prima vice on german church records

Hi! I've been reading german parish records and 'prima vice' hase been written by a few of the birth records. These records are written in a different format than the other records. I've also seen 'secunda vice' and 'tertia vice'. I'm guessing 'first', 'second', 'third', but what does the whole thing mean? Thanks!

This is written on the inside of a Welsh bible that belonged to my great grandmother. It was given to her in 1912, I have tried the online translators, and they do not make much sense.

Request For Translation - 1895 Suicide Article

Any chance someone out there can translate one or all of these articles? They concern a suicide by pistol of a man named Gustave. He was originally a John Doe but his body was later identified by his brother-in-law. Apparently he had been a patient at the Ward's Island Insane Asylum in NYC, was released as cured and killed himself the day of his release. His residence was 450 Columbus Ave.

I understand the basics of what the articles say but am sure I'm missing some of the finer details.

I'm especially interested in knowing what is said in the New Yorker Volkszeitung article about "1501 1. Ave" as this doesn't appear in the other articles.

These are all scanned from printouts I got from the NY Public Library in NYC. Amazing newspaper collection they have there!

Any help is appreciated.

Vorbemerkung:
In Groß-Umstadt sind die DRACH bereits Mitte des 16. Jhdts in relativ großer Zahl nachweisbar, was in dieser Zeit eine bereits längere Ansässigkeit nahelegt. Sie gehörten zu den ratsangehörigen Familien (Patrizier) und stellten verschiedentlich den Bürgermeister.

Anfang des 18. Jhdts ging Johann Christoph DRACH in die Grafschaft Sayn-Altenkirchen zunächst als Vogt in Bendorf, dann Richter in Friedewald, zuletzt Kammerrat in Braubach. Sein Sohn Henrich August ging als Jäger in die Dienste der Fürsten von Nassau-Saarbrücken und wurde in Lorenzen, Grafschaft Saarwerden ansässig. Seine Nachkommen finden sich im heutigen Saarland.

Die DRACH aus Lohr am Main, auch schon im 15. Jhdt nachweisbar, sind später in Oppenheim am Rhein, in Darmstadt, und im 17. Jhdt nobilitiert, in Altenhaßlau, Branderode/Thüringen, Ellershausen, Lengel-Mühle und Hanau ansässig.

Sie sind wahrscheinlich mit den DRACH aus Karlstadt und den DRACH aus Büdingen verwandt.

Prominentester Vertreter der Karlstadter DRACH, die schon im 15. Jhdt dort als ratsangehörige Familie nachweisbar sind, ist der Theologe Johannes DRACH (auch DRACO, DRACONITES, nach seinem Herkunftsort auch KARLSTADT genannt), der Professor in Marburg, dann in Rostock und zuletzt (evang.) Bischof von Marienwerder in Ostpreußen war.
Vom schon im 15. Jhdt bezeugten Gasthof "Zum Drachen" im badischen Ettlingen stammt eine Reihe von DRACH-Familien, die im Badischen und Schwäbischen ansässig sind. Vielleicht gehören zu ihnen auch die Elsässer und Lothringer Familien DRACH.

Schließlich gibt es im Rheinischen, Köln und weitere Umgebung, verschiedene Familien DRACH, die vielleicht zusammengehören.

In Frankfurt/Main und in Wien gab es außerdem zwei jüdische Familien Drach, die Frankfurter Familie, ursprünglich Bacharach, trug ihren Namen ebenfalls nach einem Hausnamen, und zwar dem Frankfurter Stammhaus der Familie „zum Drachen“.

Need help translating Czech to English

See attached picture...I was able to translate most of my gr-gr grandfather's tombstone, but am stuck on one word.

The top of the tombstone reads: "Zde v {Vunu?} {Vanu?} Odpociva". I know that it closely translates to "Here in ____ lies". Can anyone decipher / translate the word between "v" and "Opdociva". Is it "Vunu" / "Vanu" or something else? I'm having no luck at the Czech to English online dictionaries.

I need translations of a birth record of a great-great grandfather and a marriage record of what I think are his parents. I have attached 2 JPEGs of the records I got from the Drouin Collection from Ancestry.com (French-Canadian Church records from Quebec). I can pretty much get the very basics on the birth record (John Cooney, parents Patrick Cooney and Elizabeth Ward) because it's good print, but the marriage record (Patrick Cooney, Eliza Ward) has me stumped because it's hard to read and my French is basic.

The first attachment is the birth record of John Cooney (right side of the page). The second attachment is the marriage record of Patrick Cooney and Eliza Ward (right side of page). The documents don't have to have every word translated; I'm basically looking for the genealogical information.

Symbology on old chart

I have come across an old descendant chart written in French for one of my ancestors. I can decipher the French, what I can't understand is the lines connecting the generations.

There is no vertical line between the earliest ancestor and the second generation. But the lines between the second and third generations and between the third and fourth generations are dashed. But the remaining generations are solid lines.

The second generation doesn't show a marriage, just a mother with the children taking her surname. Neither does the third generation show a marriage. This time it is a male who would have been 57 when his only child (at least the only one listed) was born.

So my theory is the dashed lines represent illegitimate births. Is this a standard symbology?

I have a book in my posession from 1911 written in Old Spanish that has many Maltese surnames in it with very detailed family tree information including the family crests.

This book was a very limited circulation and I believe the information in it to be very valuable to these families. I have found one person that is willing to translate the book for .10c per word. This would cost me close to 4000 US dollars. If you can translate Old Spanish and are interested in taking this task on please contact me mromanowski01@comcast.net.

The book is very repetitive in the sense that he is describing who begat who for each family. I think that would make it easier to do and I am compelled to share this information with the other Maltese families in the book.

I think I have transcribed most of the words in one of the sections but one word does defeat me.

It reads:

How do I transliterate surnames to Cyrillic?

I am researching primarily the following surnames in Rakacza, Hungary:

Jobagy/Jobbagy or Obagy/Obbagy
Gulyban

The records that I am looking at are mostly in Latin and Hungarian. I am having little difficulty reading those records when I can make out the words. However, the earliest records (from 1777 to 1787) are in a mix of Ukrainian (cyrillic) and Hungarian/Latin. I am wondering if someone can help me figure out how to transliterate these two surnames into cyrillic characters so that I can isolate the records for later translation.

My mother unearthed an antique gold pocket watch with an inscription on it. I believe it is in German, but german/english dictionaries only get you so far. I can't quite make sense of the overall message (especially the number/letter combo in the middle).

Am trying to translate the attached record from the Kirchenbuch for Belum, Germany from 21 April, year 1846.

I think it is a marriage record for Claus Hensch, my great-great-grandfather, to Anna Rebecca Elisabeth Wagener.

I am guessing it says Claus' father was Nicolaus ? and Anna's father was Nicolaus Wagener.

So far I think it reads:

21 April Hensch Claus Sohn Des ? Nicolaus ? ? ?, und Anna Rebecca Elisabeth Wagener, Tochter Des ? ? Nicolaus Wagener ? ? (? ?)

Can anyone help fill in the gaps? I am hoping the other words are towns or occupations.

Please look at the attached JPG and there are 2 names. One form my GG Grandfather, John Dojcak, and the other for my GG Grandmother, Maria ? I'm thinking it begins with "Hosp.." or "Hasp.." I'm not too familiar with Czech surnames. They are from Gajary, Czech Republic. All that is needed is a library card to that library. I think this is terrific considering they cost several hundred dollars to buy. Nome: Beatrice Cirillo MARITATA Palestine possiedi.....What does "maritata" mean here? I thought it meant married, but it's nowhere close. I am doing research on my family in England. I have obtained a copy of a will that is from the 1400's that COULD be one of my ancestors. But since the will is written in Latin, I can't even tell where the will is from or when it was written.

I need some one to just do some minor translating from me and help me learn some of the basic information contained in the will such as the names of towns or counties mentioned, names of children or spouse mentioned and dates.

For some reason, my thread has been removed from the message boards. The subject was a 1825 Will for Vincensius Mohelnicky. I had asked for help in translating a few words on the Will.

Unfortunately, I copied most, but not all of the messages before the messages were deleted. I have the messages up until Feb. 23, 2007. My "Favorites" site in Ancestry.com shows there was a Feb. 28, 2007 message, but I'm unable to read it:

The last message was from "bhhaling" who wrote to say they'd be getting back to me. This was the message I don't have a copy of. Of course, I don't know how to contact "bhhaling" now, and if they wanted to contact me, there'd be no way to do that now that all my messages were deleted.

Why they were deleted, I'm still wondering about. Ancestry.com could give me no good reason why. Perhaps it was because I had attached files to a couple of my posts (scans of parts of the Will where I had questions about).

Anyway, if "bhhaling" is looking for me, I'm here :)

Please see attachments. Any help in interpreting information that could lead to ships name the Norwegian Waage immigrants sailed on, would be greatly appreciated: Sjur Helgesen Fosenvaag on the first line. I can tell that it states he was from Fosenvaag in Avaldsnes, born 15 April 1864 in Avaldsnes. There are two dates on the paper, 1st January 1882 and 13 December 1883. If you can figure out which word might be a ship's name, please let me know. The second paper has the date 10/6/1882. It looks like the name is Johnsen.

Meaning of Welsh word LLWCH

I have been looking at the information on a Welsh Cemetery website, and the word LLWCH appears next to some people's names.
I have consulted a Welsh dictionary and found that this word translates as "dust".
Am I therefore right to make the assumption that these people have been cremated and then their ashes scattered at the burial place of their spouse?

I don't think anyone would be able to help with this as the photocopy is such a poor one. I have done the best I can with it, but it was in the Oxford Record Office and the wills are obviously in a book, and it is the words across the fold which are so dark it is very difficult to read them.
this is the extract from the top of the page, and the words I am querying I have marked with **?*** . The other words are quite clear to read

I have a couple of minor queries in a will which I am transcribing and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions. I am puzzled by what appears to be the word "Lead" in the following extract:

"As to my Body my desire is to have it buried in a deep Grave in St. Margarets Church Yard Westminster underneath the North Window next to the West end of the Abbey as near the Wall as the Dean and Prebends will give leave If I dye out of Town I desire to be carried directly to my Grave in a plain Wainscot coffin covered with thin sheets of Lead? and no other Covering or Inscription or any Ornament to adorn it in a Hearse and four horses and one Mourning Coach to attend it"

I'm also puzzled by the item of clothing in the following extract. My best guess is "Laces" which doesn't seem to make much sense:

"Item I give to Elizabeth Finney if she is my servant when I dye Fifty pound the worst half of all my Cloaths excepting my Laces? Five Guineas for Mourning"

I'm wondering if the writer might have meant a wry little play on words by his usage.

The text:

Taken literally, Mr. Gebhard is expressing his gratitude to those who helped save his movable items from the fire. While this is probably the main intent, I can't help but wonder if there is a little wry joke hidden there.

There was a bar in the hotel though, that....while the public certainly did help save the alcohol from the blaze....well...lets just say that there was noone there to save the alcohol from the thirsty crowd. ;)

Which is why I ask about the use of "thatfrästige." I know "that" by itself means a feat of some sort. Combined together as "thatfrästige" it roughtly means an energetic feat.
But all other references I can find to any "frästige" derivatives either don't make sense....or point to a relationship with "fressen"...which means to consume/devour greedily.

Anyone out there have any etymology knowledge that could help me out with this?

Hebrew/Yiddish translation help - shasee or shasei?

Though I have been trying to help a friend uncover his past, one of my many roadblocks with his Jewish lines include the use of Hebrew or Yiddish in some records. One such record is of a posting in the Jewish Newspaper Hamelitz, where all the index has for comments is "Kloiz Hatchalat Shasee" (or Shasei).

From what I have been able to tell from single word translations (I KNOW it can be totally different when arranged together), is that a kloiz was a synagogue for like-minded people. Often people of a given profession, or all the artisans in town, etc. From what I can tell, Hatchalat means the beginning or to begin. I'm most interested, then, in any definition of "shasee" or "shasei", or, possibly another word that sounds/looks similar that WOULD make sense.

If it helps with the definition, the person mentioned was from the town of Krekenava, in the municipality of Panevezys, in Kaunas Gub, Lithuania, in 1900 and 1902. His surname was Eliash/Elias/Iliash

Is there anything that will translate my work into Polish?

Hello,

I have made contact with a distant relative in Poland. (I'm so thrilled!)

I would like to have the work I've gotten done so far translated into Polish for him. He has already sent me his work which is mostly in English and I would like to do the same for him.

What I have is a genealogy report created with Family Tree Maker. It's 8 pages in length and does not include sources, just facts and notes.

Poltran.com is a great website for simple translations, but not for what I would like to do.

Anyone got any ideas? Inexpensive is nice, but free is nicer!
