Double birth entries

Surnames: Cooke, Piombini
Trying to get my head around some double register entries for some of my ancestors.

My grandfather Cedric D Cooke son of Alfred Cooke and Gina Piombini has two entries in the birth indexes. One with the surname Cooke and the other with Piombini.

eg

Name: Cedric D Cooke
Mother's Maiden Surname: Piombini
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1918
Registration District: Paddington
Inferred County: London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 51

and

Name: Cedric D Piombini
Mother's Maiden Surname: Piombini
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1918
Registration District: Paddington
Inferred County: London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 51

Now we now know his parents were not married until 1931 which is of course much later.

e.g

Name: Gina R L Piombini
Spouse Surname: Cooke
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1931
Registration District: Barnstaple
Inferred County: Devonshire
Volume Number: 5b
Page Number: 1103

But is this double entry normal? Could someone be registered at the same time with two different surnames?

At least 3 more of his siblings show the same double entry.
