The principle titles of the Empire were those of Prince, Duke, Count, and Baron and they were conferred upon the grantee with remainder to his descendants of both sexes for all time (that is, including his daughter but NOT families descended from him through daughters). On the dissolution of the Empire in 1806 the powers formerly belonging to the Emperor became vested in the Sovereigns of the various principalities into which Germany was divided, although many of these were soon afterwards deprived of their territories by Napoleon. Since 1806, therefore, the titles conferred are not those of the Holy Roman Empire, but of Austria, Bavaria, Prussia et cetera…
