The issue of records not being on-line or not being free doesn't make for a brick wall.
There is less than 5% of historical data digitized and on-line, that means the 95%+ is not going to magically appear on your computer screen.
Do you have a library where you live? The best thing you can do at this stage is to check out a (free) "how to" genealogy book. Your local Family History Center (go check on familysearch.org for the one nearest you) can also have vast (or access to) and free genealogy resources.
"Great grandma was an Indian" is the #1 family history myth. Until you find some hard evidence, an unsubstantiated family tale should not factor in how you research. Let the evidence write the story, not the other way around.
