I've been trying to research my relative who lived roughly from 1846-1905 named John Aiken. He died before my grandfather was born and his wife named Mary Aiken died a few years after my grandfather was born. I was able to find them in the 1880 and 1900 US Federal Census Records.
Their ages kind of fluctuate, but the records do show they both came to the US in 1860 from Scotland. It also appears they were married between 1872 and 1873. John's tombstone reads 1848-1905, so I am taking 1848 as his actual date of birth, even though on the 1900 Census it is listed as 1846. and the 1890 Census it implies 1851.
I am going to send some requests to the state vital statistics archive to get Mary's death certificate and there is a library that keeps microfilm of the 1905 death registers for John. I also plan to head to the local library to see if anything in Mary's obituary can be of help.
Can anyone think of any other sources? I basically am looking for the name of John's dad (as a starting place for across the pond research) and Mary's maiden name.
On the 1900 Census they were both marked as "Not" under date of naturalization.
I believe one of these could be him, due to the age on one record and the arrival on the other. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...
