Re: Sulzycki
My last name is also Sulzycki... From what my father has told me, it is a Polish name, originating from the Polish words "sól życia", meaning "salt of life" (pronounced "sul zhy-cha"... the 'zh' are pronounced almost like the second "g" in "garage", and the "y" has the same pronounciation as the "i" in "dip". the full surname "Sulzycki" is pronounced "sul-zhy-tski", with the same rules applying as above). The name wasn't ever Russian... it has its origins in the city of Vilnius (currently the capital of Lithuania) and its surrounding towns and villages. In fact, that's where my grandfather was born. Once, long ago, this land belonged to Poland, and very many people of Polish origin reside there to this day. During the dark times of communism, i believe it may have been under soviet rule, like many other Eastern European countries, hence the confusion of it being a Russian name. I've also heard that it may have been a noble name, and the Sulzycki family was in fact baltic nobility, but I haven't been able to proove this. However, it's still fun to tell people that you're a count from Eastern Europe. If you throw in the words "Vilnius" or "Baltic Sea", they're usually very impressed, as they hardly ever know where either one of these is located, and this heightens the exotic ring of the name. Hope this helps you out a bit! By the way, if you find any other information regarding this topic, would you kindly send it my way? I'm interested in this stuff too... If you want more information, just ask.. my father's compiling a history of our family right now, and I'm sure that he's discovered some cool things....
Cheers!
