Just browsing and saw this - sorry am going to make it even more difficult! Scotland is not the only country with the tradition of naming children after grandparents - i.e. 1st daughter after maternal grandma, 2nd after paternal grandma and vice versa. I met an Afrikaans family in South Africa where the two living daughters had exactly the same names because the two grandmas had exactly the same names and they could not refuse the tradition or there would have been a family row! Johanna Elisabeth Magaretha - the second used her second name for daily use but apparently there was no legal hindrance to them both having exactly the same names and this applies to other countries as well. For what it is worth, just to show it can happen.
