James' Army numbered some 27,000 and were very poorly equipped and badly disciplined. Many of the Commanders were Landed Gentry with very little appetite for the Battle.
William's troops, however, were Battle-hardened, commanded by Schomberg, a professional soldier with experience of fighting in Europe. The Dutch Guards and Danish troops had high reputations and the Inniskillings had experience of driving James back at Londonderry & Enniskillen.
