Looking for any information about Frederick, Jacob or John Schober(Shover or Shobert) who came to Luzern Co. PA by 1790. They left the area by 1847 and migrated West. I want to know where in PA they were prior to settling in Sugarloaf, Lucern county. Any information is appreciated.

Hi Ann. I'm descended from the Mace family who were living in Luzerne County (moved there from Dutches/Columbia Co. NY) then to Bradford County. My gggg-grandmother was Ellen Mace, born 17-March-1825 at Greenfield, Luzerne Co., PA. Her father was Abraham Mace, born 4-June-1775 at Dover, Dutchess County, NY (s/o Abraham Mace Sr. and Nellicke Dutcher/DeDuytser).

Would love to correspond with you about your Mace research.

Nice to hear from you again! I don't have much on the Maces. Catherine Mace marr Frederick Shobert March 22, 1836 in Sugarloaf, Luzern Co. The church record reads Caterina Mehs and Fredriche Schober. Catherine's birth date is Feb 18, 1818 in NY, d Oct 22, 1904 Clark Co, WA. Her parents were William Jacob Mace, b March 15,1792,d Nov 22, 1862 Luzern Co. and Polly Rebecca Kettner b Nov 19, 1796 & d abt 1870 in Luzern Co. Her siblings were Lucinda, Caroline, William, Joseph and Benjamin. Benjamin came out West after his mother died. Lucinda marr Charles Heater and remained in the area as did William. Don't know about the others. Do any of these Maces connect with yours? Ann

Ann -- I'm wondering from your response if the "Mehs" family name have evolved into the "Mace" spelling in your family, and perhaps the connection may be coincidental. I haven't been able to connect the Sugarloaf MACEs to the Greenfield MACEs, nor do I do know the proximity of Sugarloaf to Greenfield -- which is where my ancestor Abraham Mace and family settled in Luzerne before moving on to Towanda in Bradford County.

My line of MACEs apparently were Puritans who left England for Holland, and then came to New York through New England ca. 1720. They settled in Dutchess County, then "Young Abe" moved to Columbia County NY. From there, the family came to Pennsylvania. Ellen Mace was born at Greenfield PA 17-March-1825, d/o Abraham & Sarah Ann "Sallie" (Algier) Mace. She married Harmon Schrader, s/o John and Catherine (Harmon) Schrader. John Schrader was a Hessian.

That's it for now -- good luck in your search.

The Mehs spelling was in the German Marr. record of Rev. Shellhammer (Frederich Schober to Caterina Mehs 1837 in Sugarloaf). I've never found another record of "my" Maces And although they were married in the Reformed Church,by 1860 they were founders of a Presbyterian Church in Washington Territory...I probably should be looking for Presbyterian records in PA.
Family oral history has them coming from Holland about 1750. I think they were definetly Palatines. Pilgrims went from England to Holland (1611) to American (1620) don't know about the Puritans.
By the way, Fredrich Schober's (Frederick Shobert) parents are Johannes Schober and Catherine Harmon. Catherine was born in NY and I've found one mention that her father may have been a Hessian.
Thank you for your response, I'll keep you posted on any Mace progress.

First of all; I am pulling this off the top of my head, I have some of the information, but have not taken the time to pull it out just yet! My family came from Sugarloaf TWP., Luzerne County, PA. Luzerne County includes Hazelton, Pa but has been down sized since that my Mace Family was there, I last have them there in the 1850 Census. I am not doing a very good job of locating Greenfield though! I do have another Researcher that may be able to fill in some holes. I would love to have some more information on your line. Mine Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother have been very elousive after 1850. I have to wonder if they may have both died, or changed their names? I would really like to find out. Please give me a little more information, and I will get with some others and also look up in my records. Thank You;R. W. Mace

Russel,
My branch of the Mace family is also originally from Sugarloaf! My G-G-Grandmother ,Catherine Mace (marr to Frederick Shobert), was born to William Jacob Mace and Polly Rebecca Ketner on Feb 18, 1818 in Sugarloaf, Luzerne Co. PA. Her siblings were Lucinda, Caroline, William , Joseph and Benjamin. I think Benjamin came West to Washington after his Mother died prbably about 1870. I have no other information on this family other than I've seen the name spelled, Mehs (German Church records), Mase, Maess, and maze.

I have located a Greenfield, TWP. in Blaire County PA. It is West of Hazelton, Pa and a little South. This could offer a migration trail for my Mace's that I have never been able to find! There was a Benjamine there is 1860 Census, with Moses, Aaron, and my George W. Mace.
