After eliminating the possibility of using a famous general's name, (Horatio Gates and Israel Putnam were a couple of popular names) or that of some other celebrity, artist, president, etc., I would take a good look at the brothers-in-law of the parents. Meaning the father's sister's husband, or the mother's sister's husband. Or an aunt's husband. It was sometimes done the inverse way for girls; a child might be named for its uncle's wife.
