I don't assume anything. The name could be honoring a friend or even the doctor who delivered the child BUT I do make note of the name as a possible clue to a mother or grandmother's maiden name if I don't know what it is.

In our family we have a Smith Robinson and this was a family name on the mother's side. My mother's middle name is Dunn and this was also a maternal ancestor's maiden name--but this is not always the case. For example, there are many Elmer Ellsworth "surname" out there born near the start of the American Civil War--this is the name of the first Union officer casualty of the war and many babies of Union sympathizers were named for him.
