I am looking for a professional researcher for Sumter, Clarke, Marengo counties. I am trying to connect my Harper (Robert G. (unknown middle name) to a number of other Harpers in the area, including George Weldon, James, Samuel, Daniel Easley, and Mary "Polley" Harper (wife of James) who died in about 1812. These folks started out in Clarke Co before 1820, seem to have briefly been in Marengo Co and then to Sumter. Contact me if you can travel to several courthouses. Elizabeth Holt

My great grandfather is a dead end before 1910 Census. I have him from 1910-1930 Census, his death date, his soc sec application, his marriage license. But all of it contradicts one another.

1910 his birth is MO TN VA
1920 his birth is MO TN TN
1930 his birth is MO MO MO

Soc Sec App says he was born on 14 Jan 1878 in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois to Franklin Benjamin Dixon & Elizabeth Grigsby. No record of them on any census.

Carl James Dixon aka "Goldie" said he was born in Illinois. He left home at age 12-14 after his father died and his mother re-married. Stated siblings named as Elizabeth, Dana, Albert.

Jackson County, Illinois has no record (delayed or original) for Carl James Dixon born on 14 Jan 1878. I always assumed he had to get a delayed birth record with census and affidavit proof in order to get a social security number.

What do I do now? This IS my name's family line and I'm so frustrated. Any suggestions on where else to find his parents? Should I write to Jackson County, Missouri? Wouldn't the birth certificate have to match the place of birth listed on the SS app? I would think his death record would state only whatever the contact knew and not actual facts. I need some good advice PLEASE.

What do genealogists do?

Hello, I'm Laura Beach (Jean Beach's daughter), and I have questions about pro genealogists.
I don't know if this is the proper forum for this, but if not I don't know where the proper forum is. If there are any pro genealogists reading this (or people who have hired a pro genealogist), please answer some of my questions.

Do genealogists travel to other places and peruse original documents? If so, does this limit them to working only on genealogy of their area? I've seen a list of genealogists who specialize in German genealogy, most of whom live in Utah. I assume they don't want to pass the cost of air travel on to their customers, so do they just use the resources of the FHL? What if they don't find anything? Are they willing to carry on correspondence with people overseas, or do they just tell their customers to do it? Not all customers are confident with a foreign language.

I've heard that genealogists are paid by the hour, but when is the clock running? Of course the time they spend looking at documents counts, but what about travel time? If genealogists do correspondence (which I'm not sure they do), is the clock running when they write and read this correspondence? Thanks.

I have done Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic) research for clients for the last 20 years, and have a great working knowledge of records available from these 5 countries as well as from Northern Germany (Schleswig-Holstein, which used to be under Danish control.

I obtained accreditation in Danish research through the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1982 and in Swedish research in 1986.

The accreditation program was discontinued by the Family History Library in 2000, but is now done by the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen),
and I am on their list of Accredited Genealogists.<<

Compared with genealogists living in Denmark his fees are very reasonable.

I always google people I have contact with in order to check them out.
http://www.google.com/search?
q=%22kim+Melchior%22&num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&filter=0

a good man

Hugh W
Proving Provience

Hi,

Someone recently posted about a photo album found at an aunt's home. Almost no names but quite a few photographers marks (photos appear to be 1870-1910 era and all are by professionals).

This person claims it to be her family line. I believe I can make a very strong case, for 27 out of 30, for it being another family.

The problem is this -
1. In 1992 it was found in the possession of her aunt in California. ("possission is 9/10s..." - I don't care who owns it, I just want to identify everyone. If they can be IDed it could break down some old & tall brick walls). Prior to that all of that family came from Ohio.

2. My theory is it belonged to a woman in Colorado who died in 1913. It seems additions stopped because all photos seem to be pre-1911. When she died 21 immediate family members were in the area, from husband to children to nieces & nephews. Some one must have wanted it. I can track all of them one more generation and many 2 more.

3. This woman believes intersect was above the generation of the woman in Colorado. In other words it went backwards to a cousin or aunt. I've tracked that and the closest the 2 families, at that time, could be were 2nd cousins. Over husband or children ?

4. I've gotten some info from her and have her contemporary down 1 or 2 more generations. Still no intersect.

What I have is definitly a gap of ownership from 1913 to 1992. What I probably have is a gap of 1960s to 1990s.

Any thoughts on tracing an intersect ?

Hopefully,
David

hiring out as a non-professional

I have volunteered on several “free look-ups” lists, because I am happy to help other family historians obtain documents, facts, etc; this providing that it is only a look up and copy with information provided, and not research from scratch.

I am not a professional genealogist with accreditations and certifications, but I am working toward becoming one. I have been my family’s historian for 15 yrs and am eager to begin researching for others.

Would it be unethical to offer my services as a non-professional genealogist for minimal fees while I am seeking my accreditation and certification?

Thanks,
Kristi
I stated that I would be willing to pay for the booklet, but was told by this person that they were not sure as to the cost and would contact me soon. I received an e-mail today stating that a copy of the booklet would cost me $125, plus the cost of copying, but was given no page count other than "a lot".

Is this a fair price for a copy of this book? Should I negotiate? Should I pass on this?

THANK YOU for your responses!

Im trying to start to build my family tree, but its pretty hard when you dont know who goes in there. Im looking for my mothers side of the family. Her name was Sharon Lee Vinson, before she was married. Her parents were, Katherine Clark and Denver Vinson. I know my grandfather Denver died in Florida in 1995. I lost track of my grandmother after that and my mother also. I know she had a sister named Betty Jean and a brother named John Vinson. The last i heard, John was in Wiscousin and Betty was in Florida. If you have any question, you can e mail me at <a href="http://www.melpal2@aol.com" target="_blank">www.melpal2@aol.com Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
