It sounds like you're attempting to find living people. This is not the site to do that. You might have better luck using social sites (fb, linkin) and people finders like Veromi.

If you provide a few more details (e.g., where you have already looked), someone may be able to suggest other sources to try. The amount of information available can vary a lot, depending on what state, what the approximate year of birth is, etc. The more details you can provide, the more likely that someone can help you with it.

You could order his death certificate. If he died of complications relating to his condition, it will be listed as the cause of death or supporting cause of death. Sometimes medical conditions unrelated to the death will be listed as well. His exact death date will be included and by 1952, I would imagine his exact birth date would be as well (earlier death records often only listed the age at death).

http://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm

It looks like uncertified copies of death certificates in New York are available to the public 50 years after they were issued so since your uncle died in 1952, you shouldn't have any problems ordering it.

This looks like Samuel Martin Fraze in 1870, this means Joseph and M.E. are probably his parents:

1870 United States Federal Census about Samuel Fraze
Name:	Samuel Fraze
Age in 1870:	4
Birth Year:	abt 1866
Birthplace:	Kentucky
Home in 1870:	Litchfield, Grayson, Kentucky
Race:	White
Gender:	Male
Post Office:	Leitchfield
Household Members:
Name	Age
Joseph Fraze	27
M E Fraze	29
Samuel Fraze	4
M M Fraze	2/12
Hellen Kelly	20
Franklin Kelly	16

And this looks like him in 1880 - his father may be dead but it gives you his mother's name as Mary:

1880 United States Federal Census about S. Martin Fraze
Name:	S. Martin Fraze
Age:	14
Birth Year:	abt 1866
Birthplace:	Kentucky
Home in 1880:	Leitchfield, Grayson, Kentucky
Race:	White
Gender:	Male
Relation to Head of House:	Son
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Birthplace:	Kentucky
Mother's Name:	Mary E. Fraze
Mother's Birthplace:	Kentucky
Household Members:
Name	Age
Mary E. Fraze	38
S. Martin Fraze	14
Mary M. Fraze	10
Henry Clay Fraze	8

So now you know his father was probably Joseph Fraze, born about 1843 in Kentucky and probably died sometime between 1870 and 1880. His mother's name was Mary E. born about 1841/2. He had a sister called Mary and a brother called Henry. In fact, you can narrow down Joseph's death to probably between 1872 and 1880 since Henry was born in 1872. Henry's middle name is Clay - could be a clue to mother's maiden name (sometimes, children used their mother's maiden name as their middle name) but I wouldn't enter that yet.

If you're having trouble finding census records perhaps because you don't know a maiden name or the family moved around a lot and you don't know the parents name so it's difficult to confirm the right family, look for death records which will often tell you the parents names of the deceased. Marriage records may do so as well.

Re: can someone help me find my family members

Are you looking for ancestors or living family members? I have no experience with the latter but as for the former:

Looking at your public tree, it seems you do not know who your great grandparents were (assuming you are the home person in your tree)? There are only two people in your tree who are visible to the public because they are deceased (living people in your tree are displayed to everyone else as "Private") so if you still have parents and grandparents who are alive, I would recommend talking to them (assuming your not estranged and this is your reason for asking - are you looking for your immediate family?) and get as much information as possible. Surely, your living grandparents can give you the names of their parents (your great grandparents)?

Next, it's easiest to explore census records. If you are not a subscriber of Ancestry.com, you should be able to find your grandparents on free census records at www.familysearch.org. Keep in mind misspellings are rife and ages approximate.

Since two of your grandparents are deceased and if their children know nothing about their ancestry, I would recommend your next step is to order their death certificates. It looks like Oklahoma doesn't make death certificates public even after a certain amount of time but grandchildren are eligible to order a certified copy from: http://www.ok.gov/health/Birth_and_Death_Certificates/Death_...

The death certificates should include the names of the deceased's parents, among other useful info.

You can also order birth certificates - however, it looks like your grandparents were born in the late 19th century? Oklahoma didn't start issuing birth certificates until 1908 and it wasn't mandatory until 1917. But the death certificates should get the ball rolling.

If you're looking for your living family, perhaps because you are estranged from them and want to reconnect, I'm not sure Ancestry.com is the right place for it. Some people here might have experience with it but the records you will find here will mostly be for older generations with the intent of researching one's genealogy, not one's living family.

You will need to give us names and dates and where they lived.
If you are looking for people who are still living, you don't want to give their birthdates, etc, but we can give you hints of where to look.

You're asking about how to do this using the ACOM member tree program, correct?

The program enables you to add more than one set of parents, and choose which you "prefer" to display. The key word is display, the relationships are not displayed at the same time. There is no wrong or right way, this sounds like people may still be living in your scenario and you should be sensitive to the living.

-Go to the profile page of the child, F.

-Click "edit this person"

-Click the tab "Relationships"

The display on this page has "J" lists as the father, correct? He is the biological father.

Do you have a biological mother listed? It is your choice whether you want to add this data, which you can do by clicking on the + add mother.

You'll see the system has designated those relationships as "biological".

You can add the adoptive parents by clicking "+ add an alternate father" and "+ add an alternate mother". Since these people are already in your tree, choose *Select someone in your tree*.

Once you add the alternate parents, go back to the *Relationship* page of the child and designate the relationship, by clicking the "Change" link, select *adopted* and save.

You can choose which set of parents you want to display by setting which one you *as preferred*.

If you set the biological parents as preferred, the profile page of the child will display those parents. The profile pages of the biological mother and father will display the child as their child.

If you go to the profile page of either the adoptive mother and father, those will display the child in their list of children.

Where does Michael's death record state he was born and when? If not in the U.S., have you looked for a naturalization record for him? Those records are, sometimes, quite detailed. If he was born in the U.S., then you should look for his birth record in the birth location, depending upon the time period, as well as checking U.S. census records.

You may need to go back to previous generations of your family and document each event (major event--birth, marriage, death) to get more clues that will provide you leads to the previous generation of your family. The records you find will tell you where you should look for more information.

Hi, Thank you for your reply:) I found his son Michaels death cert. from detroit in 1920. It stated his parents Joseph Sielski and Mary Wesolowski all from Pyzdry poland. Ive searched poznan project and found their marriage listed w their parents, but have been stuck there, going on a wild goose chase thinking Im related to ALL the Sielskis I find. LOL, which in a way I am...lol, just not sure which ones exactly! Unfortunately I have no other info. on my family than what I found in the death cert. Next I am going to go to a local LDS family center to see what they might have. Any input is greatly appreciatrd!
Thank you!

Jen

You need to provide a few more details for people to make suggestions about where to look. For starters, are you looking for additional resources IN Poland, or did the family go to the US, UK, elsewhere? Do you know of a religious affiliation?
You may wish to try a list I admin at RootsWeb: SENIOR-NEWBIE@rootsweb.com . You would need to subscribe first and you don't have to be a "senior" to subscribe but the purpose of this list is to help non-techies and seniors who tend to know know less about computers with technical issues in baby steps.

Joan

Right, thank you. I am not so good at the technical side of this. The experts on Roots speak in a language or jargon that is unfamiliar to me. Not their fault but I just can't figure out their answers, so I will probably take it to a computer shop and have to pay a dollop of money to have it fixed. Thanks anyway. (My idea was that if I placed my question on the Newbie board, I might get a reply that was easier to understand).

That's not an Ancestry question, it sounds like a computer question, and it all depends on your operating system, and it's a very easy task.
I assume you're using a Microsoft Windows OS of some kind, and there are instructions all over the place for it, again, depending on which specific OS you have.

Here is the link to a page for Windows 7, but if you're using another OS, like XP or Vista or something, you can easily find them by doing a Google search for "System restore" and you'll get all of the options:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/feature...

Re: Genealogy

Not sure what gave you the impression Ancestry.com would be free. If you're not willing to pay any money for genealogy, you will find yourself at a lot of dead ends. Even if you don't use Ancestry.com, you will still have to pay fees for ordering individual records through the mail.

That said, start with FamilySearch.org - the biggest free records database on the internet.

Ancestry.com does also have some free records collections. This is an old-ish list but it's a start: http://ancestryinsider.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/free-databases... - the suggestion of seeing if your library offers access to Ancestry.com is a good one too.

Be aware that genealogy takes a lot of work - I too started out with the intent of it being a gift. I wanted to make a book of my mom's family history as a gift for her next birthday. About two years later, I finally printed the book but it quickly became outdated as I found more and more information. It's something that is always a work in progress and it may not necessarily be something you can do within a year. Some people have been working on their tree for 20+ years!

Also be wary of other people's trees who may share branches with you - they can be hugely inaccurate! So please don't think that getting info from people who have already done all the work is an easy shortcut.

You don't necessarily need to go to the courthouse in person, you can often order records online or through the mail. However, there is no one central place for this, you will need to find the individual source for each location. Some records come from state level - for example, PA death certificates come from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. You have to fill out a form, mail it off to the DOH with your fee and wait months for them to mail copies back to you. This is a big reason why genealogy can take so long - I waited 6 months for my PA death certificates to come in. Other places may have an online ordering system - sometimes they use VitalChek.

For other records, like marriage records, you may need to go to the county level. Usually, you need to look for the county clerk/register of wills/orphans court - there is typically a page for it on the county website.

There is generally a fee for getting copies of records - it can range from a few dollars to around $30 for each record depending on the source.

Good luck - if you need anymore help, just ask.

You may need a more specific location within Luxembourg but otherwise, you have a good chance of finding a birth certificate with the birth date and birth name. But that's assuming a birth certificate was even issued and assuming it's available to the public. You would have to look into the availability for this specific location.

Remember that official, government mandated birth certificates were not always issued in history - they are relatively modern, mostly introduced in the late 19th/early 20th century depending on the location. However, recordings of births or baptisms (not the same as a birth certificate) by churches or local governments have been around for many centuries. For example, Family Search has a birth/baptism index collection for Luxembourg 1662 - 1840: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1520578 - these are not birth certificates, just birth/baptism recordings. If your date is more recent than this, from the 20th century, there may have been a birth certificate.

You may also find these Luxembourg specific genealogy sites helpful: http://www.familux.org/genres.htm - http://luxembourggenealogy.blogspot.co.uk/

Here he is in the naturalization index at the Chicago Ancestor site
http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/NR/default.aspx

If you click on the line that says "please read before requesting on offline search" it tells how to order a naturalization record. You can also try emailing the Newberry library and asking if they will do a reverse directory lookup for the address from 1935
http://chicagoancestors.org/#tab-tools

Try www.familysearch.org It is a free site, and has many vital records and census records. You can also go to the genweb sites, which often have good data. Just google US genweb + the state you want. Also, public libraries sometimes have genealogy sites with records. If you are not in your own city, you can still go to a local public library and see if they have free access to Ancestry on their computers. If you have a library card for your home community, you can check and see if they offer access to Heritage Quest, which has census records. I can access that site for free from home, with my library card.

I would recommend finding your family in the census first. The 1940 census is the most recent one to be released, so hopefully your Dad was born by then. Once you find him in the census, you can work back to your Grandparents.

Start by writing down everything you know about your family, then list what you need to find out, such as birthdates and places, and marriage dates, etc. Make sure you verify with documents when you can - don't count on other's genealogy to be accurate. Also, you are not going to find your genealogy laid out all nice for you, you will just have to go step by step.

Use these message boards to get information and maybe find other family members. Post on the county where the person lived. If you don't know a county that a city is in, just google it.
Hope that helps. Let us know if you have other questions.

That's great - you are making real progress, one step at a time. Glad to see there is concrete proof that the unfounded speculation above is exactly that, plus now you have a very good idea when Peter was born, since you have his age at marriage.

Do you know of any specific religious affiliation either of them may have had? Is there a chance a church may have a record? If so, I would suggest looking in Cicero first, since traditionally couples more often were married in the bride's home town. Also I would suggest Cicero newspapers for the 4 to 6 weeks after the license date for possible announcements (hopefully something in the society pages, mentioning the couple's parents, rather than just a two line item).

One thing to keep in mind, about the difficulty of pinning down addresses, etc., is that this is during the early Depression years. It would not be surprising if there was a lot of moving around, staying with friends, etc.

UPDATE: using an approximate birth year of 1896 (since he was 34 at marriage), I found a few things that MAY relate to him, and will give you a place to look:

1. Veterans Affairs BIRLS entry, for a Peter Caputo born April 1897: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=p...

2. You will have to have patience about sorting through them (these are from a search, restricted to military, as I thought maybe something would jump out for the World War I draft registration).

Good luck.

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but if you got to a 12th great grandparent in one day, you likely need to start over. The only way that could happen is if you copy every tree you come across, but the member trees are notoriously inaccurate (especially when they claim to go back that far), and I really doubt there is much if any documentation on any of them - just a general "trust me" approach.

You will have a lot more confidence in your results if you start from your own parents and grandparents, and work backwards one generation at a time, adding the census and other records along the way. The problem with just copying trees that have no records attached is that if there is any break in the chain, then you are not really connected to those older generations (or if you are, you will never be able to prove it to yourself). Also, if my own experience is anything to go by, you are also going to find situations that are chronologically impossible (parents younger than "children," spouses born 80 years apart, etc.)

As to crests, etc. - the real truth is that these are not "family" crests. If you read up on heraldry, you will find that there is no such thing as a "family crest" for any family (notwithstanding the colorful clipart littered over the Ancestry trees). You might have fun with a Google search on that subject.

Good luck with your search - but seriously, start with your own immediate family and work backwards, and you will then have a tree you can trust is really about your family.

Update: Here is an official source about UK coats of arms, which explains in more detail that there is no such thing as a "family" coat of arms - they are granted to individuals, and can be inherited only by lineal male descendants of the original grantee: http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/resources/faqs

Is there any other way to get information about my genealogy other than going to the courthouse. I am from Tennessee but I am spending the next several months out West and I am trying to get this information so I can do a family tree for my dad for Christmas. Is there any way to get in over the internet without joining sites like Ancestry?

wow. I don't know if I took advantage of you or if I made your day by giving you something to do. But you helped me out so much and actually made future research so much easier. Thank you! I'm going to Curacao in a month since all the records online are in beta and are only either in Spanish or Dutch which I don't speak. Now I have so much more to go on!

Also, I do have full access.

I haven't been able to find an obit for Pascual Bethencourt.

Do you have full access to Ancetry.com?

Have you looked at all the immigration records for him? Search Pas* B*court. (at least I think they're for him.)

Look at the original scanned records, not just the indexes.

At least one included his mother's name...Another said he was naturalized May 23, 1916.
