NEW SURNAMES

Hi,

Would someone please let me know who/how I contact to ask for a new surname to be added to the list of surnames. I would like the surname DELPRADO added to the list. My forebears with this surname are found in NSW Australia from as early as 1817, when NSW was a penal colony.

Manuel Delprado, born Spain, came free on "Dick" departing Cork, Ireland 3 April 1817, arriving Sydney 3 Sept 1817, married Ellen Casey came free on same vessel. Marriage by banns 7 October 1817, Sydney NSW Australia. I am a descendant this couple's son James Delprado born 1821, married 1 July 1845 to Elizabeth Australia Brown.

I am in contact with other descendants, and would like to have a messageboard with the surname DELPRADO for others to put messages on in anticipation of finding further descendants, or better still, forebears of Manuel Delprado.

Many thanks for reading this message.

Cheers from the Land Down Under,

Lisbates

Or is it just two or so generations at a time? And also, why is it, if i click on me to start the tree, my own son doesnt show up under me automatically?

I'm trying to find the father of my great great grandfather John A Thacker born in 1863 in Pulaski County Kentucky to Mariah Thacker born around 1837. She had John out of wedlock and the only other info I have his that his dad's last name is Hines and they are all from Pulaski County Kentucky. When doing a search there were just too many Hines' in the county so I couldn't narrow it down to any one person. Anyone have ideas for my finding this information??

Thanks!!

Adding information from family trees

While it is very exciting finding information about your family, I would suggest that we all look closely at that information. I have come across a few family trees that are somehow related to myself and family.(barth, foden, Gelston and many more)

The problem is that they been uploaded with very wrong information. So far more then a couple of the trees have either my grandfather, father, brother or myself listed by the wrong name totally (ok that happens) but the birthdate should have been a dead giveaway when said person was born in 1619 and suddenly was either married to some one born in 1900's or had a child in the 1900's

Please look and make sure that the dates jive. It is a bit disconcerting to discover that i was born in 1619 not the late 1950's ;)

Trying to get organized and use the Ahnentafel numbering system to mark on my records/files. Would it be better for me to combine both mine and my husbands family lines together with my daughter as the first person, or have two separate lines, my husband and his line with him as number 1 and me with my line as number 1? If I am thinking straight I would think combining them would be so much easier to keep track of all these fils? Would appreciate any help! Thanks.

I read your messages often and am amazed at the amount of knowledge shared between contributors. I am trying to track my family's NA heritage and am struggling with the process. My mother told us on several occasions that we (her children) were 1/16th Cherokee on her side ( her father had what I call the Indian look, straight coarse hair, prominent hooked nose, no facial hair and high cheekbones). I have traced back to where I believe the NA blood should be but can't seem to find any proof. Can you offer any suggestions?
>
> My suspected NA ancestors are:
>
> Joseph W Jenkins b Sep 1855 Wilson County TN who married 1 Oct 1873 in Smith County, TN
> Lutitia B Enochs b Nov 1855 TN
>
>
> or
>
> William D Crump b May 1856 Nashville, TN who married on 1 May 1878 in Nashville, TN
> Anna E Morgan b Dec 1855 Wilson County, TN d abt 1937 probably in Nashville, TN
>
>
> Any directions, suggestions or assistance who be appreciated.
>
> Kim Garrett
> Franklin, TN
> garrettenterprizes@comcast.net
> 615-306-7207

I am trying to continue my fathers family tree and am stuck where to go next. I know Charles Henry Williams was born about 1870 in Hanley,Staffordshire,England. He married an Elizabeth who was born about 1874 in Stoke Upon Trent according to the 1901 census. She had her first child in 1899 called Dorothy. I don't know where to look next to find Elizabeths last name and the marriage date. I have looked at the various years from about 1890 until 1900 but have found nothing that relates to each. In the past I have lucked out by following the census as the older parents sometimes come to live in the household but 1911 census is not available.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am fairly new to this so if it sounds stupid sorry but I need some advice. I recently sent for a marriage certificate and was told I had my facts wrong and that if 2 people were married the vol and page numbers would be the same. So why can I not find the marriage details of somebody who I have all of the facts of. i.e. I know my Great Great Grandfathers name and date of birth etc and seem to have found his marriage details but when I put in his wife, whose details I know also, I cannot find her marriage record? I would greatly appreciate any advice because although I have read all of the info and listened to Tony Robinson I am no nearer to understanding!!! Thanks in advance.

Helpful hint for any newbies

I've been researching our families for two years this month. We started with 20 names (other than our own) and just recently topped 5,000. I wasted a GREAT deal of time because I was hung up on spelling. I had no problem with my own surname, which was ARMSTRONG, nobody ever does anything to that. But when we started working the Irish names horrible things started happening. At last count we had 27 spellings for Holleran! Initially, if the name wasn't spelled the same I assumed (oh! how pained I am to recall this!) it was a different family. If the name sounds the same or similar, collect info on it, especially if the time and place are about right. Even the learned men 100 years ago had limited spelling capabilities, especially when the person giving the name was illiterate and didn't recognize it was being spelled incorrectly. To prove a point: I just called a newly found cousin (a real cousin I didn't know I had). He had been to the town in Ireland from when our Holohan relatives came and he went into a department store named "Holohan's" to inquire about people by that name in the area. He was told there were no such people. When he pointed to the sign, the man said, "Oh, that's (phonetically) Hulihn, not Holohan." Question: If you had heard Hulihn, how would you have spelled it?

I have a second hint. Go ahead and listen to those family legends about what happened to your ancestors. But my grandfather 'who came from Canada as a young boy' didn't come from Canada! He was born in NY, as was HIS father, and his grandfather. I'm still not sure where the gr-grandfather came from. Thus far, not a single legend has been proven. Happy hunting. This is a great way to occupy your time. You'll meet some wonderfully helpful people along the way.

Questions on Birth Certificates

I'm doing some genealogy research on my family and I came across some Birth Certificates for someone in my family and I wanted to ask some questions about them.

There is one birth certificate for this person dated about two weeks after the birth. The date signed is about a week after the birth and the the date received by the local Reg. is the day after that.

I found a second birth certificate for the same person dated about four months after the birth date with "date signed" and "date received by local reg." about four months after the birth date as well. Different dates than the first one.

Would it be usual to have different dates for these on different copies?

Also the attendants are different people on the different copies although I think both were doctors in the town. Both certificates say 1 attendant but have different names and signatures for that one.

Would different copies list different attendants?

The second certificate has a number over the line that says "child" and the first one does not have a number there.

One thing I noticed is the second certificate has a 1-N and a three digit number on the "parents" line. The last number is a one.

The first certificate is very faint with the 1-n and a three digit number but it looks like the last two are zeros which are not the numbers in the second certificate.

Would this mean anything if they were different numbers on the Parents line?

The whole thing looks very sloppy with them mistaking a G for a six and an eight for a nine on the birth number so it may be typos in some areas.

Would any of these things question the validity of the information on the birth certificates? Is this normal for Birth Certificates to be this way?

Thanks,
Brian

I'm trying to find resources to guide me on proper correspondence etiquette for writing to varying end sources.

Actual writing correspondence is a lost art almost, and I'm not sure where I can find what I'm looking for, or even where to start.
I'd like the basic etiquette for writing to relatives requesting information, as well as writing to governmnent and independent agencies (newspapers, organizations, etc.) on data searches/requests.

Hello..

I've found some fascinating information on one of the ancestors I'm researching. I'm learning to validate my sources, but the notes here have stumped me.

Can someone explain how I can validate some of this information?

I tried to search on the LDS call number but had no luck.

Also, searching news articles always seems to pull up any article with the word 'miles' in it!

==========

BIO:Manoah Miles was the son of David Miles and Rachel Lewis both of whom
died in Jefferson County, Indiana in 1833 during a cholera epidemic.
In th LDS files call# 0599055, Lois Myer has Manoah born in Shelby Co,
Ky. but other sources say Franklin Co.
On August 31, 1893 in the"Russell Record" of Russell, Kansas the fol-
lowing is found..."Death of Manoah Miles."
"Manoah Miles, one of our oldest citizens, died about noon last Fri-
day, aged 75 years and 2 months. His health has been growing feeble for
some time and his daeth was not unexpected. He had given a good deal of thought to
canal navigation and had clearer and more practical ideas on that sub-
ject then we ever heard from any other person or source. If he had
possessed plenty of means, and been granted a few more years of life
he might have solved that problem.
Mr. Miles was born in Kentucky 6/25/1818.
Why am I not finding any marriage certificates?

Ok, I'm new to the site and new to geneology in general. I've made unbelieveable headway on this site (I knew by word of mouth back to the early 1900s but have now gotten back to the early 1800's on some branches) but I am curious about why I'm finding NO marriage certificates. These would make my life MUCH easier since my family has one of the most common Irish and English surnames (and first names) on the planet.

Any ideas?

My grandma Mary Knapps mothers name was Nellie from Michigan, but I have no clue what her maiden name was or who her first husband was.

On my fathers side I got Great Grandfather Harley Blackmer married to Wilma Sims. I have no idea what Wilma's parents names are nor can I find Harley's parents.

What is my next step?

I have found this in the 1880 census with my ggg uncles daughter and her last name at the time was Mc Clellan and then I found it again in the 1900 census but her last name had changed to Yost same as my ggg uncle. Just wondering if anyone out there had any idea what in the world the Ad. Daughter would mean??? This one has me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, hope someone can help, I'm quite new to this site.

I want to order some Marriage Certificates and I understand I need to find GRO Index References for these. The site where you order them lists this site as one of the places you can view the GRO Indexes, but I can't find where they are

I have found a marriage record of 16 May 1846 in Kilwinning Scotland for Peter Stewart (aka Stegward?), b. 1825 England to Catherine McCartney b. 1826 Kilwinning, Scotland. How in the world can I figure out where in Blue Blazes a guy named Peter Stewart (of all names) was born in England????? Is this something some of you can figure out? I swear, everybody in Scotland and England in those days all had the same names!!! I want to bang my head against a wall. Can someone out there look this up...and actually find something?

My impression: Imposing edifice with large offices fronted by large counters behind which many people are busy doing the work of the people. I know there is lots of great information in there, but how to retrieve it?

Do courthouses have a room with card files, indexes, drawers, books and stacks of records that one can just browse? Or do you have to submit a form with as much detail about what you are looking for and depend on the diligence of a clerk to find it?

Please give me some pointers on preparing for my first visit to the county courthouse.

Thanks.

Hi, I'm brand new to Family Trees and don't know if this is the right place to ask but here it goes;

Should step-children be included in my tree? If so, how should it be noted. My wife's son, i feel, is part of my family so should at the very least be mentioned but how to do so.

What are the conventions for this or where should I look to find out?

Thanks

Accuracy of information?

I have just recently begun to trace my family tree. I don't know much about it, I got a month subscription to Ancestry.com. I traced one little branch quite a ways and am pretty confident in what I found...to a point. I then start finding inaccuracies, such as, a person was born in 1737 and then their parents were born in 18xx which is impossible. It's hard to verify information when there are so many people that copy other people's trees.

I traced a line back a ways and then found some of the people on One World Tree. The tree they had on there just kept going and going and going. It was almost entirely full with no blank spots. I finally stopped in the 900's. How can this be? I would like to believe I could trace my family back that far but I just find it hard to believe. How does One World tree compile this information?

I am doing research on my Great Grandparents and have hit a total dead-end. This is what I have so far, but can find nothing further on either of them.

I have confirmed (this is the only thing CONFIRMED)that Benjamin Johnson was in fact the first postmaster in Nolia, OK between 1912 and 1920, but I can find nothing about their marriage or either of their parents. I've been told the courthouse in Paducah burned at some point and all records were lost.

Benjamin Franklin Johnson DOB 2/22/1860
Nolia Alice Mangham (Mangrum or Mangum) DOB 10/20/1863 Paducah, Kentucky, also told that her father's first name was John.

They met and married 4/5/1881 Paducah, Kentucky

Traveled by wagon to Oklahoma Territory where Nolia taught school to Indian children. The town of Nolia, Oklahoma was named for her.

I do hope someone can offer some advice or direction for me to take. Thanks! Bobbi
My Grandmother MAUD ELLEN CASEY was born on 21st July 1911. On birth cert her mother is registered as JENNY TURNER, a domestic servant of 38 Chingford Road, Walthamstow, Essex.
My Grandmother grew up with a SARAH DYE ( nee Turner ), and the family have always presumed that she is my Grandmothers mother, but the birth cert did not come to light until she died in 2002. My mother always thought she knew that her mother was hiding something, but never spoke about her childhood. We have deduced, obviously, that JENNY TURNER is the birth mother. I do not know where to start finding her. My Grandmother was born in 13 Union Road, Leytonstone, leyton, which was a workhouse run by the West ham Poor Law Union. It was for the chronically sick, the homeless and destitute. I really need help finding her.

I have an original marriage certificate from 1894 of my Great Grandparents, which states that my Great Grandfathers fathers name was JOHN. I naturally used this as my starting point on Ancestry last year, well you would, wouldn't you ?

However, on obtaining a copy my Great Grandfathers birth certificate, I found that his father was in actual fact called GEORGE. Furthermore, GEORGE died in 1867 some 27 years BEFORE his son would wed.

Anyone else had such problems?

Anyone offer an explanation ?

Help with SS-5 form

I just received a computer form with info that was on my uncles SS-5 (application for SS card) form and am a bit confused.. am hoping someone can help me with the codes. First of all, from what I understand, if they do not have a record of the persons death.. they do not send out the info.. is that correct? So, since I got this info, am I to assume they have his death on record.. and if so, why can't I find him in the SSDI? Sorry, am asking questions I should ask SSA.. but you know what fun it is contacting them. So, if anyone has already been thru all this, would appreciate input. I am also having trouble understanding a couple of the codes. They give a list with meanings but not for the code CLD.. then they have the code CYD that means date records established on SSA's Internal files (which in this case, is 16 years after the CLD date).. also read it is a date when a new card was applied for and sent out. I am just so lost here.. lol. Any input anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to research the male side of my family to find out where our last name came from. I've managed to trace back to my great-grandfather, but I can't find anything beyond him.

The problem is that we have a very common last name, Williams, and it seems that our family was not very original with first names because my great-grandfather and his siblings all had very common names (Louis, John, Harry, Lily, Carolyn).

I have all of the information on my great-grandfather, his full name, date and location of birth, date and location of death, etc. However, I can't find anything on his parents. The last census I found him is, he was already married and on his own, which was 1910. It lists both of his parents as being born in New York, but beyond that I cannot find any other information.

I tried to see if I could get a copy of his birth or death certificate hoping that it would list his parents' names, but on the request forms, they want me to supply his parents' names on the form.

Any other suggestions on how/where I might look?

Thank you.

Finding daughters possibly "lost" due to marriage

I'm researching what happened to three swedish siblings and their children that emigrated to Minnesota during 1872-1886:

One of them are Carrie Andersson (born Karin Matsdotter) born 1855, emigrerated 1882.

My family have envelopes plus a photo from William C Anderson, the son of Carrie Anderson. the envelopes are stamped in Burtrum, Swanville and the photo is taken in Upsala.

Whith the help of these old letters and Ancestry.com I have found

Carrie and her son William in Elmdale, Co Morrison.

However, Carrie had two other children, Emma and Anna M. I have found them

for instance in 1895 census:

In 1910 only William and Anna M lives with Carrie in Elmdale, but in 1920, 1930 only Carrie and William live in Elmdale:

Can anyone help me with these questions?

1. What is the best way to locate daughters that probaly have been married and thereby had their surnames changed?

2. It looks like William C (carl) lives alone with his mother in elmdale 1930. Assuming he died whithout getting married, how do I find the heir/beneficiary to his farm?

3. Can you help me find Emma and Anna M?

Most thankful for your help

regards

Thomas Dahlman

Hi,

Is it possible to create a Gedcom export of a public family tree? I've found a tree with many of my ancestors and it would save much manual copying.
Am I correct in saying that Gedcom only copies text so any historical records that are attached to members will not be copied?
Is there a way to copy a person from a public tree into your own Ancestry tree so that the sources and historic records also transfer?

Thanks,

Richard

Who Am I?

Who Am I?

I started out calmly, tracing my tree,
To see if I could find the makings of me.
And all that I had was Great Grandfather's name,
Not knowing his wife or where whence he came.
I chased him across a long line of states,
And came up with pages and pages of dates.
When all put together, it made me forlorn,
Poor old Great-Grandpa had never been born.
One day I was sure the truth I had found,
Determined to turn this whole thing upside-down.
I looked up the record of one Uncle John,
But then found the old man to be younger than his son.
Then when my hopes were fast growing dim,
I came across records that must have been him.
The facts I collected made me quite sad,
Dear old Great-Grandfather was never a Dad.
It seems that someone is pulling my leg,
I'm not at all sure I wasn't hatched from an egg.
After hundreds of dollars I've spent on my tree,
I can't help but wonder if I'm really me.

Author Unknown

For whatever reason, the birth record of my grandfather cannot be found by WV Vital Records. I know when and where he died, but my grandmother and her children (including my mom) do not know the names of his parents. Given that, what are the chances the death certificate lists his parents' names?

I mean, do they get this info. from the family or do they get it from somewhere else? He died in another state from where he was born, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Surname Board or Location Board ?

I'm just wondering if others have more luck posting to a Surname board or the Location board. For instance, if I am researching the Bruhn family in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, should I post the query to the Bruhn surname group, or the Wayne County, Michigan group? I've considered cross-posting to multiple groups, but that seems excessive. So I'm just wondering where my query may best get a response. Any suggestions?

I have been using my email address for many years and recently I cannot send or receive email. I had a problem in which hundreds of spam messages were entering my inbox. I reported this to the local network BT Ireland but there was no responce from the. I sent most of the spam mail back to the spammers but it appears BT Ireland has blocked my email address simply because I objected to receiving this spam. I was wondering if someone in BT had sold my email address to those spammers. I took all the action possible including entering spammers in 'Mailman' which is a service advised by BT. I understood that by using the Mailman system that spammers would be blocked from sending messages to my inbox but this did not happen. Could anyone please advise as to what went wrong just because I objected to receiving spam?

Need to locate bio. father....adopted

I was adopted. I am trying to locate my birth father & family, who from my understanding, doesn't even know about me. He was born in PA state & had a sister named Mary & we think a brother, but not sure of name. He would have been born around 1927. His name is Phillip Anthony Penna & he was Catholic. He married my mother, Nancy Helen Whitener in Gaffeny SC state around 1944 & lived in NC state. My mother was not Catholic. When his parents found out, he went back to PA state to talk to his family & never came back. Around 1951, a father from the Catholic church came to my mother & interviewed her, to see if they had gotten married in a Catholic church because he was going to remarry & the Catholic church did not recognize my parents marriage. My mother doesn't remember his birthdate or birthtown. Also, in NC, all adoptations are sealed so I can't access my birth certificate. I have searched on this web site under birth, marriage & death, census & newspapers. I'm new at this & not sure what to do next. I really like to find him, assuming he is still living, & talk to him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need advice on tricky search

I have a real challenge here.. may even be impossible. I'm trying to locate my father's service records from WWII. He didn't like to talk about his military service, and he passed away before I was old enough to know that this stuff was important and I should ask some questions. Here's what I know:

He was born in Mexico in 1925, but grew up in San Francisco. Somewhere along the way he became a citizen, but I don't know when.

He told me that he enlisted in the military and that he had to lie about his age to do it. That would mean (I think) that he enlisted before August 3rd, 1943, when he turned 18.

He flew in bombing raids over Germany, and was part of the D-Day invasion force, so I think he would have been part of the Army Air Force.

He was injured and spent some time in miliary hospitals, but I don't know where or when. After his discharge he attended college courtesy of the GI Bill.

My mother made several attempts to find his records after he died, so she could get him a veteran's headstone, but was unsuccessful. The fire at the St. Louis records facility took out all the Rs, apparently. I have tried many times over the years myself, with no luck. I have just been searching the enlistment data here at ancestry.com, and can't find him there either.

I am beginning to think that he may have used a ficticious name along with a fake age, which may make finding him impossible. I do have his social security number, but that may have been assigned after his military service.

I tried contacting his last employer, thinking that his security clearance files might have contained info about his military service, but it has been too long and those records have been destroyed. I also contacted UC Berkeley, thinking they might have some identifying number in their records, but they have been searching for over two years now. Last time I checked they said their old records are a real mess and that my question prompted them to get some students working on sorting through them, but clearly it's slow going. I'm not counting on them coming up with anything.

So... is there anything else I can do? Or am I chasing a dead end?

thanks,

janine

PS When I previewed this post all the line breaks were gone, so it looked like one big blob. I hope it doesn't get posted that way, but if it does, please know that I did type it in a little nicer than that!

I want to find more information about my ancestry on my mom's side but there is very little information. She was adopted at age 6 after both of her parents died. Subsequently, her birth certificate was reissued and, as a result, her birthparent's names are no longer on it. She does not know what her parents first names are so how can I go about finding them?

Rumor: I'm the Gov's granddaughter

My mother was adopted in 1939 from a Salvation Army home for women in Tampa Florida. I don't know where to start to get the birth certificate info. Shortly before my Grandmother ( who adopted my mother) died she gave me this precious info.:

1. I am related to Gov. Robert Gregg Cherry (he had no children of record), so he had a mistress perhaps??

2. My mother was born "Faith Anne Cherry" changed to Merrill Anne Mundorff" after/during adoption

3. A Dr. Knott was involved in the "transaction" and my mother is listed as being born at Tampa General Hospital, even though it was actually the SA Women's Home.

I am open to all suggestions as to how to get started in finding the true story. Seems intriguing!

thank you!

Martha

Recording name by which person was actually known

What is the best way to record the name a person was actually known by.

I have a lot of family members who weren't known by their first name. Generally they are known by a middle name, nickname or a totally unrelated name.

For example:

1. one relative was officially named after 3 people who were all still alive when he was little, so everyone called him by a 4th name which was totally unrelated to any of his 3 officially recorded names. His son was given that 4th name as his middle name. If I don't record the 4th name prominently on his father's record then the connection is lost as to why the son's middle name was given to him.

2. some relatives who were always known by their middle name (in fact their first names came as a bit of a surprise).

3. some who were known by a nickname that is obviously derived from a first or middle name or seems to bear no relationship at all to any of their names.

I'm using ancestry.com to record the family tree. Does it go in as part of the person's name on their profile and therefore shows up in the family tree or is it added as an event or story? What should I do?

Several of my ancestors married cousins so a number of lines go back to 1 set of people. On the people lists these common ancestors are listed multiple times. I tried creating a Project to print lineage and family group sheets but the program says it has encountered a problem and cannot generate pages. I think the problem is because of the multiple common names.???? Any words of wisdom?

Adopted &Found birth family, now I am trying to do our tree but stuck in one place.

I was adopted and discovered that my birth mother was also. I was able to go back on my birth father's side for the most part, but I am hung up on my birth mother's side of the tree. Her mother's name may have been Inez B Hardy born 1915 in Petersburg NE and married to Floyd Marker ( my maternal grandfather). I think the marriage may have ( It is an educated guess from a birth cert I obtained for one of my mother's sisters ( she never knew her....the children were seperated through adoption and are deceased) in 1932 because it lists her as being a homemaker for 2 years prior to the child's birth. On the sisters death certificate the mother was missing, so that was hard to track down. I am only assuming that my mother and her sister ( Louise Catherine Marker, who died in Everett, WA) had the same mother. Anyhow... On Inez B. Hardy ( Marker?) I am assuming they were married also I can't find any information. Any ideas? I am so new to this. It means everything to my birth mother to know where she came from. I am also looking to put the tree together and find any siblings (who probably are not alive anymore). Thanks ( and sorry to ramble!!)
