Origin of a mark found on someone's hand

Classification: Query
When transcribing parish records recently, among the Burials in Wimborne 1725 was this:-
'a stranger found dead on the road between Whitesheet and Mannington with a mark on her hand ED16991'
Does anyone have any clue as to what this mark means? Tried Google but nothing relates to it. It is just a matter of interest to us all - we thought it might be an ex prisoner or hospital patient etc but are not sure where to look. any ideas would be appreciated.
