is a link to the record, on the bottom-right section of the image: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-16786-66898-71?cc....
(The age difference is only 9 years, instead of 13, and Richard would have been 30, not 26.)

Another challenge: the surname Moon is often misspelled and/or indexed as Moore. I found the following book excerpt online, and the way the details line up, I'm pretty convinced they belong to me.

From: History of Detroit and Wayne County and Early Michigan by Silas Farmer (1890):

"Richard R. MOORE was born near Toronto Canada, in 1832. [Richard R. Moon was born about 90 miles from Toronto.] When four years old he came with his parents to Michigan, and settled in Wayne Co. Edward MOORE, his father, died in 1848 [Edward MOON died 5 Mar 1852, in Grass Lake, Jackson County.] His mother died in 1863. [Sarah TAYLOR Moon died 17 Jul 1863 in Grass Lake, Jackson County.] He married Anna Bidell, of Sumpter, Jan. 1, 1864 [this is only 3 days off the marriage date of Richard MOON to Isabel Case]. They have two children, Isabelle and John [Matches MOON]. He located in Sumpter, in 1866, on his farm of 55 acres, and has lived there since." [The 1886 Wayne County Directory shows Richard MOON living in the Martinsville Post Office area on a 50-acre farm.]

Since Richard's second marriage was in March of 1890, I'm assuming that Ann died sometime between June 1882 (when her youngest child was born) and March 1890. The 1880 census indicates that both of her parents were born in New York.

I have not found any death records for Richard Moon, Isabel Case/Moon or Ann Biddle/Bidell/Bedale.

I have ruled out the following families:
Cornelius T Biddle family of Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, MI
Horace Bidwell family of Washtenaw County
George W Bedell family of Wayne County

I am cross-posting this message on the Moon and Biddle surname message boards, and the DSGR board.

Thanks for reading!

Nancy
According to the 1920 census they were living on Candler in Highland Park. Looking at a map, Candler is just south of Six Mile Rd. Do you know what church they belonged to? Or their religious affiliation? You may be able to find a church in that neighborhood that would have a record of their funeral and where they were buried.

Burial location: William "Billy/Willie" Craft d. 28 October 1925 age about 12y

I am trying to locate the cemetery where William Craft is buried. Last known address in 1920 was 589 Kitchener St., Detroit City. He could be buried near his grandparents, William (b abt. 1861)& Amelia (Mimmie)(Kaufman) Craft (b. abt. 1864). The grandparents lived with the family in the 1920 census. Young William Craft was age 6 in Jan 1920 census. His mother, Sophie (Abegg) Craft died & is buried in Tucson, AZ. His father, Vernon Stanley Craft died in San Diego, CA on 09 May 1940. He might also be in the same cemetery as his son, William. I believe Vernon Craft might have been cremated and brought back here for burial. Sophie Craft is my grandmother's sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shirley Lindenberger Hazelwood

If you find out where to get divorce records, I would be interested in hearing about that.

Look at the information about adoptions at the following. It appears that if someone was born before May 28, 1945 and there is no denial statement in the file, the adoptee could request her adoption information.

http://michigan.gov/dhs/0,4562,7-124-60126_7116_7125-14884--...

Good luck

First of all, the information about where someone lived in 1935 is not always correct.

I would see if you could find divorce papers for Mary. I have no idea where to find them. Did a google search but it was not helpful. Call the Wayne County Clerk's office to see if they know.

The Detroit City Directory for 1928-29 (p. 1827) shows a Clement Scott, phys with Lyda his wife. I think that they list 4227 McGraw as his place of practice and then it has h do which I think means that he lives there also with do meaning ditto.

The same city directory has City Receiving hospital located on St. Antoine between Macomb and Clinton streets (p 665). This is the same place where Detroit Receiving Hospital is located today. Possibly they have records or you could ask if they had African-American doctors on staff back in the 1930s. You could also try to see if there is some type of record with the various Doctor/Medical associations such as the AMA. Try the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor to see if they show he went to U-M.

Contact the Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society to see if they can help. http://fhwgs.org/

Please help my Adopted Grandmother find her birth family

I'm attempting to help my grandmother locate her birth family. When she was 18 she found out she was adopted. The information she was able to find is as follows:

All information concerns individuals in the Detroit area unless noted

She was born in Dec 1935 in Detroit MI - her adoptive parents are listed on her birth certificate.

*She has the probate court papers from her adoption. There is a probate court number, but no information other than the names of the mother and father. The names listed are Mary Chudinski and Laurence Chudinski. In the 1930 census, I find a family with a FATHER (Age 66) named Laurence, with a married DAUGHTER Mary Kierzek, with the son-in-law living there as well, some siblings, and their children.

Interestingly, in the 1940 census, Mary (who I believe is my great grandmother) and Steven are divorced, and Steven is remarried and noted as living at the same location for the last 5 years, which would be 1935, which is the year my grandmother was born.

The other information she has I am trying to utilize is the name of the doctor who delivered her. He was her godfather, and the person she believes responsible for arranging the adoption. He was Dr. Clement Scott (b. 1898), married to Lydia, or Lyda, as my grandmother remembered her. He was an African American Doctor. The Chudinski's and Kiercek are Polish and White. My grandmother is mixed. She says she heard from her godmother, Dr. Scott's wife, the grandfather was very upset and cried at the hearing, and that her father being african american is why she was given up.

I thought if I can located where this doctor practiced in Detroit, I could maybe find more records to establish a definite link. On the 1940 census, it only says 'City Hospital' and on the 1930 census it says 'Private Practice' So where do I go from here, outside of a DNA test to unravel this mystery?

The only death certificate I can find for my great-grandfather, George A Morehead (b. 29 Jul 1852, Detroit; d. 28 Jun 1905, Detroit) says "Inquest pending" in the Cause of Death field. It also gives his place of death as the Detroit River. Is it possible to locate the inquest report and if so, from what agency would it come? If inquest reports are not available, is there another way to determine what happened to him?

Wayne Co Probate Records to about 1889 (with indexes to 1901) are now digitized on familysearch.org. From the home page do not put in a name, but scroll down and choose US records. Then select Michigan Probate Records, then browse images,& select Wayne. The indexes are listed first and then the actual files. These work just like using a roll of microfilm.
The last couple of issues of the DSGR magazine had police applications. I'll have a look when I get home.
Hi Meg.

I posted a Summary of Detroit Recorder's Court records available at the Archives of Michigan on the DSGR Facebook page (it is under post by others). It includes Police payroll during Officer Knox's service.

I've also found a few Detroit Free Press articles on William I'd be happy to email you. There are three from 1889 (as an active detective) and one as an officer in 1892. The 1892 article mentions Officer Knox has been on the police force for six years.

I am looking for any information regarding my great-grandfather, William Fredrick Knox ... PRIOR to 1900. I know the following for fact:

He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Marie Cummings 19 Sep 1887 in Detroit.
They had a daughter, Madge Knox, who was born in Jun 1888 and died 3 Jul 1888.
They had a son, Floyd William Knox, born 3 March 1893 in Detroit and died 17 May 1986 in Bradenton, Manatee, Florida.
William died 13 Oct 1913 in Grace Hospital in Detroit.

On the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses he is listed respectively as a policeman and as a mounted policeman. My grandfather, Floyd, corroborated this before his death. Floyd also stated that his father was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and that his father had taken him on several excursions to visit Hamilton.

Now for the stuff that doesn't make sense or definately isn't concrete:

On his marriage certificate, he states he was born in New York State and his age is 29
On the 1900 census, someone states he and both his parents were born in Canada and his age is 45.
On the 1910 census, he is listed as born in Canada/English, his father's birthplace is listed as Scotch/English and his mother's birthplace is listed as Ohio and his age is 57.
On his death certificate, he has a birthdate of 28 Feb 1853; that he died at the age of 60 yrs, 7 mon, and 15 days; that he had already retired from the police force; that his birthplace was Ontario; that his father was Wm Knox (first mention of father's name); and that father was born in Ontario; mother's name was listed as "Don't Know" with her birthplace listed as England. The informant for all of the death information was a George W Clunis was was a funeral director per the Detroit Directory in 1914.

There are several listings for Wm, William and Wm F in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 US Censuses, but nothing that really lifts the hairs on the back of my neck.

This is what I am looking for:
Any thoughtful ideas of things I may have failed to research (Probate letter went out 3 days ago)
When exactly he joined the Detroit Police Force and if there is any surviving sources of records from that time period for the Detroit Police.
Anything pertaining to his actual parentage and place of birth.

Thanks for any and all help,

Meg Landseadel Staton

Catherine Frick CARROLL, 1940-1960

I'm trying to find out what happened to Catherine CARROLL, who lived in Detroit from about 1940 to at least 1952. She appears in the 1940 census as a 50yo divorcee, born in Washington DC, living in a boarding house at 214 Erskine Street and working as a cook for a church. Her previous married name was Catherine FRICK; her birth name was HANDIBOE.

Also in 1940, her daughter Jeanne Frick was living in a boarding house at 2619 Cass Ave in Detroit; she later married Thomas Edgar Johnston.

A family obituary in 1952 says Catherine Carroll was still living in Detroit. She disappears from all records after that.

I'd deeply appreciate any tips or lookup offers - I'm working from Seattle, so I'm not sure how to access city directories, etc. THANK YOU!!!
Try calling Holy Cross Cemetery to get a copy of her mother's burial record, especially if you don't already have the exact date. Then use her death date to obtain a death certificate from Michigan's vital records department (http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,4612,7-132-4645_4702---,00.ht...). I would pay to get the certified copy so that you get all the information available about her parents. You could also try searching for a digital copy (free) on http://seekingmichigan.org/discover/death-records. Death records from 1897-1922 are available on that official Michigan site and should match the name on the burial card.

Have you tried looking for the passenger manifest on ellisisland.org yet? That could be a source for what nationality and last place of residence the family had at the time of immigration. That, combined with the parents' names on the death certificate should be a good starting point for looking through regional Polish (or other country) records.

My great-grandmother also immigrated as a child in 1903 and her father died in 1906 and was buried at Holy Cross. Coincidence!

You can call 734-285-2155 and talk to the cemetery management staff. They also manage Our Lady of Hope cemetery, so if you have record requests for that, too, then you just have to make one phone call. You can also leave a message and they will call you back.

Someone goes over to Holy Cross once a day on weekdays to fulfill record requests, so it might take a day or two to get a response. I've had an excellent experience recently with assistance from Tracie. She emailed me scans of the records I requested at no cost. Faxing was also an option.

I was in town briefly and unfortunately discovered all of this after I'd visited Holy Cross and was unable to locate 3 out of 4 graves in person. Though I had their exact locations from records kept by my ancestors, there is NO MAP ON SITE to help you find the sections or lots!

On top of that, I think that those 3 graves were flat markers that had sunken in too far for me to be able to see anyway. Tracie said that you can request to have specific headstones raised, which can take 3-4 weeks for grounds crew to get to. There is apparently a new cemetery website in the works that may be a future place to obtain a cemetery map. Until then, the only information online is at http://www.aod.org/our-archdiocese/directories/archdiocesan-... Crossing my fingers for future researchers that the new website will also contain an index of records.

Hopefully some kind BillionGraves.com volunteers will contribute their time in the near future to update Holy Cross' database of photos and searchable names. Right now it's pretty sparse. http://billiongraves.com/pages/cemeteries/HolyCrossCemetery/...

Hope that saves you some time!

Helena also came here with her new husband John Stachlewitz. John worked for the railroad company in Ypsilanti, MI near Ann Arbor. My mom tells me that Marys sister and Johns brother came over here. Im not sure when. I was told that Mary Maschke's family had a boot factory in Berlin or somewheres in Germany.
Hello,

May I'll find some help here ... and ope that my english will be understable ..

I'm trying to find what's happen to my ancestor, John George Erben, born Johann Geog Erben in 1844 in Germany.
He was living 34 Stanton bvd in Detroit at least between 1904 and 1909. He emigrated to USA after 1888 (date of the death of his first spouse). We know that he was living in Detroit since we find his adress mentioned on the ship manifest regarding his daughter (my 2d grand mother) who travelled two time to USA from germany and england to visit him ( but she didn't emigrated to USA: this is the reason I'm alive and French ...). After many long searches we are still unable to find what hapenned to him, his second spouse, childs (if he had some), his death date and burial place..
We do have a very documented genalogy about his ancestors and some relatives from the same Erben family branch, emigrated before him, with descendant still living in USA .. but nothing about his proper descendancy in USA (if he have one ..). Note that this is about the ERBEN german family name, not the Austrian or Bohemian one ... (as there are some Erben of these two last country in Detroit at this periode). I'm maintaining a hudge tree on Geni and I'll be happy to share any information I own with anyone.
Thanks, Nancy. It looks like the county clerk just sent the records in batches at the end of the year, since the ledgers aren't chronological or alphabetical. It must have taken quite a while to record them in the ledgers, since there is such a long lag time between the event date and the record date.

I appreciate the link to the info. I didn't realize the wiki existed.

Does anyone know what became of the pre-1970 records from the Stanley Turowski Funeral home?

I contacted them directly, but Mr. Boleski responded that they purchased the funeral home in 2001. Their records only go back to about 1970 and they don't know where the other records are.

Thanks for any help!

Danborns or Danboms of Michigan

I am trying to track down a Great Uncle, Ernest Yates, born in Astley, Lancashire, England in 1890. He emigrated to Canada in 1905. He entered the United States in 1916 through Duluth, Minnisota. In 1917 he is next in Tazewell, VA signing a WW1 draft registration card in 1917 at his place of work at the Carter Coal Co. He then turns up in Wayne, Detroit and is married to Marion Macomber on 04 Oct 1919. Marion was born in 1888 in Opechee, Houghton, MI. Marion's father is Albert Aldean Macomber born Nov 1856/1859 in Maine. His wife is Anna Pauline Hensene Macomber (nee OMAN or Osman) of Norwegian decent. They were married in 1880 in Maine.
There were 3 children from Marion's first marriage to Danbom (This has also been spelt as Danborn), they are Clayton T Danbom, Edward Carl E Danbom, Neyrete L Danbom. The last we have is the 1940 census, where Ernest is 47 years of age, Marion would be 50, but is not noted at the address, Clayton is not present, Carl is 31 and Neyrete L Danbom is recorded as Myrtle L Daly, widowed, aged 29.
Does this information make any connections with anyone, or can anyone provide some more information?

Michigan vital records, late 1800's

How was the information for the vital records collected in the late 1800's?

The scanned images that appear on sites like familysearch.org show a ledger format, all in the same hand, recorded during the calendar year following a birth or death. The records aren't chronological, nor are they alphabetical, though they do appear to be grouped by county.

How was the information transmitted to the person making the notations in the ledger?

Were there written documents made at the time of a birth or death that were sent to a central location for later recording in the ledger?

If so, is there any place where those original documents were kept once the ledger was created?

Thanks for any info!
OK so I have an update. I received a reply back from the Popular Library Dept/Detriot Library pertaining to my obituary/death date search request on William J. Holland. Unfortunately, the 3 results they gave me were not a match. Really bummed about that. The only thing I don't understand is that the request form that I filled out indicated that a search would not only include newspaper obituary research but also the Detroit Death Index. But there was not mention of whether or not they tried that. I emailed them to find out but no reply back yet.

I am printed off a birth record form from the State of Michigan site. I'm mailing that off today to see if I can get William's son, Joseph T. Holland's. birth cert. Hopefully that will confirm his parent's names for me especially his mother's maiden name. Once I have that i will request their marriage record.

Thanks again for your input.
Loralee
Hi,
Thank you for the info. Yes, I am trying to obtain Williams Death Cert so that I can find out what his parents names were and hopefully find out when they arrived in the US and ultimately where in Ireland they originated.

Below is a link to the form for the library to do a search on deaths. I found this by clicking on Research and Resources tab at the top of the library's home page. Scroll down about midway and there is link to the Obituary or Death Notice search then this form comes up:

http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/Obit...

I filled this out and sent it along with payment to the attention of the Popular Library Detp. at the end oof Feb. Hoping to get a date for William's death so I can request his death cert. I haven't been able to find a marriage record for Ellen and William but will start digging into that a little deeper. I did get a suggestion to look at the Mt. Olivet Cemetary list on line. I found a Joseph Holland who could be my great-grandfather. The one who went missing. But will have to request the death cert to see if it's a good match.

I'm inclined to think that asking Burton to search for free over the phone for the City of Detroit Death's since they have the form on line and charge $25.00 (if you don't have an exact date of death)and $15.00 per name with an exact date.

I will keep in mind your suggestion about checking with the county too.

Thanks.
Loralee
