Intention to Marry vs. A Purpose of Marriage

I was looking through the original town records for Charlton, Massachusetts and became confused by the language used. My ancestors were listed as follows: "A purpose of marriage between Thomas Wiseman and Abigail McIntire - March 30, 1783" I have other sources that list their marriage as December 11, 1783. Is the source in question their "marriage intention"? I found a few pages before my ancestors in the record book where the registrar used "Intentions of marriage between BLANK BLANKERSON and BLANKETTE BLANKS" followed by another record reading "A Purpose of marriage between BLAH BLAH and BLAH BLAH." Are these terms "Intention" and "Purpose" interchangeable as far as the genealogical record is concerned? Are both technically "Intentions of Marriage"? I have included both a snapshot of my ancestors record and of the switch between "intention" and "purpose." Any help would be great.
