Help - I've hit a brick wall with my grandfather!!!

Classification: Query
Surnames: Barnes
You would think I'd be able to trace up to my great-grandparents, but no luck. There is very little information on my paternal grandfather, but what I do have is listed below:

William (possibly J,or Joseph?) Barnes
B: about August 1916
Louisiana or Mississippi
D: May 2001

I have come across the 1920 Census information that lists his parents as:

William Barnes
Ernestine Barnes

However, I then run into the problem with Ernestine Barnes - I cannot trace find her maiden name and find her information.

Another thing to note, would be that my grandfather was definitely mulatto and the 1920 Census lists both his parents as black. Also, his death certificate list his mother's name as Bertha.

Nothing is making sense!! And there are no living family members that can shed any light on the situation. Any ideas/suggestions that could point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.
