I wonder if somebody here could please explain the probate records to me and how they are different from wills; I have found records of wills and sent for copies of them and they have helped massivly in my family tree. However, I have now found 'Probate' matches on ancestry, here is one for example:
SMITH John of Oxton, Nottinghamshire died 22 October 1896 Probate LONDON 17 November to Frank Smith farm bailiff. Effects £272 9s. 8d.
Does this mean that all of that money went to Frank Smith? That would seem odd, as in this case John Smith had many children.
In this particular case, could there be any chance of a will in existance that I could send for or does 'probate' mean that there was no will?
Thanks in advance.
