What product to purchase

I have family member that has already done extensive research in the past using Family Tree Maker version 9. Since I will be taking over his files and also creating new search information I am not sure what product to purchase. Family Tree Maker 2012? Will it read FTM version 9? Should I purchase Ancestry.com? Does Ancestry.com include Family Tree Maker? Again would Ancestry.com allow me to utilize he earlier file from FTM9? My computers are all utilizing Windows7. I hope I am not wasting anyone's time with my ignorance of this type of software. Thanks in advance for assistance.

I dont know if its considered spam or not. He just tells me that he saw my query on Ancestry on my surnames and then mentions books that I guess they carry at this History Book corner and suggests I check them out. Since most of the books he mentions I already know that my family is not included in them I dont need the emails and would prefer to do my own looking. Would you consider this spam or just a pain to deal with.? I have not recieved any from him today, So maybe my emails to him finally got thru and they took note of it. Sometimes you just dont know what to do.

Thanks for answering.
Sue

If Andrew Kaufman has posted spam on these message boards, you can report the abuse. If he's just trolling for surnames, I'm not sure there's much you can do except perhaps report him to the Better Business Bureau or something. You can try reporting him to Ancestry since that's how you seem to have been targeted.

I didnt sign up for this site and it is using ancestry.com as a way of trying to get me to sign up for it. I want this to stop any idea how to make them stop. I have sent them several emails over the past couple of days and they still keep coming about 4 or so times a day.

Sue

Good day!

I have a personal website and would like to share my family tree on the website, complete with clickable names and etc. The only software I know of that allows what I'm looking for is GreatFamily 2.2, however it hasn't been updated since 2004. That makes me a bit leery.

Would any of you happen to know of any software that I can use to export my family tree to HTML format, or flash maybe, so that I can upload it to my personal site?

Thanks...

You might be able to obtain a microfilm from a local LDS Church Family History Library. They may be able to order films with the indexes as well as the genealogical clippings themselves. You can check what is available at familysearch.org - go to the catalog and type in keyword "Boston Evening Transcript".

I sent an email to Ancestry about six months ago asking the same question. I was told that the items on each site were still separate entities. This was a big disappointment, as I am an Ancestry World Member and do not see spending ANOTHER fee for a site that is owned by the same company. I do know that I had found some data on genealogy.com long ago that has not been found anywhere else online.

As far as a personal preference, familysearch.org is the best free info site out there by far.

First I would scan them so you don't have to handle them again.

Once scanned place each into its own acid free plastic bag then place the acid free bags into an acids free storage box and put it on a shelf where it's away from direct light, humidity and heating and cooling sources.

Acids free bags and boxes arent expensive and you can get them at an art supply store.

I was using Theodolite, a surveyor type app for the iPhone, to record "Benchmark Recoveries". Now applying it to documenting my headstone recoveries. I also supplement the headstone picture with two or three orientations photos. Theodolite imports the GPS, time and date and inclinometer data and overlays the photo just like a "heads up display". High tech meets the headstone. Generations down the road will be able to relocate the headstone without the caretakers help.

I've had good luck with GenealogyBank - but remember,it's mainly old newspapers, not vital records. So if the poster who was unhappy with it was expecting to find vital records, of course he/she would be disappointed.

Check to see their list of titles, to see if the papers you need have been added. (Even if they have, there is, of course, no guarantee that news of your ancestors appeared.)

You might do the 30-day trial for $9.95 to see if it's useful to you. If you do, make sure it's cancelled after that period, and that your credit card is not charged for a renewal.

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply again to your question.

This is the easiest way I've found to find the forms you are looking for. On the Ancestry.com home page put your cursor on search, a drop down window will appear, click on census & voter lists, click on U.S. Federal Census Collection. On the right hand side of that page scroll down to where you see "More help". Under that heading click on blank census forms. There you will see a list of various forms and work sheets.

Some of the same forms are also available on Rootsweb.com. Other Genealogy sites also have forms you might like. I've often Googled "Genealogy Forms" or "Free Genealogy Forms" (or worksheets). Some sites have really nice tree forms you can fill out. I've seen some shaped like trees with branches and some spread out in circles or even fans. I know a gal who enlarged the tree-shaped one to a large poster size. And when she finished filling in the names and other info she framed it and has it on her wall.

Now, to finally answer your original question , "What is a source summary?" According to Ancestry.com a "Sourc Summary provides quick reference to information and sources you have found for a particular family."

I'm sure you've probably found the answer to your question, but I thought I'd better try to answer it anyway.

Good Luck with your searching,
Mysti

I just downloaded the Family Tree App from Android Market. It is supposed to make Ancestry.com work on an Atrix 4G. Most of the text is in Chinese. It refused to accept my Ancestry password (which I typed correctly). You can't ask to have the password sent unless you can read Chinese. I tried to enter my name and gender. It refused to let me change male to female. If you're a Chinese speaking man you're in good shape. Otherwise it's pretty useless. I'm not a computer novice, but can't get this turkey to work. At least it was free and easy to uninstall.
