Why am I not finding any marriage certificates?

Ok, I'm new to the site and new to geneology in general. I've made unbelieveable headway on this site (I knew by word of mouth back to the early 1900s but have now gotten back to the early 1800's on some branches) but I am curious about why I'm finding NO marriage certificates. These would make my life MUCH easier since my family has one of the most common Irish and English surnames (and first names) on the planet.
Any ideas?
