I'm pretty good at tracking down 3rd & 4th cousins here in the USA. I have lots of tools to help: Online Newspaper Archives (GenealogyBank, NewspaperArchive), Ancestry.com's city directories, yearbooks, etc. 1940 census, Online Obits, SSDI, the list goes on and on.
My sister-in-law's grandparents emigrated from England ca. 1910. I have used the UK census and FreeBMD to locate various siblings, some of whom emigrated and some of whom stayed in England. I have tracked their families up to the 1911 census and in some cases to the early 1980s via FreeBMD. But I stop there. Every order to the GRO costs me ~$15 and provides only limited information, so I want to minimize them.
I was wondering if there are similar tools to any of those I mentioned for the US in UK? In particular are there collections of indexed online newspapers, online obits, etc? Are obits published and as informative in England as they are in the US? Just looking for suggestions.
