The doyles are a hard bunch to track down, william doyle was my grandfather, james senior his father, married to anna burns, I have tried and tried to find out about her but nothing shows up.Growing up i spent time with the Liebels, holidays mostly, they spent time with my aunt. Please keep in touch, Linda

HELEN DRAKE, Laurelton, NY, 1951 - phone book and/or city directory lookup

Is there someone who could find the party below in a Laurelton, NY, 1951 City Directory or phone book and/or could do a lookup for the address given in 1951? If you don't find her but find a Helen at that address in 1951, what was her last name on the offhand chance she may have remarried? This is genealogical research and this party is a clue in breaking down a long-standing brickwall.

Helen Drake living at 138-48 231st Street, Laurelton, Long Island, New York in 1951. She would have been about 64 at the time. There may or may not have been a Charles Francis Drake, (son) born in Illinois about 1908 or Kathleen Anna Drake, (daughter) born in Illinois about 1910 living with her. These are her two children.

I would be grateful for this information as well but it is not that important. What kind of building was at this address, such as an apartment complex, etc?

I only have (immediate) access to HeritageQuest and I've heard Ancestry has better image quality...

MACKEY, Reuben and Lizzie; husband and wife; ages about 40 & 44 respectively; both black; several children are listed in their 1900 census entry: Mary, Annie, Viola, Ellen, Vernon, Ruben (Jr.), George, John and Jessie.

Thanks,
Brian Salmons

Just like the IGI, the GBI is an index not a source, so would only have a snippet of information from the source.
The information in CT Military Records came from the rosters in the office of Adjutant-General in Washington, from what I am reading. There might be more info in the the A-G's Office, as well as at the CT Historical Society which does have in its holdings numerous muster, pay and receipt rolls.
If the GBI shows a birthdate from that book and you are not seeing it in your digital copy, I would have no explanation for that. Did your copy cut off a column of data?

I tried searching their database, by entering my grandfathers name with no luck. I need someone to access the web site, then go to Migrate, then ships, then search under V, then select Victorian, then the year 1907, then click on February 15, and then look on each of the 21 pages for my grandfather's name. I have a suspician he may be on page 12.

Sometimes cemeteries have copies of the obits as well.

His personal description is given in the second listing and shows his age then (Aug 18, 1814) to have been 18.

I don't see anything that would indicate a birth year in the 1740s.
Thanks! But I'm a bit confused.

Is what's actually on p.299 of the GBI, Vol 135 ... only this spare index-like info and reference to yet another book? (i.e. to page 161 of the 169-page "Records of Ct. Men who served in the War of 1812. Hartford, 1889."?

I already have (downloaded from Google Books) a three-part, 1000-page book published in Hartford in 1889 ("Connecticut Military Record, 1775-1848") that lists CT men who served in the (Part I) Revolutionary War, (Part II) War of 1812, and (Part III) Mexican War. Lyndes' two periods of service in the War of 1812 are noted on p. 161 of Part II of this book ... but there's no indication of any 1740 birthdate.

I wonder where the birthdate comes from or is shown.

-- Mike in San Jose

Can anyone with access to Ancestry.com do a lookup for me, please?

I've found a search-result citation in the Genealogical Biographical Index (Vol 135, p.299) that says a Lyndes Pettibone was born in CT in 1740.

I have an ancestor Lyndes Willis Pettibone for which, despite the unusual name and many Pettibones in early Connecticut, I've not been able to find his parents.

I have him in Brooklyn in the 1840s & early 50s (He was a clockmaker), marriage to Hannah McDermott in 1846, the birth of their two daughters (Emma and Fannie in 1847 & 1852, respectively) and the family's move to Alabama in the mid-1850s). I know all the later descendants.

His age on the 1860 census in Alabama would put Lyndes' birth at about 1813. But I also have info on a Lyndes Willis Pettibone serving as a musician 1813-15 in the War of 1812. Maybe there's a father-son with the same name?

If indeed the GBI citation is correct, maybe there are even three generations of this unusual name? Or some mistakes/typos in the dates?

Hopefully the GBI article can shed some light on Lyndes Pettibone and his family.

Many thanks for any assistance and/or tips for further research.

-- Mike in San Jose
