Would there be an application if aunt used hubby's SS?

Would my gg-aunt have needed to fill out her own separate application for SS if she was using her husband's SS? On her death cert, it listed her hubby's number with a dash and an A on the end. Does anyone know what this means? She was in a nursing home when she died, and I believe her hubby's SS was paying for the stay. If she had to fill out her own application I wouldn't mind sending off for a copy of it, but I would hate to spend $27 and receive a copy of her hubby's!
