A relative passed on another document and it reads Gerscovitz. I've found my particular family on the 1911 Census and several are recorded as being born in Cartigna, Russia. I think this is a mis-spelling of Kretinga, Lithuania (former Russian Empire). There was a strong link between Kretinga and Sunderland as a commerce route between Hartlepool and Kretinga where many Litvaks came through here if intending to travel on to th US/Canada from Liverpool. My family on the 1911 Census are in Liverpool with one child being born in Sunderland in 1908. They don't appear to have got to the New World.... loads pop in Leeds. Thanks again.
