It may help to begin with what type of information you are looking for, i.e. birth records, death records, census info, voting records. Ask your mom if she remembers her grandmother and if she remembers her funeral, wedding, etc.
If she has no answers, try your oldest living relative from that side of the family. Once you have a place of death, and approximate date, you can go directly to the funeral director or grounds curator and find all sorts of cool stuff. Also, the newspaper will always have obits... especially if the death was surrounded by tragedy or unusual circumstances... even back then.
