You didn't mention years or names, but you might try the free newspaper site, www.fultonhistory.com it contains some NYC newspapers and you might find an obit. It is searchable - exact, all words, boolean, etc. Don't know for sure about the NYC papers, but the "rest of the state" newspapers are as early as 1830's.
