I'm trying to locate an ancestor on my husbands side of the family. It seems she worked at Buckingham Palace during the mid to late 19th century. Information on her is very sketchy, I'm hoping your records may have her listed. Her name was Mary Ann Saul and I believe she became Mary Ann Kemp when she married.

I do hope someone can help.

Doreen

Hi to all you history buffs

On my original posting I was seeking a Dowsett at the court of king Charles, well I have found him, his name was Abraham Dowsett (sometimes spelt Doucett) the Clerke of the Kitchin at the court. I have found several mentions of him in letters to parliament, including details of how he, after being defeated by Cromwell at Naseby he was sent with Charles to Carisbrooke Castle he was also arrested with a Mr Osborne after a failed rescue attempt to free Charles. The next mention I can find is he is Bailed to attend some business at the Southampton Assizes with the King and a Major Rolfe, still trying to find out what that was.

Can anybody shed any light on what the business may have been

as you all probably know, the stuarts are desended from royalty in Scotland. I am desended from the son of James V, James Stewart. I am interested in any information anyone has about the stuart family history. I am interested to see how far back I can trace our family. Also, if anyone has information about the sons of James Stewart, I would appreciate any information. I have some names leading up to myself, but I was hoping to find some information about them. Also, I found a website that traces thr Stuarts all the back to Noah and Abraham. i don't know if is legit, but if anyone is interested, i can give you the address.

I found an on line manuscript book called THE OLD BRICK CHURCHES OF MARYLAND by Helen West Ridgely. On page 44 it mentions a Matthias Jones “Olim et de jure Glendower” It goes on to say Matthias was a turbulent descendant of Glendower and had joined in the Monmouth Rebellion which was about 1685. Matthias was forced to leave the country and take refuge in Maryland and bought part of Cross Manor, St. Mary’s, MD. More details are in the book.
I can't locate how they were related. Any help would be appreciated.

Rev. Joseph Story (1788-1838) of Bingfield, Crossdoney, Co. Cavan married Louisa Rivers, daughter of Sir Peter Rivers Bt.
According to Rev. Leach of Drumlane, Co. Cavan, the Rivers Family were directly descended from Mary Queen of Scots and also from King James. Also corroborating this data is "Ruvigny-Blood Royal" and Burke's Peerage.
Rev. Joseph & Louisa had eight children - Joseph (1817-1875), William John Rivers (1826-45), Emilia Henrietta who married Christopher Bagot Lane (1850), Eleonora Martha Sarah (d.1872), Frances Marianne (1823-1892), Louisa Maria Elizabeth (d.1916), Caroline Maria who married Rev DeCourcy Meade (1861) & Agnes Sarah who married Lt.
British Royalty

Hello, I am an American who is new at collecting ancestry data, and I have what may seem to you a silly question, but I must ask:

I have tracked my ancestry back to the UK, and found that I have a link to the monarchy. My question to you all: Is this very common for you in UK to have links to the monarchy? My guess is that in some European countries where people have lived for many generations, everyone ends up being related at one point in the past. Is this not so?

As you know, our country is very young, so it is no big deal to have relatives who were here 200 years ago. But to be linked to the British monarchy is another thing altogether. It seems to be good for bragging, at least:)

I tried to follow my tree back in time, but the records started getting corrupted, ex: someone born in 900 AD in Ottawa, Canada???

Thanks for any help with this.

Am I really the 20th grandson of King Robert I of Scotland?

I recently used ancestry.com to discover that I am the 20th grandson of King Robert I of Scotland, or at least the records on this site say I am. What I don't understand is why in the mid-1400s my family's surname changes from Stewart (the royal family of Scotland) to Cash (my grandparents' surname.) The records say the father of Thomas Cash was James Stewart, meaning Thomas's surname should remain Stewart because it was his father's surname. Did ancestry.com supply me with false information or am I missing something?

Lord Phillips of Ireland / maybe sent from England to Ireland pre 1750 / American descendants

I am looking for information about a Lord Phillips of Ireland. My husband, Ernest Churchill Phillips is a direct descendant of Lord Phillips. However, we just found out this recently from an official state history book here in the United States.

Supposedly a son of Lord Phillips immigrated probably some time between 1740 to perhaps almost 1800 to New England in the United States. His children were Levi, William H. and Frances. William H. was born in 1801 in Hanover, NH.

We know nothing about Lord Phillips and an internet search has yielded virtually nothing except a "present" Lord Phillips (Sudbury??) of England. Don't know if there's any relationship or not.

If any one knows, or has suggestions, it would be most appreciated.
H.M. Queen Victoria's God Children

Where would I find a list of her God Children, most specifically, a Godson that was a cabin boy in the British Navy and became a deserter (at age twelve) in New York(?). He never contacted his family again due to the disgrace of his desertion. He changed his name to Smith used the name Francis/Frank Harding Smith. Apparently this was his never mentioned dark secret and only relayed information to his daughter on his deathbed in the 1940's (when he was in his 80's?). He also said that his mother was a close friend of the Queen, a neighbor/Lady in Waiting. Unfortunately he passed before clarifying his real birth name. I am his great grand daughter (age 69). I promised my grandmother, just prior to her death, that I would work to find out her real heritage and family name. Surely, there could not have been too many of the Queen's God Children that deserted the British Navy. Where would I find this sort of information ? Any help greatly appreciated indeed.

Use Wikipedia to look up the names of royal/noble figures

Go to www.wikipedia.com to look up the names of any royal or noble figure by using its search engine.

For example, type in "Charles I" or "Charles II" or any name with Roman numeric and the search engine will give you a list of royal/noble figures based on Charles.

Pay very close attention whose parents or relations each royal or noble figure is related to. It's very easy to get lost or confused with the names, so pay very close attention to these figures' names.

I've been putting a lot of Wikipedia URLs in the comment parts of every royal/noble figure in my GEDCOM under Ancestry.com so for current and future members to look up the comment section and copy-paste the URL link to a webpage to take them to see who's who on Wikipedia's royal/noble figures.

Nurse Walkley

Nurse to Q Victoria's children towards the end of the 19C.
In the loft of a house he'd moved into, a colleague found a batch of elegant greetings cards and letters.
The letters with drawings were truly startling as they were from the roysl children addressed to 'Dear Walkley'.

Letter-heads included Balmoral, Sandringham etc.

I was told that efforts to trace the former house owner failed and that the packet would be sent to the Royal Archivrs at Windsor.

Surprisingly, Walkley figured in an item in the UK newspaper (with a photo), The Daily Telegraph, perhaps 20 years ago. From memory, she had been dismissed for some misdemeanour, but Queen Mary(?) had her re-employed.

I'd like to know more about Walkley. Does anybody have any information?
TKS

Van Cutsem/Jackson - Linking Linley lineage?

Hello everyone,

I'm seeking information on Lt.-Col. Freeman Astley JACKSON, D.S.O. (1874-1951) who married Florence Josephine Alexandra VAN CUTSEM (1883-????), 3 February
1910, London.

The pedigree of Serena Alleyne STANHOPE (who married Viscount Linley) shows him to be her great grandfather, but I can find no mention anywhere of her great grandmother. I know Lt.-Col. Jackson married Florence van Cutsem and had "one son and one daughter" by her. Can anyone confirm (or otherwise) that Capt. Harry FREEMAN JACKSON, Serena's grandfather, is the "one son" of Lt.-Col. Jackson and Florence? Or did the Lt.-Col. have more than one wife? If so, was Capt. Harry the son of Florence or not? And can anyone put a name to the "one daughter"?

Confirmed lineage...

Capt. Harry FREEMAN JACKSON (son of Lt.-Col. Freeman Astley JACKSON, D.S.O.)
b. 19??
married: Dorothy Alleyne D'Aubigny D'ENGELBRONNER (1915-1992), 1936.
d. 1993
Residence - Cool-na-Grena, Mallow, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Child:-
Virginia Alleyne FREEMAN JACKSON. b.1939.
married: Charles Henry STANHOPE, Viscount PETERSHAM (b.1945), 1966.

Children:-
(1) Hon. William STANHOPE (b. 14 October 1967).

(2) Hon. Serena Alleyne STANHOPE (b. 1 March 1970, Limerick, Ireland)
married: David Albert Charles ARMSTRONG-JONES, Viscount LINLEY (son of Antony Charles Robert ARMSTRONG-JONES, 1st Earl of SNOWDON, Viscount
LINLEY, and HRH Margaret Rose WINDSOR, Princess Margaret of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; b. 3 November 1961, Clarence House, Mayfair, London), 9 October 1993,
Westminster.

Children:-
(1) Hon. Charles Patrick Inigo ARMSTRONG-JONES (b. 1 July 1999, London).
12th in line to the British throne.

(2) Hon.
royal descent

My sons are descended from Alfred the Great through their father. Alfred's descendants are mostly kings of England until Edward III.
One of their ancestors, Henry II, married Eleanor of Aquitaine. Their blood line can be traced directly from Alfred to them, each succeeding descendant being either the son or the daughter of the previous link in the chain. Is this unique? Does anyone know the scientific formula for establishing the number of genes they have in common with, say, Eleanor of Aquitaine?

Best wishes from

Julianna

United Kingdom citizens who may have inherited royal blood lines

This writer in Canada has been researching his family linage and has found a blood line from one ancestor, Such blood line has decended to a few royals past and present in the United Kingdom and three branches of the German Royal lines as well in the last Czars direct blood line.

Those who inherit the same blood line and markings are from one ancestor, do not have to have direct lines to royal lineage, but do share the same ancestor (from small gene pool).

The rare visible markings appear on some royals who are related past and present.

My interest is to see if anyone in the United Kingdom who believes their ancestors had English Scottish or Welsh royal blood line, may have inherieted mentioned markings. One person of Scottish ancestry who was an Earl did inherit the royal blood line markings spoken about.

In conclusion this writer is trying to determine if the rare royal blood line decended down through Untited Kingdom Royals over centuries or did they originate from European royal lines many centuries past.

Mr. W.

Through my father's side, I'm descended from Robert Bruce's sister Matilda and her husband Hugh de Ross (and henceforth from Aethelred, the Ogilvies, Sinclairs, Restalrig, and de Hyburnes)... I already have the line mapped out, so this isn't necessarily a lineage question. My question is does anyone know of and can recommend some good books on the history of the Bruces?

Thanks!
Stacey

Edward I King of England

I'm looking for the titles of some books or articles giving genealogical information on the descendents of King Edward I or England. From a reliable source I read that Ann Cocke who married Robert Bolling in Virginia in the 1700's brought many royal lines to the family. I discovered a posting on FHL that traces this family back to King Edward I. I have been unable to contact the poster for verification and would like to find a way to verify it myself. Any suggestions would be welcome.
"Carol Mathews" Court of Henrietta Maria

Hi Carol

This is a long shot, I noticed your response regarding the Ladies in Waiting to Henrietta Maria in 2000 and your obvious interest in this subject. I to have an ancestor believed to be in the court of Henrietta Maria he was apparently the Head of the Household and his surname was Doucett (French variation on the anglicised version of my Grandfathers surname of Dowsett. Because of your interest have you come across the name? any detail at all would be appreciated. This day 20/06/06 I have posted a letter to the Royal Archive in the hope they may shed some light on the subject.

Thanking you in anticipation

Tom Hutchinson

WILLIAM IV (Prince William Henry, the Sailor King.

In compiling a family tree on my GREENE family of Point Verde,Placentia,Newfoundland, I have a few times come across family folklore that says the following:::
When Prince William Henry(later King William IV) was stationed at Placentia,Newfoundland for a couple of months in 1786,as a young man, working partly as a surrogate magistrate, and being already known for his liking of the opposite sex,and willingness to mix with the normal middle class instead of the nobility only....he apparently was seeing an unmarried GREENE girl at some stage, and,on returning to England, left her "with child". The folklore goes that a few years later, either he returned for or sent for the child, but not the mother, and took the child back to England, and that's the last heard of the child by the Greenes. It sounds plausible because of his willingness to mix with the middle class, and the Greenes were a prominent local family, and young single girls were still a rarity in the area at that time. Just a shot in the dark, but an interesting tidbit if true.....so if any researcher has any knowlledge of this child,I'd be very interested in knowing what happened to it. (This Newfoundland family used both GREENE and GREEN from arrival in Boston and New England in 1610,Nfld. in 1600s,French Nfld. in late 1600s,and Boston and Nfld. in 1770s,and up until 1930 or so,when Placentia-Poinr Verde main family settled on Greene. There are GREEN,Protestant relatives elsewhere in Nfld. from old days. Family originally English Quakers, then mainly RC in Placentia, being married to French and Irish RC).Thanks.Ward. wardgreene@hotmail.com

Hi, This is a real long shot. There is a rumour which I am trying to confirm that the Head of the royal household during the reign of Charles 1 and/or Oliver Cromwell was a descendant of mine named Dowsett/Dousett or more likely Doucett as he was believed to have been of French descent. Could anybody supply any information or reference material which is available where this could be checked?

Thanks in advance

Tom

I recently ran across a turn-of-the century news article that describes a deed granted by George III in 1700 to one of my ancestors (Cornelius Thompson) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, US. Of course, the deed itself is now long gone. Does anyone know of any sources for royal deeds of that period where I might find a copy today?

Howland ancestry of the Russells

Can anyone provide information on the Howland ancestry of Elizabeth Howland, heiress of Streatham and wife of Wriothesley Russell, 2 Duke of Bedford? Her parents are given in CP as John Howland, of Streatham, and Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Josiah Child, 1 Baronet. The IGI (not a particularly reliable source) identifies John’s father as Geoffrey Howland. A2A shows a collection of Howland documents preserved by the Duke of Bedford, which curiously seem to pertain to two distinct (but probably related) Howland families.

When Queen Victoria’s second son Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh visited Australia in 1867 he carried a Letter of Introduction to German immigrants Louis Dettmann and his wife Agnes (nee Kroll). Originally from Berlin, the Dettmanns had arrived in Sydney in 1849 and Louis became a naturalised British citizen in 1860. The Letter of Introduction had been written by William I, King of Prussia (later Emperor of Germany), whose son Frederick was married to Alfred’s sister Victoria.

I would be interested to know whether Queen Victoria mentions the names Dettmann or Kroll in any of her diaries or letters in the period shortly before 1867. As it is extremely difficult to research such things from Australia, I wondered whether anyone on the list has access to these documents and would be prepared to do a lookup for me.

Belinda in Sydney
I am wondering how can I research if a relative worked for a former Queen of England as a stable boy? Are there government lists of employees for Her Majesty? Particularly looking for Alfred Middleton in the 1800's.

Saxe-Gotha Arms

Wondering if anyone is up on their Hanoverian and Saxon heraldry.

I was looking at one of the Royal Palm Prints, from the early 18th century. The one that is labeled "To Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales" has what looks like a Saxe-Gotha crest on it. Since the corresponding print for the Prince of Wales is to Frederick (son of George II, who died before succession), and he was married to Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, then the crest would make sense.

However, on the Palm print, the crest is shown with lions rampant in the 1st, 6th and 11th, which are facing sinister. That seemed very odd to me, and I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a correct blazon, or if it was artist taking license.

Query-is there a Banbury link to British peerage? Just curious, realizing that not everyone in the British Isles is of noble origin.
any ifo appreciated.

Is this true?

I have found a story about very early royalty in the british isles and wondered if it is true.

the story says that a king named Arviragus on the british isles around 50AD, and that he caused so much trouble for the romans that Claudius I, emperor of rome, sent his daughter to marry Arviragus to bring peace. Claudius' daughter was named either Genuissa, Guinessa, or Genissa...which was the origin of the name Vanessa.

Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote a story of this happening, but his stories are known to contain some myths with some facts. there is also mention of an Arviragus in writings from rome in Juvenal 4.127, but this makes no mention of him being a king or that the daughter of Claudius was sent to marry him.

Supposedly, this same Arviragus gave Joseph of Arimathea land at glastonbury to build the first monastery in britain.

Gentleman Usher of the Scarlet Rod, Order of the Bath: I found the name!

Hello Everyone,

It's Midterm Week in Library School and I have 5 large assignments due this coming week. Plus, I'm looking for a job! Yikes!

Wanted to let you know that I found the answer to the question: "Who is the Gentleman Usher of the Scarlet Rod, Order of the Bath."

It's Rear-Adm. I.R. Henderson, CB, CBE

I found it listed in a book called Whitaker's Almanack (p. 78), which by the way, is an excellent source for information about British heraldry. It gives the names of the principal players within various Orders and other divisions.

It's published in London by A&C Black. I found it in the 2004 edition. It was listed in the index under "Orders of Chivalry." I don't know anything about heraldry, but started reading and I think I noticed mention of Order of the Bath as being one of the Orders of Chivalry. That's how I thought to look under that.

Anyway, thanks for your many e-mails. I was unable to find the information online. I guess that's what they're trying to train us to do in library school, anyway, know what printed resources to.

One more question: I am posting this message by replying to a reply to my message. I try to access the Digests, but my new internet provider (ComCast) has some sort of screen and won't let me see the posts because they might be "dangerous." Can't remember the exact error message. Has anyone had problems accessing the list?

I plan to contact Comcast when I have time (not for awhile).

Take care.

Susan Snowdon
Chicago, IL USA

Hi,

I read with interest "The Frustrated Student"'s message wanting to know the members of the royal family.

Now I have a similar "stumper." Who is the Gentleman Usher of the Scarlet Rod, Order of the Bath?

I looked all over the Internet and only found info re: Order of the Bath. Couldn't find anything on "Gentleman Usher" or "Scarlet Rod." In Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor, there's mention of an Usher of the Black Rod.

Does anyone know where I can look -- either on the Internet or in a book?

Thanks very much.

I recently visited the Tower of London, where I was fascinated by a historical timeline on a wall. One panel was about a prince who died young, at about 18 years or so. There was a painting of him, and the death may have been from a horse accident. He had a younger brother, who was sickly, and yet grew up to take the throne, if I remember correctly. Does this sound familiar to anybody?

Can anyone tell me where I might find out more about an apparent assination attempt on George III abt 1775, A ancestor of mine one Thomas BONSALL a lead miner of Wales apparently foiled the attempt and was knighted in 1796 by George third. That's all the details I have. I'd love to know how he managed it.

HADSON /HUDSON / PERRY

am researching the name Hadson. The first sign in Australia was the marriage of my gtgt grandfather in Australia in 1874. He states that he was born here, but I have been unable to prove this.
A family story was that our forebears were from Scotish Royalty and the man in question had a liason with a woman from the circus. His parents told him to go to Australia if he wanted to continue the liason and they would provide for him. If he stayed in Scotland he would be disowned.
Now, I am not sure how acurate this story is, but they claim that he was told to change his name slightly eg one letter.
I would be very happy for any help you can give me.
Kaye Vernon nee HADSON
BOOTH-LaZOUCHE Connection?

I am descended from Richard BOOTH (1606-1687) and Elizabeth HAWLEY of Connecticut. There is information "out there" that the BOOTH line is a royal line through DUTTON, SWYNNERTON & LaZOUCHE families. Is this correct or another internet myth? Any specific information would be appreciated.

I am looking for a copy of this encyclopedia. It has been used as a reference by several genealogists (now deceased) who studied the Canfield side of my family tree. Usually the reference has been called "English Encyclopedia", but I found one reference to it as "The British Encyclopedia of Noble Names...". If anyone has heard of it or knows where I can get a copy, please share.

Thanks,
Marjorie :)

I am searching for Sir Abbott Houston. According to an obituary I have for my great-grandfather, Martin James Kennedy, he was the great-grandson of “Sir Abbott Houston of England.” Martin James Kennedy was born circa 1833 in Ireland to Anthony Kennedy (son of Major Peter Kennedy) and Mary Houston (granddaughter of Sir Abbott Houston). Mary Houston was born in Ireland.

Any advice re: how to trace Sir Abbott Houston? I am not familiar with tracing English/Irish nobility.

Also, if this family sounds familiar I would be pleased to exchange inforrmation with you.

I believe my gggrandmother, Agnes Caroline Owen Warne, b. 11/18/1821 in England was a lady in waiting to Queen Victoria. The story handed down was she fell in love with a commoner and married (my gggrandfather, John James Elvey, b. 3/9/1819) on 5/20/1849. I have not been able to verify this or locate any information on her (ie: parents, place of birth, etc.). I would like information on where to find records of court members and ladies in waiting to Queen Victoria. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Paula J. Beckner.
Ladies in Waiting

You imply that Agnes Caroline Owen Warne was of a higher social standing than her husband, although she too would have been a commoner - as is everyone who isn't royalty. Have you tried Burke'e Peerage for possible Warnes? Also, can you get her mariage certificate from the Family Records Centre, which would give her father's name? Her wedding may have been reported/announced in The Times, and the court pages of that paper may have given names of ladies in waiting who attended the Queen at functions.
