People may "dis" Facebook for lack of privacy, etc., but I've got to say that I've had some of the most profound reconnections and reunions because of it.
Take care and talk to you soon,
Rachel

Hi,
I just found this!! How exciting-My sister and I both performed with Tom Thumb players for several years as kids in Chicago. We were active from about 1968-1972. I was in "Once Upon a Mattress", "The Sound of Music", "Heidi", and "The King and I". I have wonderful memories of the other performers, both my age and older, who left a lasting impression on me to this day. We also took ballet with Miss Melba.
I remember when Mr Netsky's daughter passed away. He still came to the studio to work with us. Unbelievable stuff! Any former students, please reply.

I am a TTP alumnus from Tucson. Mr. Netzky was like a father to me; he had such a great impact on my life. He had such a great love for the craft of acting and his students. He always believed in me, said I had what it took to make it, but I never pursued it. I have always regretted not pursuing my career when the time came. Nonetheless, I will never regret the time I spent under his tutelage.

No reunion planned at this time, but stay tuned to this channel. It was a special time in all our lives - something that is not repeated today.
Thanks for writing.

Hi,

I was at Tom Thumb in in the late 60's, early seventies. I made the carousel for Carousel with the rotating lights. I vaguely remember Judy. Janet Davidson had most of the leads and then she got married. I just stumbled on this site and many of the faces are with me but not the names. It was a wonderful time in my life. If renuhion ever happens I'll attend. Marc, I remember you. I remember also making the programs. Bob

Hi....just checked this site again...wondered if you were able to get over to the ASU library and see the Tom Thumb collection...Wendy Netzky wrote to tell me that she had donated the collection to the ASU library. I also had a professor at Drake University (where I majored in Theatre Arts) who also taught at ASU in Theatre in her later years...so the connection is interesting to me. I also hope to get to ASU one day and see the collection. By any chance was 16mm (hopefully now on video or dvd) of the program WHYS AND OTHERWISE included in the collection? I was part of the TV show taped at 2323 Devon in March, 1972. Thanks for your comment on my wikpedia article...they just didn't believe it ever existed and I didn't have the time to get proof...so, poof the article was gone...once in a while i find it on other sites...
marc

Hi!
Carousel was my first play, the summer of 1971. I didn't start helping in the office and backstage until 1972. I graduated high school in 1972 and then started filling in by teaching a class now and then. In 1974 I was allowed to teach half the tiny tot, 6-8, and 9-12 classes. I was given an exact course schedule to follow every week by Mr. Netzky, who checked constantly to make sure everything was going well. Often he had a class in the theater and I was teaching in the backstage area. You're right, the only training I had to do this came directly from Mr. Netzky himself. When he was first opening Tom Thumb in Arizona, he wrote and asked me if I was willing to relocate there and help out. I decided not to at the time, since I had just gotten married. I regret I never went back to school to get any additional training so I would be able to teach childrens dramatics. It's great to hear from the other Tom Thumbers, from Chicago and Arizona!
Judy

Thank you...I wrote the article with much love and affection for Tom Thumb Players. I had just finished Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp in December of 1967 when The King and I opened with Jonathan Rest as the King. The King and I was "revived" in 1972 and was my last play as an actor at Tom Thumb..I graduated high school that year. The article was pulled from Wikipedia as there was no proof according to their editors that it ever existed. I do see it on other "encyclopedic" sites from time to time....someday I will rewrite it and add the proof. Wikipedia's rules are very hard to follow unless you have hours upon hours to spend with them. I did hear from a few people who read my conversations back and forth with the editors as my email address was listed there.

It would be wonderful to have a memory website...but how to collect pictures, etc... I have my own scrapbooks, etc. but to combine all that info would be a full time job...someday perhaps!

Judy, Carousel was the show produced during the 1971 Summer Theatre Workshop. Although, many of us knew you were working in the office assisting Mrs. Netzky, I do not personally recall you actually teaching half of the classes as you claim. What training other than that provided by Mr. Netzky would you have to do that??? I do recall the messy mimeograph...it was called Gestetner...still made today...you are right on that point.

Tom Thumb was so integral to my childhood and who I've become, I've diligently googled every so often to see what/who I could find! I loved your Wikipedia article, and was able to refer a lot of people to it when they asked how I'd started acting..and was definitely bummed when it disappeared. :( Coincidentally, I'm heading to Phoenix this weekend for a dance convention, and a few months ago, discovered online that there is a 'personal collection' in the name of Lester Netzky archived at ASU in their Child Drama Collection! I plan to pay a visit to the library and see what treasures are in store there. I'll be happy to report my findings on this board when I return!
And I think a memory website would be just wonderful. :)

Hi!
I'm also one of the Chicago Tom Thumb Players! I first joined in 1970, when I was 15. That was the year we did Carousel for summer theater. I was also on scholarship as time went on. When Tom Thumb closed in 1975, I was Mr. Netzky's "assistant", and was teaching half the classes and working in the office with Mrs. Netzky. Remember that old mimeograph machine we used to print out the scripts on! What a pain! I loved every aspect of my years spent there, though, and was devastated when it closed in 1975. When they moved to Arizona and decided to reopen, they wrote me and asked me to move out there and work with them again. I regret to this day, that I decided not to. I miss the days of painting props, running off scripts, sewing costumes, blocking scenes, and a thousand other jobs required to put on plays! I would love to read your article. I don't think anyone who wasn't involved with Tom Thumb could ever understand the bond we all shared. Tom Thumb Forever!
Judy Gabl (rings42000@yahoo.com)

Wow, can't believe I haven't come across this site before...Interesting how 2 completely different generations of Tom Thumb Players-Front Row Center Theatre Company students are all basically saying the same thing....that Tom Thumb was a very magical place to belong to during our formative years. I wrote the Wikipedia article on Tom Thumb about a year ago...it was pulled as their instructions and what I needed to prove (as if) that Tom Thumb really existed just became to much of a hassle...in any case if you would like to read my article, please contact me and i will send it you....Now for my bio:

I became a member of the Tom Thumb Players (the original, mind you) in Chicago, IL in 1967!! And remained a member until I graduated high school in 1972....I was one of those kids that had many talents that Mr. Netzky used to great advantage, and because so, I was "on scholarship" which means I worked my butt off....but that was okay then and even now...my interest in stage lighting peaked and i was happy to take that responsibility over from an older member in 1970...I learned so much and the interest grew...also, as I also played the piano, i was utilized as rehearsal pianist for 2 summer theatre workshops...I recall a Showcase production (where we did scenes from famous plays) in which despite the fact that I was in a leg cast, I played the piano for a fellow performer, then walked on stage, played the scene, walked off the stage, dimmed the lights and returned to the piano! To this day, I am a lighting and sound designer and occasional actor. I miss those heady days and all the kids I grew up with...hey we didn't always get along, but we stuck with it....I often google other kids that I grew up with at Tom Thumb...would love to put together a memory website complete with pictures, video, etc.....Oh for those golden days!

Wow! Happy to find some fellow Tom Thumb Players. I grew up studying under the tutelage of Lester Netzky in Tucson, AZ from 1979 until he retired in 1985, I believe, due to an aneurysm if my memory serves me correctly. I left Tucson with my family in 1987 and upon hearing of Mr. Netzky's death, wondered whatever happened to all the videotapes that were made of all of our yearly productions. I was lucky enough to be cast in many lead roles as a child...Annie, Oliver, Dorothy...and would pay to have a copy of that footage! I tried emailing Berenda Crellin a few years ago for possible leads, but I never heard back. I imagine the videos were either passed on to some family member or archive, or disposed of (yikes! hope not!) I went off to an Ivy League school, then corporate America, and about 2 years ago, returned to my pursuit of an acting career and am ever so grateful for the training I received at Tom Thumb. :)

Re: REUNION 2003 - REVISITED

J.R., when you begin looking at the heraldry in the name, without the east German records, it's interesting how many names are associated with Grotts. I always got the impression they came from Rheinland/Prussia area. I have seen those names you spoke of in a database. This particular Grotts story had 3 brothers who split up and went different different directions, and one was killed by indians - found him! The spelling variation of the names found: Gratts, Grots, Groats, Gratz, Grotts, and several other ways. It's taken detective work to get anywhere. Jacob, Mary, and their son William travelled down the Ohio river valley and the Kaskaskia with George Rogers Clark Long Knives. They settled near the Columbia IL airport - and a document in German there has the name Gottlieb Grotts on it - but I cannot read the document. During the 1700s the land up to the Mississippi River was Virginia - the other side, at Cahokia, IL was French. There are many of these stored locally. If you'd care to further discuss any of this, contact starrider314@yahoo.com. Your "cuz", Penny
