Here is some basic information about John Sholto Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry (not Queensbury) compiled from *The Complete Peerage*, Vol. X p. 706, except where noted.
John was the eldest son and heir of Archibald Douglas, 8th Marquess of Queensberry and Caroline Clayton. He was born in July 1844 and died in January 1900. He succeeded his father in August 1858.
John married twice: first, with Sybil Montgomery (1845-1935) in February 1866 (she obtained a divorce in January 1887), and second, with Ethel Weeden in November 1893. This marriage was annulled in 1894.
John was known widely and unfavorably as a supporter of Bradlaugh and secularism. (British-born Charles Bradlaugh was a republican, and founder of the National Secular Society, an organisation opposed to Christian dogma. (Source: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/PRbradlaugh.htm) John was also known as probably the finest amateur boxer of his time. In the mid-1860s, he co-wrote the "Queensberry Rules" which govern modern boxing.
In 1895, John successfully won a libel suit brought on by Oscar Wilde, the playwright. Lord Alfred Douglas, John's younger son, and Wilde had a relationship, which infuriated his father. After John referred publicly to Wilde as a 'sodomite', Wilde responded by suing him. Wilde lost his suit, and was sent to prison.
